Amazon.co.uk Review This modern-day teen update of ILes Liaisons Dangereuses/I suffered at the hands of both critics and moviegoers thanks to its sumptuous ad campaign, which hyped the film as an arch, highly sexual, faux-serious drama (not unlike the successful, Oscar-nominated IDangerous Liaisons/I). In fact, ICruel Intentions/I plays like high comedy for its first two-thirds, as its two evil heroes, rich stepsiblings Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), blithely ruin lives and reputations with hearts as black as coal. PKathryn wants revenge on a boyfriend who dumped her, so she befriends his new intended, the gawky Cecile (Selma Blair), and gets Sebastian to deflower the innocent virgin. The meat of the game, though, lies in Sebastian's seduction of good girl Annette (a down-to-earth Reese Witherspoon), who has written a nationally published essay entitled "Why I Choose to Wait." If he fails, Kathryn gets his precious vintage convertible; if he wins, he gets Kathryn--in the sack. PWhen the movie sticks to the merry ruination of Kathryn and Sebastian's pawns, it's highly enjoyable: Gellar in particular is a two-faced manipulator extraordinaire, and Phillippe, usually a black hole, manages some fun as a hipster Eurotrash stud. Most pleasantly surprising of all is Witherspoon, who puts a remarkably self-assured spin on a character usually considered vulnerable and tortured (see Michelle Pfeiffer in IDangerous Liaisons/I). Unfortunately, writer-director Roger Kumble undermines everything he's built up with a false ending that's true to neither the reconceived characters nor the original story--revenge is a dish best served cold, not cooked up with unnecessary plot twists. --IMark Englehart, Amazon.com/I

SIDE-SPLITTINGLY HILARIOUS, WITH EVIL CHARACTERS January 1, 2001 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have not seen/read Dangerous Liasons, which this brilliant comedy is based on but who cares if this film is nothing like it, it makes an excellent film on it's own. Right from the beginning I was enjoying it, laughing more than I have ever laughed before, marvelling at the cruelness of the characters. In some parts of the film I was not sure whether I was meant to be shocked by the evil Sarah Michelle Gellar Ryan Phillipe's deeds or whether to laugh outloud. The plot is that two College kids who are step-brother and sister are apparently goodie-goodies but are mean, double-crossing, cruel, spoilt brats who do anything to get representable images to teachers and other kids alike. The story tells of their wager on whether or not the brother can bed the new headmaster's daughter before he gets to the school. If he does, then he gets his hot sister for a night and if not, she gets his car. Dasterdly tricks and sick jokes ensue but this combination makes a very funny film. It is hilarious, get it now!
five words;Ryan Phillippe and Josh Jackson! May 4, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Cruel intentions is a sassy mixture of classy romanticism and pure evil. Ryan Phillippe once again proves what a fantastic actor he is by making us love and hate him at the same time. Plus we get to see him naked! Sarah Michelle Gellar paints a completely different picture from her previous 'Buffy' escapades by being bad. and I mean bad. I loved this film, and if you're looking for an unconventional movie with an excellent cast and a script that will make you role in the aisles (or maybe your front room)-buy this video!
Can I stress how much I love this movie? June 19, 2000 Claire Hennessy (Dublin, Ireland) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love this movie. It gets 11/10. It is brilliant! Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson among others, it is the tale of two rich Manhattan stepsiblings who are manipulative and selfish. Sebastian, played by Ryan Phillipe, has had many, many girls, but when he reads about Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon) in a magazine and how she is proud of being a virgin, he is interested. When he finds she is the headmaster's daughter, he begins to try and get her into bed, to win a bet with stepsister Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar, and if you have seen her only in the role of Buffy you will be shocked). If he loses, she gets his car. And if he wins? He gets Kathryn - something he has wanted ever since their parents married. This film is brilliant!
cruel intentions June 20, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This film is without a shadow of a doubt a classic, one of the best i have ever seen, when first purchased i saw it about 5 times running, ryan phillipe is the main star and from the very begining sets the standard of this film, he plays sebastian who makes a bet he can sleep with his headmasters daughter with his stepsister kathrynn played by an equally impressive sarah michelle geller. the character that the bet is made about, is played by resse witherspoon[married to phillipe].it culminates on a tragic note but then the ending will make you happy , as the one you route for as the film goes on is sebaastian, there are also some comedy moments in here but i wont spoil that, i seriously suggest if you havnt got this on dvd or video to get it, to make it even better the music in the film is great
Cruel, Ruthless and Cunning March 8, 2004 Emma #34;Robot#34; T (Chester, England) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I had been wanting to watch this film for quite some time and when I finally got round to, I was very impressed. It isn't like any other 'teen movie' (10 Things I Hate About You etc). The plot is very interesting. It is a story of two stepsiblings who take great pleasure in making other people's lives a living hell; only this time it backfires. Sebastian's (played by Ryan Phillippe) 'conquest' is to sleep with Annette (played by Reece Witherspoon), and is a bet with his coke addict sister Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar). If he wins the bet, he gets his ultimate prize: to sleep with Kathryn...but if he loses, then he has to give his vintage Jag to Kathryn. The bet doesn't go to plan as Sebastian begins to fall in love with the headmasters virgin daughter Annette. brEach of the stars play their charcter well, but I have to say that Ryan Phillippe to me, shines the most in this film. His character is a dream character to play in any film; dry, sarcastic, manipulative, cunning and most of all...ruthless. I have to admit that I haven't really seen any of his other films, but he really is amazing and believable as Sebastian. Sarah Michelle Gellar is great at playing the evil Kathryn; she has to be the all-time bitch of all teen flicks. Reece Witherspoon is also good, although I have to say that Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe steal the show...more so Ryan than Sarah.brThe extras on the DVD are good too. It includes deleted scenes (which in my opinion should have been added), Trailers, behind-the-scenes featurette and more. I think that this film is great value for it's money; it's incredibly sexy, wicked, funny, evil, smart and cruel...what more could you ask for?
