Amazon.co.uk Review
John Huston was only one of five directors on ICasino Royale/I, the expensive, all-star 1967 spoof of Ian Fleming's 007 lore. David Niven is the aging Sir James Bond, called out of retirement to take on the organised threat of SMERSH and pass on the secret-agent mantle to his idiot son (Woody Allen). The amazing cast (Orson Welles, Peter Sellers, Deborah Kerr and others) is wonderful to look at, but the film is not as funny as it should be, and the romping even starts to look mannered after a while. The musical score by Burt Bacharach, however, is a keeper. --ITom Keogh, Amazon.com/I

5 out of 5 stars If you buy one James Bond mspoof starring David Niven...   September 11, 2004

This film is definetely the best James Bond spoof I've ever seen. Even better than Get Smart. brThe jokes are brilliant and spontaneous, the music is good. The film'slot is confusing as you mainly spend hours trying to decipher it.brI felt that the first act was somewhat slow to get started, but some of the jokes had me rolling on the floor. brDon't hesitate to buy this film. At this price you can't go wrong. And for those of you that don't expect 'the younger generation' to get it - I'm a teenager.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Casino Royale!!!   January 30, 2008

This is brilliant, entertaining stuff! Classic Bond for fans of all ages! It shows Bond in a totally new way and I think that is good. You need to see something different to the EON portrayals of Bond. You might be disappointed with the 1967 edition of Casino Royale, but not forgetting this was a spoof. It was funny, and enjoyable. The 2006 edition was good and before the Casino scene very action packed. The 2006 edition got a bit on the "not really Bond" side after the Casino scene, and the it portrayed Bond as a vulnerable young man. The 2006 edition also varied from the book, with a chase at the beginning with Bond becoming a "00" agent, and had a different Vesper Lynd death. br / br /The 1954 Casino Royale, originally lost, is the most loyal adaption to Ian Fleming's 1952 book. However, there are numerous changes to the adaption, including Bond becoming American, Felix Leiter becoming Clarence Leiter, Vesper Lynd becoming Valerie Mathis and no car chase scene. But all in all it stays loyal to the book and keeps you on the edge of your seat. br / br /It has a perfect story-telling recheme and keeps you gripped the whole movie. It's perfect fun, action and real Bond. It's nothing like the EON films, but it's the most loyal adaption of Fleming's first and as some people might say BEST Bond book. br /

5 out of 5 stars Is this the full-length version?   July 9, 2005

I have not seen this DVD. Does anyone know if this the original full-length version. A few decades ago they showed on television the full-length version with the "back-ward firing gun". Ever since then I have only seen the short version of this film on television with those scenes cut. The gun first appears in Woody Allens office on a shelf in a glass cabinet, for it to vanish from a shelf while a conversation is taking place - look out for it in the background. The gun is later used in a getaway chase where a guard is tricked into firing it at Bond and so kills himself. The gun finally appears in the ending mele at the casino as several characters shoot themselves by mistake.pSo is this DVD the full version with this scenes (and others?) reinstated?

5 out of 5 stars Tremble At His Name   March 21, 2000

Okay, for starters this isn't the 1954 Tv production of Casino Royale, it's the 1967 Columbia Picture produced by Charles K Feldman and directed by no less than five directors including John Huston and Val Guest. When Feldman discovered he couldn't make a straight Bond movie, he decided to do a spoof and this is the result. Considered at the time to be a sprawling mess (the Heaven's Gate of its day), the movie is a pop-art riot that Austin Powers owes a great deal to. It's not a coincidence that Powers resembles Peter Sellers, y'know. Oh, and Seller's character answers to the name Evelyn Tremble. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Swinging!   April 3, 2000

Right, consider this-this film has got David Niven's house being blown up, a remote-controlled milkfloat,a sleek Peter Sellers in a casino with Orson Welles and Ursula Andress,Woody Allen escaping a firing squad,Derek Nimmo,Ronnie Corbett as a mad butler AND Bert Kwouk at an art auction! pAnd all this is set to a Burt Bacarach score! Ignore everything your dad's told you about this,it's a better than a lot of the 'proper' Bonds.Buy it!
