Amazon.co.uk Review Director Mimi Leder's third movie, IPay it Forward/I, finds her moving into softer, more intimate territory after making her name with a pair of high-budget action spectaculars, IThe Peacemaker/I and IDeep Impact/I. This is a would-be heart-warming fable about the power of human kindness, but it's handled with such heavy sententiousness as to suggest that she might do better sticking to the big-bang stuff. Haley Joel Osment (IThe Sixth Sense/I, IA.I./I), son of a struggling lone parent (Helen Hunt) in Las Vegas, is influenced by inspirational teacher Kevin Spacey to come up with a scheme for social betterment: do acts of benevolence to three people, each of whom then does something good for three more, and so on. Inevitably, the lad's first ventures come to grief, but then the idea starts catching on and spreading, and a reporter in Los Angeles gets wind of it. This IReaders Digest/I-ish scenario, treated with great solemnity by Leder and screenwriter Leslie Dixon, leaves the cast struggling to make something individual out of their pre-cooked roles. As you'd expect given such a line-up of acting talent, several scenes come off better than they deserve, and Spacey in particular does wonders with what is, in effect, two Hollywood clichés rolled into one: not just "offbeat inspirational teacher" but "shy, reclusive burns victim" as well. Interesting, too, to see a Vegas-set movie that shows a low-rent side of the city well away from the glitz and glamour of the Strip. But in the end, all else is drowned out by the clatter of predetermined plot-points being hammered home. pBOn the DVD:/B Extras include a commentary from Leder, and a 13-minute "making-of" documentary that includes cast and director interviews. None of it, though, tells us much we couldn't have gathered from the movie. The clean widescreen (1.85:1) print and the Dolby 5.1 sound deliver on quality, and come fully into their own in the all-out bravura finale--shameless tear-jerking on a grand scale. --IPhilip Kemp/I

A Lesson for All Viewers March 23, 2006 Joan Di (United States) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Pay It Forward is one of the most inspirational movies I have ever seen. The most inspiring characteristics of this movie is the actions of one child making a difference in so many lives. Everyone complains about life, but no one really does anything to change it. In "Pay It Forward" you see that one person can really make a difference, not in just one life, but many lives without ever knowing that person. Hayley Joel Osment is an extraordinary actor with such tremendous vision in his role in this movie. Kevin Spacey, gives one of the best performances of his career as the teacher trying to overcome his own insecurities. And Helen Hunt gives a compelling performance in the movie as well. pI think that classrooms around the globe should have students watch "Pay It Forward" to enlighten youngsters to truly make a difference. You never know the true genius that our own children have inside them.
A must see! October 23, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Nice story but the stunning performances from Spacey and Hunt have you on the edge of your seat with intrigue (in a nice way). The only thing wrong with the film is the music score which we thought sounded almost exactly the same as Erin Brockovich (i.e. not good). Despite the music, this is one of those rare films that you will happily watch again and again and therefore well worth the DVD investment.
One of the best films I have ever seen - unmissable. May 1, 2002 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I borrowed this film from the video shop expecting to be neither amazed nor disappointed. I hadn't heard much about it but from reading the back i thought i'd give it a go. pI can honestly say that this film is one of the best I've seen (and I've seen a lot) and I would rate it in my top three. The story is well written and the three main characters are acted beautifully by Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment. It is the story of Trevor Mckinney who comes up with idea of paying it forward for a social studies class. Instead of paying back a person who has done something for you, you pay it forward to three other people who do the same for three others, therefore the "movement" spreads. The ways in which this idea affects those around it is very moving, trust me, the tissues will be needed.pBuy this film, you will not regret it.
wow March 3, 2006 sooz :) (UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I didn#x27;t think this film would be any good but sat down and watched it anyway. How I was wrong. This story begins with a guy giving another guy his almost brand new Jaguar for nothing. Just because he was #x27;paying it forward#x27;. Then it flashes to 4 months ago. One small child is given an assignment in class and with this he #x27;changes the world#x27;, and well he really does. Paying it forward is where instead of doing a favour for someone who did you a favour you do a favour for someone else, you pay it forward rather than pay it back. It shows how this one child helped many other people with their lives. It#x27;s a tearjerker and a very touching movie indeed. Recommended to everyone!
