4 out of 5 stars Not So Saintly   March 22, 2003

This movie is a wonderful piece of escapism, pure and simple and as such, it's a great film.pAlthough the Simon Templar we see in the film isn't the one we've come to recognise through the literature and other movies, he is still a very likeable character in his own right.pA master of disguise, thief and all round ladies man, Simon Templar takes a job to steal the formula for cold fusion from a professor so that he can retire on the money that he'll make from the job.pAll goes well until he meets the professor and finds her to be a young beautiful woman. He falls for her and decides not to steal the formula from her but the person who hired him threatens to kill her if he doesn't complete the job as planned.pSo, he takes the formula and from then on he does his best to keep one jump ahead of everyone using high tech equipment and pure good luck as well as trying to stop the cold fusion formula getting into the wrong hands.pDoes he get the girl? The ending will not disappoint.pThere are three steps to becoming a saint - he may falter along the way but eventually he takes them. Great piece of evening's entertainment after a hard at work when you just want relax.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting action-adventure!   December 16, 2002

This film was surprisingly entertaining and interesting, it had a nice story with plenty of twists and turns. Val Kilmer makes the perfect action hero as the Saint. He manages to outwit and outsmart the bad guys by adopting a variety of disguises and funny accents. Elisabeth Shue is beautifully stunning in this film, she actually adds some wit and charm into her character. The soundtrack was an absolutely amazing work of art! The Saint has all the elements that sustain the entertainment with plenty of action, suspence and romance. All in all I would recommend this movie for an evening when you have nothing to do and want to watch a movie that you'll definitely enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A thinking mans James Bond!   August 27, 2004

Picture the usual Saint format - Rich handsome man, fast car, fighting the evil criminal and always gets the girl. All that is here in Val Kilmers characterisation of the "The Saint" but this time we get to see a little deeper into the character of the man beneath the smooth veneer. The opening scenes begin with a small boy in a seemingly dark and forbidding Catholic orphanage, and you can easily discern from his treatment how he is very much a tortured a soul - nightmares of his childhood haunt him through the plot. Not so much a man brave and fearless, but driven by the pain of his past, the need to try and escape the hurt as well as stay ahead of the game. Add to this a generous sprinkling of state of the art James Bond gadetry, plus the added bonus of witnessing Val Kilmer as a master of disguise - changing both accent and appearance where the need arises and you have an extremely watchable and entertaining film. One of the things that make this a very interesting film is that despite learning a little more about The Saint's life he remains very much an enigma, maybe even to himself, where in one scene he stares long and hard into the mirror running through different accents, perhaps as though even he is asking himself who he really is at times. This constant undercurrent throughout the film is what helps to generate interest and leave the viewer wondering as to who The Saint in fact really is. brVal Kilmer has shown himself to be an extremely fine and versatile actor. I think if the producers want to have another weighty trip to the bank then a sequel to this with Val Kilmer (perhaps to develop the character of The Saint to an even greater extent) wouldnt go amiss. James Bond fans enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Taking the halo to new heights   February 13, 2001

In recent years there have been several movies based on earlier TV shows. Some have been well received, others less so. Val Kilmer's interpretation of the Saint deserves all the accolades it gets. You could take out any reference to the character and still have a top movie. Kilmer plays his role in several guises, disguises if you want, and does it all very well indeed to help create an excellent film.

4 out of 5 stars This is what movies are all about - excellent entertainment   April 10, 2000

The saint is a shining example of this genre and now one of my favourite films in my collection. The story moves with a constant pace and is full of light hearted moments which will make you grin from ear to ear. Okay, so Val Kilmer might not pull off the english role but who cares?, his performance is still perfect for the film. Loads of action, impressive gadgets, comedy, romance. If you watched mission imposible and were let down by the unrealistic action (like the chewing gum and the helicopter) then watch this film - you will be highly impressed. The musical score is also superb and will have you fully engrossed in the film. An excellent movie 9/10.
