Losing Humanity March 3, 2003 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is one of those films that is a sorely missed classic. Far superior to other war titles in recent years like Saving Private Ryan, this film puts its focus on one man who loses his humanity in an act of violence. From this, ironically, he turns to violence and goes on a journey of self-discovery that needs to be seen to be believed. It is powerful and full of strong performances. The war in Yugoslavia is as pointless as any war with the true villains existing within all of the three sides involved. Remarkable, a must-have for your collection.
Superb! January 3, 2001 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is one of the most moving films I have ever seen! It shows the rebuilding of one mans humanity. From the shooting in the mosque, showing no regard for human life to his protection for Vera and the Baby. The music is also superb, it is one of the parts of the movie that make you feel the emotion. The acting is very good and the story line superb. It illustrates what the soldiers in the former Yugoslavia must have gone through. All in all an excellent film well worth the watch, the best war film since Platoon.
powerful and deeply involving March 6, 2003 simon gurney 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Savior is an excellent piece of film making, and in itself a hard film to pin down in terms of genre, its certainly set during a war, but i would hesitate to call it a war film.brDennis Quaid is excellent, as indeed are all the cast, the pace and story have a definite european flavour, and there are many many scenes which impose themselves on the memory, the massacre is intense and shocking, but there are many such scenes with more subtle content, the locations are perfect and add so much to the depth of the story.
the most moving, gripping and vivid movies of all time August 14, 2003 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
so much needs saying about this film, so to start i will give the jist of the story, joshua is living in paris working for the american embassy there when his wife and son are killed in a sudden bombing only moments after he leaves them to return to work, this obviously scars him deeply and he takes his vengeance in the local muslim temple, killing several innocent worshipers. he then joins the foreign legion to escape this crime and his now shattered life. phe now works as a mercenary for the serbs, heartless and cold he no longer cares for anything, when he loses his only friend he is left with next to nothing. he soon has to rescue a young woman from brutal murder while she is pregnant with the result of a tragic rape while being held prisoner, he not only saves her but delivers the child as well. this shows he still has some shred of humanity. he then sets out to try and return the two victims. failing to do so he ends up being responsible for them, and we are taken on a harrowing journey through a war torn country that is frighteningly realistic. pheart warming scenes and truly moving choices/decisions make this one of the most amazing stories i have ever seen. i love most dennis quaid films but this one truly shows what he is capable of. it is deeply moving and leaves you feeling totally amazed and upset when its over. i could not believe how wonderfully the story worked and how beautifully it was directed. truly a masterpiece
Private Ryan is in the Shade August 3, 2002 Mr. E. O'callaghan 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
You do not need to see a movie about a war almost 60 years old to experience the true horror of war. Unlike Saving Private Ryan's apocalyptic opening, Savior is a much more personal film, following, instead, one man's redemption in the most horrific of circumstances (the Yugoslavian conflict).pQuaid is on fire in his performance and was criminally overlooked by the major awards, but that is what you get with such a politically hot potato.pHorrific - certainlybrHeartbreaking - of coursepCompelling - definitelypSavior is a film ripe for discovery. It is a war film that could stand alongside Apocalypse Now, All Quiet on the Western Front, Platoon and A Midnight Clear and not look out of place.
