Amazon.co.uk Review
Director Oliver Stone is celebrated in this four-film, six-disc box set collection that includes two-disc "director's cut" versions IJFK/I and IAny Given Sunday/I respectively, plus IHeaven and Earth/I and the documentary IOliver Stone's America/I.p IJFK/I is that rarest of things, a modern Hollywood drama which credits the audience with intelligence. Epic in length--this 198-minute director's cut runs 17 minutes longer than the cinema version--Oliver Stone's film has the archetypal story, visual scale and substance to match; not just a gripping real-life conspiracy thriller, but a fable for the fall of the American dream. Stone's DVD commentary is thoughtful, eloquent and considered. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack and the anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 picture are both first-class. The second disc contains 53 minutes of deleted and extended versions of scenes, all of which are available with or without commentary by Stone, a 10-minute video interview with the real "X", and a half-hour examination of documents only declassified in the wake of the film's release. p IAny Given Sunday/I is a massive 150-minute American football drama which, for all its ferocity and cynicism, is as soft-centred and clichéd as any IRocky/I-style underdogs-make-good crowd-pleaser. This is the director's cut with Stone's commentary ranging far and wide: he is far more interesting and thought-provoking to listen to than his film is to watch. The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 image and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack are both flawless. The loaded second DVD includes Jamie Foxx's audition video, a routine 27-minute making-of documentary, music videos, outtakes set to music, and 33 minutes of deleted/alternative scenes with optional commentary from Stone. DVD-ROM and other features complete an exceptional package.p IHeaven and Earth/I follows IPlatoon/I (1986) and IBorn of the Fourth of July/I (1989) to conclude Stone's Vietnam War trilogy. Where Stone won Best Director Oscars for both previous films, IHeaven and Earth/I proved a box-office disaster and went unrecognised by the Academy. It's hard not to think that racism underlay the commercial failure, for where the hit movies addressed the sufferings of white American soldiers played by Hollywood stars, IHeaven and Earth/I focused on the fundamental victims, adapting the true story of a young Vietnamese woman, Le Ly, who goes from village girl to freedom fighter to wife of a US marine struggling to adjust to life in America to reconciliation in Vietnam. Superbly made, with a stunning performance by Hiep Thi Le as Le Ly, and powerful support from Tommy Lee Jones, this is intelligent, harrowing filmmaking which attempts to understand and bridge the divide between nations traumatised by war. Unfortunately heavily cut to bring it down to a multiplex-friendly running time, the often brilliant 135 minutes on show suggest a longer modern classic ended-up on the cutting room floor. The DVD features an incisive commentary by Stone, who alone of major Hollywood directors fought in Vietnam. Confirming that IHeaven and Earth/I was heavily cut is the inclusion of 48 minutes of deleted/extended scenes, including a vastly extended 22-minute opening, Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 picture are excellent. p IOliver Stone's America/I is a 53-minute interview in which Stone talks candidly about his films, concentrating on the trio included in the IOliver Stone Collection/I, firing off considered opinions at a rapid rate. Also included is Stone's student film, ILast Year in VietNam/I, clearly influenced by the French New Wave in general and IL'Année dernière à Marienbad/I (1961) in particular. I--Gary S Dalkin/I

4 out of 5 stars Exclusive content significantly enhances this box set   April 4, 2002

This fairly obscure release is essentially a vastly reduced version of the region 1 Stone collection which featured ten titles from various distributors. In this set you get four of the Warner titles, three of which are features and the fourth a documentary. On the negative side the documentary: Oliver Stone's America is little more than an hour long interview with Stone which covers familiar ground. To the best of my knowledge it is exclusive to this set but should really be considered as a bonus inclusion. pThe 2-disc special edition director's cut of Any Given Sunday is identical to the separately available version, which is no bad thing. Excellent performances from a great ensemble cast, exciting camera work and a terrific soundtrack make it very watchable. Technically the disc is almost flawless with a beautiful anamorphic transfer dolby 5.1 sound and a loads of supplemental material. pThe region 2 version of the underrated Heaven and Earth is exclusive to this collection. The film got an unjustly bad press on release. It's not Stone's best work but it is perhaps his most emotional, humanistic film with a moving story, beautiful photography and a superb score by Japanese composer Kitaro. The image quality is not perfect. There are speckles and imperfections throughout, but it is anamorphic. Considering the film was not financially successful, a 5.1 sound mix, commentary by Stone and nearly an hour of deleted scenes are very welcome extras. pAlthough JFK is available separately it's a dreadful disc. It's the theatrical version, non-anamorphic, featuring 2 channel sound and no extras. But the version exclusive to this set is the directors cut, featuring a fantastic anamorphic picture, 5.1 sound, a Stone commentary track and an additional disc of extras. Combined with the fact that the film is awesome this title is the highlight of the set. pOverall you get 2 titles you can't get separately and a vastly superior version of JFK. The price is also much cheaper than most box sets making it a smart buy for Stone fans.
