Amazon.co.uk Review Tyrin Turner may not have broken out into stardom as was initially expected, but his work in IMenace II Society/I is one of the more powerful cinematic debuts. The film, from the brother writer-director team of Allen and Albert Hughes, chronicles life in the Los Angeles 'hood. Similar territory was covered in the equally commanding IBoyz N the Hood/I, but what makes this cautionary tale stand out is not only the Hughes brothers' forceful story, (written with their friend, Tyger Williams) and direction, but the naturalness of then-newcomer leads Turner as Caine, Larenz Tate as O-Dog, and Jada Pinkett as Ronnie. They are so credible--occasionally frighteningly so--that the repressive universe of violent ghetto life is captured effectively. Life as portrayed here-and no doubt accurately so--is both figuratively and literally narrow. As a very young boy, Caine witnesses his dad murdered over something inconsequential, and his mom OD. His is a world where respect comes from intimidation, power from violence. Despite his understanding of right and wrong (values passed on by a good friend, his kind grandparents, a caring teacher), his life and its entrapments are too much to overcome. I--N.F. Mendoza/I

Fantastic March 22, 2005 Kim Lockhart (Fife, Scotland) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I thought this film was brilliant. I had seen Boyz in the Hood and was a bit disappointed with it, someone recommended this one and it was great. The characters are all so real, and it's surprisingly realistic. You see the main character Cain struggling over what's right and wrong, and the ending really makes you think that life doesn't always turn out okay in the end. I would definitely recommend this.
Top Class! May 26, 2003 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This film is an unmissable story of the life of two lads in South Central LA, creating a vivid dipiction of what I, having never been there, would imagine life in the ghetto to be like. I throughly enjoyed this film which kept me enthralled throughout. The story centres around the lives of two african american boys, Caine and O-Dog, who have grown up fast in a world where they had to look out for each other, and where guns, crack dealing and violence were a way of life. The story concentrates on the life of Caine who is drawn in to a world of drugs and murder from an early age and is influenced later by his friend O-Dog, who has no fears about the life he leads. This film was magnificent and in my opinion is one of the all time classics. Great Stuff!
A fantastic depiction of life in the ghetto September 20, 2001 Kyle Reading 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
'Menace 2 Society' A fantastic depiction of life in the ghetto, The story is set in south central LA. Where the 2 main characters Cane and O'Dog, live a hard life where drugs, crime and murders are an everyday occurance and gang warfare rules the street. from start to finish you will be schooled on how life in the projects can be. Cane(Tyrin Turner) is the films central character who narrates throughout. The film shows Cane trying to get out of the brutal enviroment he lives in, and therefore shows how hard it is to escape. The soundtrack is well worth buying too, although it has a real LA gangsta rap feel and features one of the films actors Mc Eiht, aswell as oakland born too short, and the blood affiliated DJ Quick. all in all the movie is a must and if you havn't seen it where have you been?.
A must see movie and one of my favourites! August 22, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This video is about a gang of black teenagers in the ghetto where they have been brought up in drugs, murders and other crimes. There are 2 main characters Caine and O'dog who at the start rob a corner store where you see O'dog kill his first person, murder scenes go on throughout the film as you get sort of a life story on Caine. It is a must see movie and certainly one of my all time favourite movies.
