Amazon.co.uk Review
First shown by Channel 4 at the beginning of 2000, ITrigger Happy TV/I is one of those hidden-camera shows that plays pranks on the unsuspecting public. The brainchild of writer-performer Dom Jolly and his co-director Sam Cadman, it's a beguiling selection of endearingly daft scenes triggered by the admirably straight-faced Jolly (an inappropriate name if ever there was one). His characters include, among many others, a traffic warden who ticks off street cleaners for parking their carts on double-yellow lines; a business man who produces a three-foot-long mobile phone and bellows loudly into the handset; and an incompetent secret-service agent who sidles up to people on park benches, slipping them cryptic messages. p Unlike the elaborate ruses of other hidden-camera shows, the best gags here are decidedly low-tech and simple: Jolly's attempt to interact with a stuffed dog he's taken for a "walk" in the park, much to bemusement of passing joggers, is fairly typical of the programme's mix of deadpan humour and surreal visuals--less IBeadle's About/I, more absurdist street theatre. And instead of relying on a laugh track to set the mood, the show has a surprisingly eclectic, even at times strangely mellow and introspective, soundtrack from such acts as The Happy Mondays, Elastica and the Stereophonics. While some of the recurring gags were beginning to flag by the end of the series, the beauty of this compilation is that it features only the strongest material. However, we won't get a chance to see the prank Jolly played on Bill Wyman, who objected when it was first screened on television. Wyman might not get Jolly's impish brand of humour. But this fresh and entertaining compilation gives the rest of us a chance to sample it for ourselves. --IEdward Lawrenson/I

Trigger Happy TV was the funniest and the most wonderful TV programme during my stay in London. I couldn't imagine my life there without Dom Jolly's pranks and the innocent British played pranks on. Its stories gave me impressions of the people who were so kind that they couldn't help falling into the jokes.brHonestly, I have no idea why it hasn't been imported to my country yet. I can't deny that TV channels here haven't yet noticed that there are truly funny masterpieces in Britain. pBuying VHSs of Best of Series 1 and 2 was the only to fail because of a technical reason. But, fortunately, I could buy and watch those DVDs made in Britain. When it was successful, I was so excited. brTo all Japanese readers: Suggoku omoshiroiyo!! Osusume!! VHS ha damedakedo, DVD nara mireruyo.

This dvd is perfect in every way. Not too long so as to promote boredom, sufficient variety to tickle everyone's funny bone, fine extras.pJoly and his co-writer(s) have a wonderful appreciation of aural and visual humour and combine the two to delightful effect in side-splitting scene after scene, usually at Joe Public's expense. The soundtrack hits the spot time and again, complimenting the on screen antics to full effect. However, this is not all 'in ya face' jokery for there is undoubted subtlety too to be found in a number of sketches - the brilliant "don't go" of the lonely sailor as he is left by the 'worried' OAPs to his harbour and thoughts.pExtras include 'archive' material and 'Comedy Lab' sketches. See what Joly and comrades got up to at Paramount tv prior to joining C4. At the expense of famous politicians, it can't be bad!pA comic genius at work and a must have dvd for anyone's best of British comedy collection.

5 out of 5 stars Original, ingenius, hysterical, side-splitting and satirical   November 29, 2000

Quite frankly, WOW! This has got to be the funniest programme on TV since the original, I repeat, original Ali G show. Dom Joly has enough courage to parade around the streets of the UK making a fool out of himself while satirising how stupid us british people really are when we go shopping. My favourite sketches are the ones with Joly and a friend dressed up as animals waging war and his interviews with famous people where he does something ridiculous during the interview. Its so interesting how no-one does anything to stop him when he is wearing a burglar suit with a banner around him saying IM A THIEF!! and he pretends to steal something, everyone just stares at him and does nothing about it - RA!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Comedy Around   October 22, 2000

Trigger Happy TV is a very funny show. It is similar to the Fast Show but the sketches are played out on real (and unsuspecting) victims. The shows creator Dom Joly has loads of memorable characters including Mobile Phone Man. The sketch with the Dutch Bowling coach is my favourite from the whole series. The show should get better in the second series but unfortunately the Mobile Phone Man will be killed off. I can't wait for the release of the DVD. THTV is a masterpiece.
