Amazon.co.uk Review A lone woman, armed only with indomitable sass and her native wit, goes up against the corporate big boys and beats the bejesus out of them. As a story line it's hardly new, but Steven Soderbergh's film keeps it exhilaratingly fresh and lively--thanks not least to his lead actress. Seizing the role of the smart, mouthy, aggressively working-class Erin Brockovich with both hands, Julia Roberts gives it everything she's got and then some. She's well matched by Albert Finney as her grouchy but good-hearted boss and Aaron Eckhart as a sympathetic biker. The story's based--by all accounts fairly closely--on actual events, when the real Erin (who appears briefly in the film as a kindly waitress) brought a massive lawsuit against utilities giant Pacific Gas and Electric for spreading toxic pollution. Rather than confine the action to courtroom shenanigans, Soderbergh takes us out under Southern California's pitiless skies and along the dirt-poor roads where most of PGE's blue-collar victims live, letting us feel the ground-down exhaustion of their lives. But though it's rooted in reality, the film's anything but solemn. The script's sharp and funny, full of unexpected twists; and Roberts, flaunting herself outrageously in an eye-popping array of push-up bras and micro-miniskirts, has never been better. --IPhilip Kemp/I

A satisfying film November 30, 2004 Miland Joshi (Birmingham, UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Erin Brockovich is a tale of a woman struggling with circumstances difficult enough to make the viewer wonder how she might get out of them, and it is good to see how she manages (with the help of othet people) to deal with the obstacles and enable truth and justice to prevail as well. The fact that this is a true story about a real human, not a saint, makes it all the more satisfying. The DVD contains an interesting short featurette with the real Erin Brockovich and the lawyer she worked with.brHighly recommended.
Julia shines as Erin March 17, 2004 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is an amazing story about an amazing woman.pJulia Roberts really proves she's one of the best actresses around in this film, displaying real, pure talent - Albert Finney also puts in a memorable performance and together they totally bust PGE!pTo be honest, i wouldn't usually pick this kind of a film ... true stories tend to be over the top and sentimental ... but Erin Brockovich is gritty, realistic drama. In short, it's fantastic!
Erin Brocovich is as good as it gets! September 3, 2000 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
A movie which features a feisty single mother who takes on the big guns and exposes corruption, lies and deceit may seem like typical Channel 5 movie of the week fodder. The title alone and the based on a true story link may add weight to your expectations. But, prepare to be blown away, surprised and entertained in a way that will leave you talking about the film for days.... pJulia Roberts plays the title role. Erin is a single mother who is down on her luck. Faced with the prospect that she is unemployable and viewed purely as a stereotype as opposed to a person, she talks her way into a job in a small legal firm, following a car accident. Her new boss Ed (Albert Finney) is impressed by Erin's determination and enthusiasm to better herself although her other colleagues take her at face value and see her clothes and persona as threatening and lowering the tone of the office. Ever determined and stubborn, Erin lifts her job as an Office Clerk to great new heights- as she stumbles across chilling evidence about water contamination and sets out to fight for the community and for herself. As more horrifying details are unearthed Erin finds the balance between home and work become blurred and she pours all of her energies into fighting for a community while her estranged boyfriend George (Aaron Eckhart) holds the fort at home. This sparkling gem of a movie is everything that the similarly themed 'A Civil Action' is not. The cast is universally excellent with Roberts delivering the performance of her career. Instead of turning Erin into 'Nancy Drew' which she could have so easily done, Julie Roberts gives her the gift of realism in a fully rounded performance which manages to break your heart, make you laugh and cheer at Erin's sheer defiance of authority figures. Albert Finney provides a good foil as Ed and the chemistry between him and Roberts suggests that the two clearly had a ball making the film. Aaron Eckart's role as George is slightly underwritten but always sympathetic.pThe film belongs to Roberts. She finally delivers a performance that not only silences the critics but one which finally establishes her as an actress worth her weight in gold: 20 million dollars! pIf, after seeing American Beauty, you long to see a film that will delve into every emotion and take you somewhere that most Hollywood movies dare to venture, then buy Erin Brockovich. It will be the most worthwhile 2 hours you spend watching a DVD/video this year!
Hugely Satisfying and Encouraging July 30, 2007 J. Roberts (Maryland) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
This satisying, gleeful film contains some of Julia Roberts' finest acting to date, as she sweet-talks her way into a job working with Lawyer Ed Masry, played by Albert Finney, then unearths a catalogue of sickening corruption carried out by a water board, PGE.
br /
br /With a truly captivating amount of guts, strength, resolve and charisma, Erin Brockovitch and Ed Masry systematically unearth chemical poisoning of people's water in the small town of Hinckley, taking on plaintiff after plaintiff in what was to become the biggest lawsuit in American history. Julia Roberts positively shines, doing this inspiring role incredible justice, and the real-life feminist icon Erin even makes a brief cameo herself, as a waitress.
br /
br /Erin's relationships with the various plaintiffs, who have had their lives torn apart by greedy and corrupt businessmen, are incredibly moving and poignant, and this film is frequently emotional. It is also profoundly satisying and gleeful, since that particular big business get exactly what they deserve: made to compensate every single family who has suffered at their hands, not to mention a whole load of negative publicity. Serves them right!
br /
br /If only this kind of retribution happened more often, and more big businesses were hauled over the coals for their disgusting exploitation and corruption!
Julia Roberts deserved that oscar 101% for this role! March 24, 2002 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
Julia Roberts comes into her own in this film. No longer is she the actress with the big hair who was in Pretty Woman, but she becomes Erin Brocovich in this potrayal of her life. pThe story is a bit shakey in some places, but Julia smooths over the rough patches and carries the film. pThis film will inspire you, warm your coccles and make you realise what good people there actually are in the world - I.e Erin Brocovich herself.
