5 out of 5 stars REM at their best!   January 17, 2001

This live movie, filmed at a few different locations, came out just before Out of Time (in fact at one point in the show they run though a rough Belong). Playing at large university type halls, the band is at the peak, and sadly the end of their college popularity. A few months after this film was shot, Out of Time made the band mainsteam. If you like REM prior to the Shiny Happy People days, you will love this film. It's all concert footage with very little of that blury camera crap that REM did in previous years. I saw the band a year before this came out, and this is truly REM at their best.

5 out of 5 stars The end of REM as we knew them (and they were very fine)   November 16, 2003

Don't expect anything from OUT OF TIME or AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE (actually Belong and Through The Barricades feature briefly but aren't on the track listing).pThis is REM just before they went huge, taken from the world tour promoting the GREEN album, their first since joining a major label.pIt captures them at their very best, playing the tight guitar-based alternative rock that typifies their early work.pAfter this album they didn't tour again until the Monster LP and by that time their muse had left them and if REM still exist in 2003 they are no longer relevant, at least not to these ears, sadly.pIt is easy to see comparisons between Michael Stipe and Morrissey during this period - they certainly wore similar clothing anyway!pNothing much else to say, this is just a no-nonsense concert video from one of the best bands of the last 20 years, playing at their peak.pIf you like their music before OUT OF TIME then buy it.brIf you don't, go see a psychiatrist or an ear surgeon!pThe only negative of this DVD is that it is only in PCM stereo format - there isn't any Dolby 2.0 or 5.1 or DTS audio track.pMaybe it will get remastered and re-released at a later date, brit sounds great anyway so it's probably not necessary.pOn the plus side you can put on English subtitles to find out what Stipe is actually singing - very useful for "It's The End Of The World As We Know It"!pOne nice touch is the band playing "After Hours" by the Velvet Underground at the very end (again unlisted on the DVD).
