Amazon.co.uk Review Enjoyable on many levels ... OK, it's enjoyable on only one level--if you're a big fan of Mike Myers's screwball idea of funny. That this script had been through a lot of hands in Hollywood before Myers agreed to star in it (using his iWayne's World/i clout) seems amazing as most of the truly funny bits here seem to be straight from Myers. Most memorable is his role as his own irascible Scottish father, screaming at his youngest son and talking about the Bay City Rollers. But Myers also plays Charlie, a bookshop owner/poet who falls in love with a "hardhearted harbinger of haggis", the local butcher (Nancy Travis), who may also be a serial killer. Mostly enjoyable, but there's also some weird stuff here. Try as you might, you may never rid yourself of the image of Brenda Fricker and Anthony LaPaglia making out. Also features a great soundtrack with Soul Asylum and Toad the Wet Sprocket. I--Keith Simanton/I

Charming Romantic Comedy July 23, 2000 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Mike Myers is a San Franciscan poet who falls in love with a sexy butcher called Harriet (Nancy Travis). But when he suspects she is in fact infamous Mrs X - a serial killer who has killed three former husbands in a bloody trail across America - he decides to think again. But by then, it is too late... pThis film is a real gem - a gentle romantic comedy flavoured with Myers' unique brand of quirky comedy. The performances by the whole cast are perfect (Myers playing a double role very successfully), and the many comedic details are painstakingly brought to life. The preposterous plot is gleefully played out to its obvious conclusion at a desolate honeymoon hotel, complete with various parodies of Hitchcock and 'The Shining'. pThe film's got an excellent soundtrack too, and the winning performances of Myers and Travis bring to mind the similar awkward pairings of 'Fever Pitch' or 'Notting Hill'. Charming stuff.

There isn't a single thing I can say about this film that does it justice! Just see it and be amazed by Myers at his best! ...that's if ya can hauling that gargantuan cranium around! - Stuart McKenzie. SEE THIS FILM!
A slice of life May 6, 2007 bernie (Arlington, Texas) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) self made poet, has successfully avoided tying the knot with several women by finding out their flaws in the "nick" of time. Looks like his luck may be running out.

br /He falls in love with the local butcher, Harriet Michaels (Nancy Travis), who may be more of a cut-up than she appears. Will Charlie Axe-cept her at face value or will his suspicious nature once again interfere with marital bliss?

br /If he takes the plunge will his friend (Anthony LaPaglia) find out that Charlie is not paranoid and come to his rescue (in time)?

Mike Myers at his best March 8, 2000 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you liked Austin Powers, the first film, and were maybe a little disappointed with the sequel, I would recommend you get this film. It's vintage Myers, as in Austin Powers he plays two characters, this time father and son. He's hilarious as the eccentric Scottish father - Stuart MacKenzie - who sings a great Rod Stewart number at his son's wedding. It isn't just Myers that makes this comedy though, the supporting cast are very strong too. Amanda Plummer demonstrates again how good she is playing a loony. Brenda Fricker is brilliant as Myer's randy Scottish mother. Anthony LaPaglia plays Myer's best friend, a cop who thinks his job lacks excitement, and has some very funny scenes with his Police Chief Alan Arkin. Nancy Travis, the so-called Axe murderer of the title is also good.
SHE AIN'T THAT BAD! August 10, 2003 TOM THE TROMA FAN (UNITED KINGDOM) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mike Myers delivers his best in this hilarious tale of a young man who becomes suspicious that his girlfriend is an axe murderer. Myers is brilliant, specially his performance as his scottish dad, and Nancy Travis is brilliant as the so-called mad axe murderer/ wife to be. Watch it, it's a comedy with an edge!
