Amazon.co.uk Review
A perfect marriage of novel but incisive writing, acting and direction, IBig/I is the story of a 12-year-old boy who wishes he were older, and wakes up one morning as a30-year-old man (Tom Hanks). The script by Gary Ross(iDave/i) and Anne Spielberg finds some unexpected ways of attacking obvious issues of sex, work, and childhood friendships, and in all of these things the accent is on classy humour and great sensitivity. Hanks is remarkable in the lead, at times hilarious (reacting to caviar just as a 12-year-old would) and at others deeply tender. Penny Marshall became a first-rate filmmaker with this 1988 work. i--Tom Keogh/i

5 out of 5 stars Big   May 2, 2005

The idea of the child in an adult's body (or adult in a child's body even) has been done in films before this, in films after this and will probably be done again in the future.pWhether "Big" is the best of the bunch is a pretty subjective matter but in my humble opinion it simply has to be.pTom Hanks is simply wonderful as the 13 year old Josh Baskin and was quite worthy of his Oscar nomination. He brings an innocence to the role that is absolutely perfect, he never goes childishly silly and he never acts like a young boy pretending to be grown up, he simply acts like a 12 year old and the performance is incredibly realistic.pI think this is where this film scores over some of the other of this ilk, in that it concentrates on the golden times of childhood and doesn't become just a situation comedy. It reminds you of how wonderful it was to be 12, when the summer days seemed endless. It reminds you of how central your family was when you were young and how "best friends" really were the best.pApart from Hanks there isn't really much room for anyone else. Robert Loggia as the kindly toy company boss is good value and Elizabeth Perkins as Hank's love interest performs with sensitivity. Special mention though for two fantastic child performers in both David Moscow as the young Josh but especially to Jared Rushton as Josh's best friend Billy.pIt is sentimental, make no mistake about that, but I don't think it can be accused of being sloppy and I'm sure it will delight watchers both young and old.

5 out of 5 stars One Kids Wish Is Another Man's Curse   December 26, 2008

Tom Hanks plays the role of young boy Joel Baskin, a usual pre-teen who just wants to have fun and play with his mates. He sees an exciting arcade machine in the fair one day and decides to pop a quarter inside - he is asked to make a wish, he wants to be big. br / br /He wakes up to find he's a grown man, of around 25-30 and has to grow up fast to deal with adulthood, and find a job to keep him fed, clothed and a roof over his head. He finds out that it's all not as easy as he'd like it to be, and he has the fortune of finding love - yet he has to learn about it too. br / br /This is a great fantasy movie which I have loved for years. When we were kids we all wanted to be grown up so our parents would stop nagging us to clean up our bedrooms, and this is the consequence of doing so. I like the mythical aspect of it all, and the funny quirks you'd find normal as a kid, but just isn't acceptable as an adult. Tom Hanks is amazing in this, and just shows you what an actor he was before he got all serous on us. The supporting cast are great too. br / br /This is a great movie for a young one between 9-13, but also very good for adults. I would suggest you get the Special Edition as it has all the extras and commentaries you might just enjoy more. br / br /This is a classic tale, and well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent film   August 18, 2003

I love this film. Tom Hanks is superb in the role of Josh Baskin, a kid whose life is suddenly tranformed by a fairground machine. Sick of not being noticed by the girl he likes, he inserts his coin into the spooky looking machine and wishes to be big. The next day, he wakes up to find he's just that: big. Unable to stay at home, he ends up in New York city, with a job and his own apartment. And even a girlfriend! p'Big' is a great way to pass a couple of hours. Hanks is really believable, making his character lovable and someone who you want to watch.pDefinitely a keeper for my collection!

5 out of 5 stars when you were a kid ever dreamed of being BIG?   December 1, 2000

This film is a real throw back to the great era of real comedy adventure the 80's. The film is based around a typical school boy whos wish becomes reality with comical effects. While Josh is at a funfair with his parents he sees the girl of his dreams waiting in line for a ride but she however doesnt notice him. In an attempt to impress her he decides to join her on the ride however is refused on for being too small. This rejection sends Josh walking around the funfair heartbroken and feeling stupid until he comes across a machine that grants wishes. Without a thought he puts his money in and asks to be BIG. The next morning however he wakes up a lot bigger than what he used to be, his wish has come true this leads to him discovering that being big just leads to even bigger problems. This romantic comedy leads him into problems such as finding a job, meeting a girl and not to mention being hunted down by his own parents for the kidknaping himself (the younger Josh). All he has to rely on is his best friend who is still in school. Tom Hanks produces a great performance in this film and shows a real contrast to his serious role in Saving Private Ryan. This is the type of film that made him an idol in the 80's unmissable fun with a romantic element that will leaving you laughing and crying. All thats left to be said is will Josh ever get his own life back or we he have to come to terms with being a 12 year old boy in a 30 something body?

5 out of 5 stars Hanks' best ever role?   March 2, 2008
Stampy (England)
In his first Oscar nominated role, Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) gives an outstanding performance as teenager Josh who makes a wish on a fair ground machine to be big. The next morning, Josh wakes up to find his wish has come true. br / br /Director Penny Marshall's second film is a wonderful tale about the differences between teenage life and the grown up world with Hanks a catalyst in perhaps his best ever role. br / br /The film contains many typical elements of both the young and the old world. From playing computer games at home to organizing promotion meetings, Big truly captures how life can transform quickly; just overnight for some of us (which was a brilliant idea to capture the true meaning of growing up). br / br /It's a very good natured comedy and some very clever jokes are encoded to justify the genre beautifully. br / br /There are some good feel moments, watch the piano scene in the toy store, comedy and enjoyment at its very best. br / br /Jared Rushton (Honey, I shrunk the kids) has a marvellous role as Josh's best friend. Their song is really heart warming and humorous and the adventures they have together are great fun and epitomize childhood. br / br /But its Hanks who steals centre sage with his dedicated performance as Josh. On build up to the film, he followed David Moscow around, who played young Josh, to see how he acted in real life and portrayed his actions in the film, a wonderful achievement and a great role. br / br /Though the film follows a few clichés towards the end it is one of the best family comedies ever made. br /
