Amazonco.uk Review Based on a novel by Susan Isaacs, IShining Through/I is uncomfortably close to Alfred Hitchcock's INotorious/I. This World War II drama concerns a love affair between a spy (Michael Douglas) and a secretary (Melanie Griffith) that goes south when duty turns him cold and pushes her into dangerous, behind-the-lines intelligence work. Liam Neeson plays the gentleman Nazi unwittingly providing Griffith with cover as domestic help. The best parts of the film are the twists and turns in the romance (Douglas is very good at playing a character who can turn off all feeling at will) at the beginning; the German scenes are less compelling despite such high stakes for the heroine. The climax--taking us back to INotorious/I whether it wants to or not--is quite gripping, largely due to Douglas's performance.--ITom Keogh/I

something for everyone!! May 29, 2003 J. M. Ricks (New Braunfels, TX USA) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I love this movie!! It's got something for everyone! I am not a big fan of either Michael Douglas or Melanie Griffith, but they are perfect for the roles they play in this movie. I couldn't imagine any other actors in the same part.pFor the romantics, there's the love story between Griffith and Douglas. For the war buffs, there's tons of WWII movie reels and actual footage of the war. For the people who like lots of action, there's plenty of that- planes, bombs, shooting, spying, chasing, suspense etc.... It's a great date movie because the ramance is balanced with action.pI am so glad this movie in finally available on DVD. I would recommend it to anyone looking for some different to watch.
Fantastic June 25, 2002 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I absolutely love this movie, its got excellent romance with the adorable Melanie Grifith and both her and Michael Douglas put up excellent performances. Be aware though if you do not like romance movies this one might not be right for you. Overall one of my favorit movies albeit not my number one movie.
Watch it! May 30, 2003 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
Although this film didn't do well at the box-office, it is surprising good. pSet in WW2 it follows the story of Linda, a half-Jew, living in America and worried about the fate of her father's Jewish family hiding in Berlin.pThe film shows her story of how she helped the war effort by volunteering to go to Berlin and spy for the US government.pOnce in Berlin, the story progresses and is tense and holds your attention as to who she can trust and what will happen next.pOverall the film is fairly light-weight and easy to watch but with plenty of interesting facts and information about the war.
Shining Through April 30, 2009 Marie Smith (UK) Lovely film! WWII spy thriller/love story. If you love 1940s nostalgia and music you will love this film. Melanie Griffiths brilliantly portrays a spy who goes undercover as a housekeeper/nanny in a German household. When she's compromised and the net closes in, lover and boss, Michael Douglas rescues her to get her out of Germany.
So very, very, very, very, bad it's genius! October 21, 2007 Jalllala 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This film is spectacularly awful. Let's get that straight from the off. Melanie Griffith proves once again that her performances in Something Wild and Working Girl were total flukes as she sleepwalks through this appalling piece of mis-casting. Captain Flappy-jowls, Michael Douglas, is equally bad but for different reasons - He seems to think he's in a good film (not the ludicrous cartoon this really is) and throws himself into badly written scenes with gay abandon and a recklessness that would be admirable if it weren't so misplaced. Having said all that, this is without a doubt one of the finest unintentional comedies ever made and a total laff-fest from start to finish. HIGHLY recommended. Double-bill it with John Badham's equally hilarious piece of junk, Incognito, for an afternoon of unadulterated viewing hilarity.
