Amazon.co.uk Review One of Ridley Scott's most wrong-headed films, this one (like all of his movies) looks fabulous and sounds utterly ridiculous, almost from the beginning. His first mistake was casting the wonderful Gerard Dépardieu as Columbus and forcing him to speak English, which Dépardieu does with decided difficulty. After spending far too much time on the ocean with Columbus' three ships (you wish they would sail over the edge of the world), they arrive in the West Indies, only to turn around and sail back. The rest of the film deals with the not particularly comprehensible politics of Columbus' venture, which leads to the violent slaughter of trusting natives by a band of cardboard villains. Dépardieu, who radiates sympathy, looks as if he's at sea with this material. --IMarshall Fine, Amazon.com/I

a superb Ridley Scott movie! September 16, 2001 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
1492, is stunning with it's images and it's soundtrack. It's honestly a really big triumph in the cinema. Ridley Scott directed 1492, and the movie is highly intelligent with it's direction. Great performances, though the accents are annoying. Besides the accents, everything is perfect in 1492, including Gerard Depardieu's amazing portrayal of Columbus. Be prepared for quite a historical masterpiece. Which 1492 truly is.
A real dark horse ! :-) October 6, 2003 Mr. L. Stacy (UK) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This was one film I inherited from my brother when he gave me his video collection. For months it sat gathering dust until I finally got bored and decided to watch it. How gutted I was I didn't view it earlier!p1492 is one of those very rare films where you can really feel the sheer heart and passion that the lead actor has poured into his role. Gerard Depideau is frankly superb and you instantly feel that he really is Columbus and he really did cross that massive ocean.pWhat's really interesting about this movie though is how it concentrates on not only the events leading up to the discovery but also the aftermath which is so often overlooked. Most people could tell you that Columbus was the guy who discovered America, but not much else about him. This film tells you about the hassles beforehand and his unfortunate struggle thereafter.pA truely moving and educational film. This is worthy of anyones collection.
1492 is AWESOME! April 18, 2001 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Simply an amazing look into the life of Christopher Columbus. We discover who he was, what made him tick, we see what he accomplished and how it really backfired on him. This film shows us largely what Columbus had to do to accomplish his discovery of the New World. It shows us that Columbus didn't know where he would wind up, some thought that they would fall off the edge of the world. Columbus didn't seem to think so, he already knew that the world was probably round. What he did not know was that they were not venturing on a new found, easy way to the Asian continent. Instead they were headed to an unfamiliar place, a place full of surprises, wonder and beauty. A gorgeous, lush, tropical, plant filled paradise. The scene where Columbus comes in contact with a new kind of people, the Indians, is simply well filmed and photographed. That scene captured the surprise Columbus had when he discovered that he was merely just a guest, in a foreign place. Somebody already intruding on a land that has already been conquered, by the Indians who inhabit Columbus's dream. It soon turns into his own nightmare, as he trys to accomplish his dream and the natives rebel against him and his men. Near the end of the film a hurricane hit's his New World, basically surprising him and shattering his dreams. Even before the hurricane the film demonstrates to us that his dream was already being ruined. Moxica a spanish nobleman who tallied along with Columbus on his second voyage back to the New World, basically causes havoc for him there. As a result, there are wars and battles that brew, murder, Indians become his slaves, everything falls apart for Columbus. The film not only captures the essence of Columbus's hardtimes, but it also captures some of the remarkable things he did accomplish. Like the raising of a bell in the New World, his first voyage through the vast Atlantic Ocean, his friendship with an Indian native named Utapan, the love he had for his wife and his kids. This film is a special film with excellent performances from Gerard Depardieu who plays the man Columbus. Also the supporting cast is great (Sigourney Weaver, Michael Wincott, Armand Assante, Fernando Rey, Tcheky Karyo). Ridley Scott who directed Gladiator, Blade Runner, Alien, Thelma and Louise, hit's a home run here and wins. Vangelis's musical score is excellent and adds an extra sense of wonder, to a film that is already full of it.
A visual audio masterpiece! May 25, 2002 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Upon viewing 1492 you probably will notice how great this movie looks. It most certainly does look great. Everything about it works quite well.pThe visuals, the music, the acting and Depardieu's engaging performance of Columbus are some of the highlights of the film. This DVD has an average transfer though, for a movie that deserves so much better picture wise. 1492 is recommended!
Very good film, worthy of a purchase your viewing time! July 7, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I thought that Gerard Depardieu (Green Card) was great in this movie. He easily deserved an actor award for his performance. His english was quite good for a foreign actor, though sometimes his english sounds a little tounge twisted. I thought his personality in this film was just what the movie needed, he delivers. He's Christopher Columbus alright, very convincing. Vangelis deserved an award for his score, and Adrian Biddle deserved an award for best cinematography and Ridley Scott for director. If your a Ridley Scott fan looking at this review and you have never seen this movie, this is one of his best movies, you must see this film. All I can say is to just watch this film and see this wonderful, visually stunning, engrossing film. Enough already, it's superb.
