Amazon.co.uk Review John Candy has one of his finest opportunities in this film by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) about a perpetual screw-up (Candy) who gets his act together enough to watch over his brother's kids effectively. The late actor scores big points resurrecting elements of his more decadent persona from SCTV days, but he also has some persuasively touching, sentimental moments. Hughes's direction is not as focused as it was only a few years before, but there's no mistaking his touch. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, biographies, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks. --Tom Keogh

A sensitive, often touching film that was made for John Candy's talents. May 9, 2007 Jay (Mauritius) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Candy's best performance ever. As hard as it is to pick a favorite role that John Candy ever portrayed, I'd have to say it was Uncle Buck. Although this wasn't the only title he and Culkin ever shared, it was the only film the two ever shared any time on screen together.

br /Basic plot: Candy's sister-in-law's father has just had a heart attack in the middle of the night and the two parents rush trying to find someone to watch the kids for them while they hop the next flight to go see her father. In a desperate last resort, they call the husband's brother. Buck. Of course, the concerned uncle comes to the rescue and takes the task with no complaint. However, the oldest of the children doesn't care for her bumbling uncle, and the discipline and protection he places upon her, while her parents are away.
br /Just watch the scene where Candy tries to use the kiddies toilet...absolutely hilarious.

br /A great heart-warming comedy that will make you laugh and possibly even cry at times. A classic, and certainly a triumph that wouldn't have happened without John Candy. Hollywood truly lost a great actor.
Not John's best film yet still a great movie May 29, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've watched this film a million times and it is still very funny. This is yet another one of John Hughes' films that as well as being ridiculously funny also has a bit of heart and sentiment to it which is shown in the development of Buck's relationship with his oldest niece. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is funnier but this is also very splendid. If you've not seen it you should take time to do so as it is very funny.
John Hughes Does It Again! August 15, 2005 Coincidence Vs Fate (Warwickshire, UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I often wonder what happened to John Hughes. His 80's films were some of the only American cinema I enjoyed during the decade. pWhile, I don't find this film as enjoyable as Planes Trains Automobiles, it is still a widely entertaining film from start to finish. There are too many memorable lines to mention here. pIf you've not seen this film before, then you're in for a treat. A good, old-fashioned feel good film.
Amazing April 2, 2002 Mark O'Neill (UK) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful

Candy's finest hour (and a half!!) November 4, 2000 ian.jackson11@virgin.net (Stoke On Trent, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Teaming up with Macauley Culkin for the first time, John Candy gives his finest performance as hapless, down and out Uncle Buck. Forced to look after his brother's children, Buck soon realises that looking after children is as hard as he had imagined, especially his problematic teenage niece Tia. Follow Buck's rollercoaster ride which sees him transform from the unemployable, drunken bum to a future father. Laughs and tears for everyone and one hell of a great film. BUY IT!!
