Amazon.co.uk Review Another masked avenger is reincarnated as a big budget movie. Idle playboy Lamont Cranston (Alec Baldwin), schooled in Tibetan mysticism, fights crime in late '30s New York while wearing a natty hat and false beak. He finds time to romance telepathic sweetie Margo Lane (Penelope Miller), whose crusty old scientist Dad (Ian McKellen) has just invented an atom bomb which is in danger of falling into the hands of Shiwan Khan (John Lone), conquest-happy last descendent of Genghis Khan.pDirector Russell Mulcahy turns out the regulation death traps (a locked chamber filling with water, a bomb timer which ticks away during the climax) and the Shadow breezes through via nifty "invisible" effects. It evokes the conventions and charms of 1930s' pulp fiction in rather more nostalgic mode than Quentin Tarantino's IPulp Fiction/I, and adds little of its own attitude, although a sly camp sensibility (notably in the extremely chi-chi Tim Curry and John Lone as the villains) goes for snickering at the expense of tension. A pleasant, eye-pleasing movie but, after the super-heroic likes of IBatman/I, IThe Crow/I and IThe Mask/I, the merely mysterious IShadow/I seems somewhat grandfatherly and remote. --IKim Newman/I

The Franchise That Should Have Been.. June 23, 2006 Treadstone (UK) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Utter God damn classic. From the rip-roaring music, to funky special effects, to the cheesy acting to the cracking idea of the whole thing itself. See it and ignore the cynical critic in you. OIt's just great to see Batman go hand in hand with Indiana Jones and actually have a film that lives up to that tag for once.
Cool is an understatement August 6, 2002 Sincere Seeker (London, UK.) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
The Shadow is the most stylish superhero movie to date, easily beating Batman, although the Spiderman movie is giving the shadow a run for it's money! This movie has that old fashioned cheesy-but-in-a-good-way vibe, set in 1920's New York City, Lamont Cranston AKA Yenkow the Butcher AKA The Shadow is brilliantly yet suttly underplayed by Alec Baldwin, he must have had a blast making this movie! Penelope Ann Miller is great as always, this was the first time i saw her, she was also great in Carlito's Way. John Lone (Ricky Tan from Rush Hour 2) is a great villan, playing the last decendent of Gengis Khan attempting to take over New York, holding the city to ransom with a stolen atomic bomb! Great DTS sound on this movie if you have the electronics to hear it!!! Check it out!!!
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of man? June 4, 2006 Mr. Gareth I. Davies (Dudley, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The Shadow knows!
br /This is a very entertaining film that, like Rocketeer, failed to spark the hoped for franchise. It's got great production design values a brilliant, slightly creepy anti-hero. Maybe it was the hammy acting that turned people away. Like Rocketeer it stands up to comparison with the 'Saturday Matinee' Indiana Jones era type films. Great fun.
I have a Shadow....but it ain't as good as this one!! February 26, 2001 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
Alec Baldwin fills in the role as The Shadow, a reformed crook/opium druglord in 1930's New York. The last direct decendant of that old war nut, wots his name, Ghangas Chan or sommin, is wanting to take over the world and only The Shadow can stop him. This is not much of an all out action movie, nor a special effects bonanza, but its still cool, the style and imagination behind the chracter is great. Infact forget the no effects comment from earlier....coz there are cool effects, that include...a nifty shadow, and a CG dagger with an evil face. The acting is a little hammy and the script o so slightly cheesey, but its fun and nice to see sommin other than an invinsible man dressed like a Bat wearing body armour. This is more like an indiana jones movie in the city with an invible man wearing a cape and cool hat, great fun, if ya like this sorta thing.
A surprisingly good film. February 12, 2008 K. A. Lay (Brightlingsea, England) I was all prepared to write The Shadow off as yet another superhero flop. After all, so many films of the genre have been a huge letdown. So I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this was an highly entertaining romp with a difference when it came on TV recently.

br /As usual, the alter ego of the hero is a man with a past, a dozen hang ups and insecurities. When the film starts, he is not at all likeable. However, a meeting with a mysterious guru sets his destiny in motion and he is pitted against a power mad descendant of Genghis Khan.

br /The film moves to 1930's New York City and the period feel is well done. The film is helped by some top names, Ian McKellern, Alec Baldwin and a manic Tim Curry are among them.

br /It all comes together nicely and works well. This is a great fun film. It doesn't take itself too seriously and as my Freeview threw a few blips to mess the signal up from time to time, I will be buying a copy of The Shadow for myself.
