Amazon.co.uk Review Anaïs Nin (Maria de Medeiros) is a young woman in 1930s Paris whose husband is slowly defecting from art to working in a bank, leaving her very bored. When the then-unpublished Brooklyn writer Henry Miller (Fred Ward) enters her life, she embarks on a journey of seduction and sexual exploration that eventually leads from the writer to his wife, June (Uma Thurman), who finances her husband's life in Paris so he may praise her beauty in his writing. Unhappy with her husband's writing and her lovers' affair, June enters a jealous rage, forcing Henry into suffering-artist mode and Nin back to her husband. Despite having one of the more erotic scenes of the 1990s, between Nin and June, the film does not live up to its subject, largely due to a mediocre screenplay and flawed direction. The strength of the original material and Medeiros' strong performance make it worth viewing. -- IJames McGrath, Amazon.com/I

| Customer Reviews: Excellent April 19, 2000 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I have read many of Henry Miller books and loved most of them. For this reason I was a bit sceptic about the movie. But if you love Miller, and even if you don't you must check this video !its very strong, sensual and emotional. Its the story of Henry Miller in Paris falling in love with 'fellow' writer Anais Nin, who also falls in love with Miller's wife...Its a story of how important it is for human beings to free their own sexuality but also a story of how it is possible to love two people at the same time, wether you believe this or not. Uma Thurman is excellent in the part of Millers wife. The movie is worth every penny you pay for it. ENJOY !
5 stars for Maria de Medeiros April 10, 2007 D. Maceoin (UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I give this five stars for only one thing: the incomparable Maria de Medeiros. Not only is her performance remarkable, given the circumstances, but she is the most beautiful ever to appear on screen, and it is worth watching the film just to bask in that. For the rest, the acting is wooden (Richard E. Grant gives the worst performance of his life) and the script is appalling. The director should have been taken away, never to be seen again. The only real eroticism in the film is in Maria de Medeiros's face, above all in those huge, soulful eyes that would melt any man's heart in seconds. The only reason she isn't a major Hollywood star is that she chose to be a European (mainly French) performer. Good for her.
Guys steer clear May 8, 2007 Douglas Lee (London, UK) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a movie for girls - guys steer clear, unless you want to fast-forward to the lesbian scenes, which are very nice, and which are the only reason to give the film two stars instead of one. Otherwise leave it to the girls!
Erotic Masterpiece? Do me a favour! December 30, 2003 10 out of 18 found this review helpful
I bought 'Henry June' upon the recommendation of my girlfriend, who - having watched the film years previously - assured me that it was an 'erotic masterpiece'. Admittedly, the film does contain a lot of sex and naked flesh, but is about as erotic as tea with your gran. It is a badly acted, poorly ploted waste of life, populated with poorly formed, morally reprehensible characters afflicted with some of the worst dialogue this side of a Jerry Bruickhaimmer film... Sexually explicit? Yes. Erotic? No. Interesting? Not so much as a scone and a cup of Earl Grey with granny - and at least she won't make you put up with Fred Ward grunting... hopefully! Avoid!
Henry June Anais Bugs Bunny June 17, 2009 David Spanswick (Brighton United Kingdom) A profoundly silly film about profoundly silly people.
br /This is little more than a cartoon posing as an art house flick
br /such a self indulgent project it is laughable, there is no aspect of the film that deserves any respect and everybody involved in it should be thoroughly ashamed. I would imagine that most of the actors have hidden their copies way down deep in their CVs.
br /The writing is less than poor. The acting is just too wooden to believe and the whole thing is about as erotic, no much les erotic than tea with the vicar.
br /avoid at all costs unless you want a good laugh.
br /you will learn nothing of the writing skills of either Miller or Nin here, stick to the text. there you will find why these two people are as famous as they are.
br /this is an intellectual nightmare and deserves minus stars if anything
br /i didnt believe a single word of it
