'The Best' September 10, 2003 29 out of 30 found this review helpful
This is quite simply, the best thing I have ever seen, overriding any other multi million pound movie or award winning TV Series. Performances from Nicole Kidman, Denholm Elliott and Hugo Weaving are outstanding. The story is gripping from beginning to end. The realities of drug-smuggling and the horrors of death row are shown in such a dramatic and intense way that they impact on your mind for ever. The underlying theme of 'the truth is sacred', is touching, precious, and worthy of mention. The excitement of the final episode, after such a clever and dramatic build-up of circumstances, is enough to keep your heart pounding to the end. But certainly not to be missed, is the dramatic irony of the relationship between father and daughter, that culminates in a crescendo at the end, and which brings me to floods of tears every time. Absolutely first-class.
The most memorable drama ever May 4, 2002 29 out of 31 found this review helpful
I saw this on TV many years ago - and am still yet to have such an impression stapped on my memory since - from any series or film. The performance of a young Kidman provides the concluding evidence of why she is the "hollywood queen" of the current day. This DVD is full of suspense, excitement sorrow and will compel you to take care of your luggage when on far away destinations! I did go to Bangkok a few years after seeing this on TV and did not let go of my bag for a moment. This will put you off prisons for life.... brYou really must see this little known drama - as it will undermine all the multi-million movies you will see again. Highly recommend it - I've been searching for this DVD for years!

An excellent series.Great peformances from Elliot,Kidman and Weaving.the story is grippingand the last episode very exciting. The three main characters have a great chemistry including the friendship between Richard Carlisle and Hal Stanton.Depiction of life in a Thai jail is gritty and a great supporting performance from Joy Smithers.
Fantastic October 11, 2001 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
This movie is an amazing tale of an Australian women accused of trafficing drugs that were placed in her luggage by a man she just met. Her stay in Bangkok Hilton is one of great courage and fight not to let the horrors of the place kill her spirit. An amazing performance by a great Australian actor, Nicole Kidman and a great story. I highly recommend all to see.
Pulls at the heartstrings April 24, 2006 Mr. Alexi Cawson (London) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Yes, the soundtrack is pretty appalling (but annoyingly memorable) and the plot has quite a few holes (who would use a big silver flight case to transport one camera and a spare lens?) but it's a crackingly good story. The three main characters are all excellent actors, so it's a shame that the DVD is such poor quality. The credits at beginning and end of each episode list everybody featured in the entire series of 6 (odd), there are no subtitles for the bits of dialogue in Thai, and forget about anything extra! Also there are a few obviously Australian actors playing English people, but only minor characters. Overall it's still pretty powerful stuff. I don't think the plot is a carbon copy of Midnight Express at all, after all in Bangkok Hilton the girl is innocent and set up.
