Awesome May 9, 2006 Martin Huxter (Crawley UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is my favourite film of all time. It's catcher in the rye for grown ups, completely dialogue driven and fuelled by drugs and alcohol! Sean Penn is in the role of his life and cannot be be touched by any actor in his generation after this perfrmance! Kevin spacey is lucky enough to play a character which is well.... Kevin Spacey! Chazz Palmenterri (Probably Spelled Wrong!) Is also amazing! Meg Ryan plays a very different role very well in this film with stand out performances by Robin Wright Penn and Anna Paquin Aswell. What's it about??? Intillectual Paralysis if your deep, too much drugs and alcohol if your not!!!!!!!!!! BUY THIS FILM!!!!!
Not a movie for everyone. January 14, 2001 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
If you want to see a movie with a very specific solid plot this is probably not for you. It may appear to be just a big collection of meaningless conversations but if you're in the right mood to sit down and really listen to the dialogue I think you will be pleasantly suprised. I have to agree with the previous reviewer, this is very much an actors movie with Penn, Spacey and Palminteri giving searing performances. The movie itself is about life, to be more specific, the lives of four men and their ups and downs, actually just their downs. None of these men are particulary likeable in any way which is why the movie is so unique. The movie does reach a conclusion in the end (not a very obvious one i'll grant you but it's there) so stick with it. If you give it a chance, you will not be disappointed.
Through all the chaos it reaches a subtle conclusion. November 13, 2000 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
In my experience: It's a roller coaster ride of crazy events. It's a mad rush of endless and seemingly senseless dialog. It's like one of those dreams where everybody is talking at once. But then:pIt's one of those movies that's made by the performances of the actors. It's also one of those movies that you don't really realize what's the point while you're watching it, but rather, it is afterwards that you realize that you've been touched by it, and that there's something there that you can relate to. This one has a very worthwhile message and meaning.
Fun yet disturbing. January 1, 2004 R Jess (Limerick, Ireland.) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was surprised I hadn't heard of this film before, considering the box-office draw of the actors involved. I then realized after putting it on that it was more of a 'vanity' picture. A literary book rather than a 'blockbuster' novel. It's taken from a play, is of course very theatrical and allows the actors involved to flex a bit more of their acting muscle than they would have been given in a conventional Hollywood movie. It's a very masculine play and is quite satirical on the nature of men's emotional inadequeces. Whether they be childish emotions (Sean Penn, Chazz Palminteri) or just plainly non-emotional (Kevin Spacey, Garry Shandling). It also makes no disguise of the characters' blatent mysoginy, exploring the darker side of the male psyche with comedic results. The fast-paced, intelligent dialogue makes it a pleasant change from the usual mid-west subject matter. pI started to feel slightly relieved when I thought that this mightn't be an exploration of men's psychological make-up, but rather a satire on Hollywood movie executives. However concern started creeping back in when I realized these could be some of the brains behind what we consume on TV and at the movies.
you forgot about the weights?!!??! January 2, 2004 Mr. M. R. Kalhoro (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
