Amazon.co.uk Review Based on Neil Simon's own play, 1967's IBarefoot in the Park/I is a perennially joyous film starring carefree Jane Fonda and staid lawyer Robert Redford as young newlyweds setting up home in Greenwich Village. Although the opening credits are fragrantly idyllic (aided by Neal Hefti's soundtrack, you can almost smell the blossom in Central Park), the film doesn't idealise apartment living in New York, à la I Friends/I, far from it: Fonda and Redford's apartment is up several flights of stairs; there's a hole in the skylight and the bedroom is the size of a cupboard. All of this puts some strain on the marriage. When Fonda introduces fellow free spirit and ageing, behind-on-the-rent Lothario (Charles Boyer) to her somewhat inhibited mother (Mildred Natwick), the hapless Redford in particular is forced to come to terms with his own inhibitions. Although the second half of the film moves at a less cracking pace than the first, IBarefoot in the Park/I is as exhilarating as a romantic weekend city break. Directo r Gene Saks, scriptwriter Neil Simon and composer Hefti would regroup in 1968 to make the similarly wonderful IThe Odd Couple/I.p BOn the DVD:/B With the aid of filtering, the DVD recaptures the almost unreal colour quality common to films of this period, while the sound is faithful to the nuances of Hefti's soundtrack. The special features are miserly--subtitles, a choice of languages and the original trailer, though this at least conveys the engaging naiveté of the period--("The rarest, unsquarest, happiest motion picture in many a year!"). --IDavid Stubbs/I

this is a movie i bought as i am a dvd addict and this is one of the best buys ever!!Both main lead characters are great!!It is a great film to watch if you wanna get away from all the sex and violence that is on films today....this is in the same league as "Some Like It Hot", "Wizard of Oz" and other such classics..these are films i grew up watching as a 25 yr old and will sty in my dvd collection for ever..watch and be taken away to a time of fun and innocence!
A gem! June 27, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
A film that will have you laughing from start to finish and will leave you with a warm tingling feeling inside. It will delight no matter how many times you watch it. Robert Redford and Jane Fonda excel as the amorous newlyweds whose relationship suffers after they move into the flat from hell. Paul and Cory are in love but their different personalities:he is Mr Sensible while she is kooky and fun-loving, threaten to destroy the marriage just as it is starting. Fine performances from the supporting cast ensure that this timeless classic will be laughed at and loved forever. What's more, there's not an obsenity to be heard anywhere! Robert Redford fans will adore this film, but it will be a hit in everybody's book. An absolute 'must buy'!
I have found a new relationship to an old movie. October 20, 2002 bernie (Arlington, Texas) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Paul Bratter and Corie are newly weds with all the problems of adjusting and helpful relatives. With their first apartment that is several flights up they must pass a large cat with a can opener.pYep, I enjoyed this movie when it first came out. I could relate to the newly weds as many people start out in similar environments. This version of the play has spoiled me to the point that other attempts at "Barefoot in the Park" fall short of my expectations. pA part that I thought was funny but had no relationship to, was the "little pink pills" that Corie's mother (Mildred Natwick) had to take to handle the rich food and drink environment. Now I take little pink pills. pDoes this mean that I am destined to end up in the Hotel National in Mexico City?
Funniest film I ever saw March 13, 2002 Mr. K. Mccaughey (UK) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I just love this film. I'm a terrible person to take to the movies because I could count on one hand the number of films that have ever impressed me.pNeil Simon has written some beautiful and deeply comical pieces but this, for me, is his best. The characters aren't as entwined as usual but you will cry with laughter. I love comedy and laugh a lot - this film I find deeply deeply funny and I highly recommend it. I promise you won't be disapointed.
my favorite classic film May 8, 2001 sue@boyzone70.fsnet.co.uk (Aylesbury, Bucks. UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have seen this film many times and cant get enough of it, so I was really pleased when it came out on DVD. This film is about a newly wed couple (Robert Redford and Jane Fonda) and is about the 1st home (flat) they buy and is so funny and good clean harmless fun. Robert and Jane are brilliant in this film. There just aren't enough words to describe this film all I can say is buy it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Sue.
