Amazon.co.uk Review Nice concept, shaky execution--that about sums up the mixed blessings of British actor Peter Howitt's intelligent but forgivably flawed debut as a writer-director. It's got more emotional depth than most frothy romantic comedies and its central idea--the parallel tracking of two possible destinies for a young London professional played by Gwyneth Paltrow--is full of involving possibilities. It's essentially a what-if scenario with Helen (Paltrow) at the centre of two slightly but significantly different romantic trajectories, one involving her two-timing boyfriend (John Lynch)and the other with an amiable chap (John Hannah) who represents a happier outcome. That's the film's basic problem, however: the two scenarios are so romantically unbalanced (one guy's a total cad, the other charmingly sincere) that Helen inadvertently comes off looking foolish and needlessly confused. Still, this remains a pleasant experiment and Howitt's dialogue is witty enough to keep things entertaining. It's also a treat for Paltrow fans; not only does the svelte actress handle a British accent without embarrassing herself but she gets to play two subtle variations of the same character, sporting different wardrobes and hairstyles in a role that plays into her glamorous off-screen persona. I--Jeff Shannon/I

I want to watch it again and again December 29, 2000 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I hired this film out on video, I think it is a very clever and unusual film, I could watch it again and again. Unfortunately I no longer can as I have replaced my video for a DVD and Sliding Doors is not out in DVD. I hope it will be soon, I shall certainly buy it !!!
A very good film that makes you feel all warm inside January 17, 2002 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I am 15 and male and all my friends are into actions movies. Stereotypically, I am not supposed to enjoy this sort of film, but I think it is really great. It is a nice romantic comedy with an interesting storyline and plenty of British style and wit, without the pathetic, corny, sentimental mush contained in many American films of the same genre. Definitely worth buying.
Excellent concept, excellent execution June 14, 2005 GM12 (London UK) 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
Shaky execution ? I don't think so. A really enjoyable experience is how I would put it, for men and women alike. Gwyneth's english accent is also as good as Renee Zellweger's, and this is definitely a DVD to have alongside Bridget, 4 Weddings and Notting Hill.
classic brit flick with a difference... June 29, 2006 J. Kirkland (Scotland) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Nice easy going well centered film in many ways far superior to Notting Hill.

br /It hits all the right notes and both Gwyneth John Hannah more than excel (especially Hannah)it was also well set up and extrememly well played.

br /The two different scenario's playing of each other though the melodrame once or twice seems to take over. The film thanks to its strong cast witty humour gets over it delivering instead a heart story that far out weights most British films.

br /Class act with John Hannah really coming into his own here and a great ending! Yes its a romance but definetly with a difference and a great film to look at time and again. How I missed this the first time I never know, it deserved to be a hit and was and pretty much still is.

br /Great all round film with the two main leads playing constant tug of war for merit with them both winning and both John Hannah and Gwyneth have deserved every success since. For this film put them both well and trually on the map for a British hit its unconvential and fresh in its approach, something which has thankfully stayed with it made it worth the buy as well!
Indulgence - take with soft cushions, chocolates and wine! March 11, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a lovely movie, warm and gooey without making you want to laugh in the wrong places or feel slightly sick. John Hannah is a gorgeous hero, funny and human, weak and dependable, and just totally scrummy all at once. (Gwyneth's not too bad either, but we didn't watch Pride Prejudice for Elizabeth, did we girls?) The funny bits are funny and the sad bits made me bawl my eyes out. A great night in!
