4 out of 5 stars Not just for the knicker throwing old ladies amongst us ...   March 18, 2000
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

This was basically one big promotion for Tom's new collaberations album - Reload - but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some of his older stuff is to say the least forgetable, but there are a few gems. 'Why why why Delighla?' etc, etc ... and the others. But perhaps the highlight of the whole video is his two duets he did with Cerys Matthews. 'Baby It's Cold Outside' and 'What's new Pussy Cat?' two stonking songs that the man with the tight trousers and the lady with the voice that'll turn the legs of any grown person to jelly really make the whole thing worth while.pThe video is laced with cheesey, blatenly pre-pened questions from the 'celebrity' audience, but I suppose without them, it wouldn't be 'an audience with ...'.pI've already taped it from the telly but I'll be buying it on video anyway. Recomend for anyone, of any age, you'll find something in it that you'll like.pOne thing I will say is, Cerys you could have worn a bra!

3 out of 5 stars The Concept Of The Show Works Well, Even If The Performances Fall Well Short of Tom At His Peak.   April 19, 2009
Jervis
From one in a line of shows giving the opportunity for famous 'stars' to shine, 'An Audience With....' makes for great entertainment generally even if the star quests which make up the audience, in addition to the questions they ask, seem rather contrived. There's very much an element of smug flattery in the way the audience interact with its star, even though this element can prove one of the show's biggest strengths ultimately. Tom's answers to the various questions are very enjoyable to hear and can prove pretty revelationary at times also, which a straightforward concert setting could ill afford to provide. The revelation by Tom about Elvis singing to him in the shower is especially amusing. br / br /At the time of the show's recording Tom was in the process of releasing his duets album, 'Reload', so unsurprisingly many of his guests from that album make an appearance. Mick Hucknell, Cerys Matthews and the group Space are all in evidence - the Cerys Matthews duet 'Baby Its Cold Outside' proving particuarly effective. However, to be frank many of the other duets, in addition to Tom's solo numbers prove to be merely functional rather than inspiring, and 'Sunny Afternoon' seems especially ill suited to both Tom and Space. The term 'storm in a tea cup' very much springs to mind with regards to this performance, because their version seems so unneccesarily overblown. Tom is certainly not quite the singer of his youth at this point in time either, in fact 'The Voice' appears visually battered by the years much of the time (quite heavy). br / br /'Fun' is probably the word best used to describe this show, but it's probably best not to listen too closely for much of the time, which is especially true for those who have become acquainted with the recent DVD 'This Is Tom Jones' (late sixties/early seventies) releases which genuinely do show a youthful and vibrant Tom very much at the peak of his powers. By contrast the performances found here aren't exactly bad, but they're certainly nothing to write home about either. This DVD can prove a welcome addition to the collection, mind, if not essential.
