Amazon.co.uk Review An absolute stunner of a movie, IMemento/I combines a bold, mind-bending script with compelling action and virtuoso performances. Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, hunting down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The problem is that "the incident" that robbed Leonard of his wife also stole his ability to make new memories. Unable to retain a location, a face, or a new clue on his own, Leonard continues his search with the help of notes, Polaroids, and even homemade tattoos for vital information. Because of his condition, Leonard essentially lives his life in short, present-tense segments, with no clear idea of what's just happened to him. That's where IMemento/I gets really interesting; the story begins at the end, and the movie jumps backward in 10-minute segments. The suspense of the movie lies not in discovering what happens, but in finding out why it happened. Amazingly, the movie achieves edge-of-your-seat excitement even as it moves backward in time! , and it keeps the mind hopping as cause and effect are pieced together.p Pearce captures Leonard perfectly, conveying both the tragic romance of his quest and his wry humour in dealing with his condition. He is bolstered by several excellent supporting players including Carrie-Anne Moss, and the movie is all but stolen by Moss' fellow IMatrix/I co-star Joe Pantoliano, who delivers an amazing performance as Teddy, the guy who may or may not be on his side. IMemento/I has an intriguing structure and even meditations on the nature of perception and meaning of life if you go looking for them, but it also functions just as well as a completely absorbing thriller. It's rare to find a movie this exciting with so much intelligence behind it. --IAli Davis, Amazon.com/I PBOn the DVD:/b this amazing movie looks crisp and clean in a good anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) picture accompanied by Dolby 5.1 sound. The menu is almost as baffling as the movie itself, but once you master the navigation you'll find interviews, biographies, a tattoo picture gallery and the shooting script among other extras. Most mind-boggling of all, however, is the "Memento Mori" option in the special features menu, which allows you to play a specially re-edited version of the movie in chronological order, beginning with the end credits running backwards! --IMark Walker/I

Wonderful stuff, but forget the hidden extra May 21, 2002 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
There's not much to add to what's already been said about this truly excellent movie. It works because of the way it's made - the trick of telling the story in reverse puts you right inside the head of Leonard and leaves you as confused as he is. My only gripe about this DVD is the thing most other people seem to like - namely the hidden feature which plays the scenes in forward order. I'd seen the film 5 times before I watched this 'forward' version and each viewing was a splendidly confusing experience; the film made more and more sense every time - each viewing held new revelations. Now, having watched it 'forwards' and having had my deductions confirmed, I've rather lost the will to watch the 'normal' film again which I think is a great shame.brSo, buy the disc, watch the film again and again, but only watch the 'forwards' version if you're totally confused.
Monumental film March 11, 2006 Mr. RB FORTUNE-WOOD (UK) 34 out of 39 found this review helpful
Memento is the compelling story of a man attempting to find and kill the murderer of his wife. His problem is that he has short-term memory loss. The story is well told through a jumble of non-sequential vignettes, which reflect the fragmented perspective of the protagonist (Leonard). Leonard attempts to overcome his problem by constructing a world of notes and tattoos in place of memory. Leonard pieces together the evidence with his notes and as the detective mystery unfolds a shocking outcome is revealed in perhaps the greatest cinematic twist of all time. pAs well as maintaining a non-didactic plot, the film manages to ask the important philosophical questions, how can we know our actions have consequences? Does the world stop existing when its not being perceived? pThis is not an easy watch; nevertheless it is a highly rewarding one. All the characters are flawlessly acted by a superb cast that includes; Guy Pearce, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss, who gives a much better performance in this then her awkward performance as Trinity in the Matrix trilogy. The directing is first rate, orchestrating the complex parts portrayed so well by the actors and the filming augments the feeling of disorientation throughout. pOn plot and delivery alone, perhaps my all time favourite film.
Must see for any fan of the film noir thriller December 18, 2001 yomisma85@aol.com (Wales, UK) 36 out of 43 found this review helpful
Leonard Shelby is determined to find justice after the tragic loss of his wife. He has devoted his life to finding the man who brutally raped and murdered her, but there's one big problem; unfortunately the murderer also beat him severely, causing brain damage- Leonard has no short term memory and can make no new memories since the accident. The last thing he remembers is his wife's death.pThe only person Leonard can trust is himself and he has to rely on notes and polaroidbrphotographs to tell him about other people. He has tattoos on his body for more permanent and important facts. If he doesn't write it down, it never happened. pIf you're looking for a straight forward typical hollywood-esque film, then Memento is not for you. Memento will leave you talking about it at work, at home and to complete strangers; you will find yourself joining conversations when you hear the word "memento". Memento certainly isn't a forgettable film, not only does it offer you the stunning performances of Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantaliano, but a complex plot and original screenplay. Nolan tells the story backwards, from the point of view of Leonard, who can't remember the beginning of a conversation by the time it ends. Nolan uses colour as a very important element for the films narration, thebrfilm is shot in colour as well as black and white, colour representing the story toldbrbackwards, and black and white representing the story told forwards, which can prove quite confusing and it takes you a while to get used to the unique altered structure that hasn't been seen since films such as "The usual suspects" and "Pulp fiction" . This is a very risky way of editing a film, but it works for memento and this is what makes it a very peculiar and interesting film. pGuy Pearce, who started off in Australian soaps "Neighbours" and "Home and Away" before moving on to bigger projects such as "LA Confidential" , does a great job of making Leonard believable and likeable even though his condition is extremely hard to understand and identify with. He looks genuinely confused when Leonard is and really makes you sympathise with him. Leonard can't grieve for his wife because it's impossible for him to judge how long it's been since her death, an interesting quotebrfrom him is "how can I remember to forget you?". pOther interesting performances include Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix, Red Planet,Chocolat) and Joe Pantaliano (The Matrix, Bad Boys). Joe Pantaliano plays the Leonard's friend...and Carrie-Anne Moss does a good job playing the sympathetic barmaid, suffering from the loss of a loved one.Their performances are realistic and they seem to be great choices for the parts.pMemento is a refreshing change from the host of formulaic films churned out by the dozen. You can't help but watch it twice and the film throws you along in a rollercoaster of anticipation and curiosity as to what will happen before. If you're prepared to adjust to the novel editing style and psychological premise then it's a mustbrsee for any fan of the film noir thriller. Ten of out nine film this give I'd..;)

Astonishing. Marvellous. Inventive. Original. Have I missed any out? br'Memento' is like a modern Hitchcock-style film, only better in my view. It has the classic elements of a good thriller except that our hero, Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), has a problem with his short term memory so he can only remember things for about ten minutes and then he forgets what he's doing. That and the whole story is told in reverse. brWhy has nobody ever thought of this sooner? Maybe someone else has I don't know but it's so seemless the way writer and director Christopher Nolan pieces together the story bit by bit it is a marvel to behold. I never saw it at the cinema so I had the great opportunity to stick the DVD right back to the start again after watching it the first time, because it is a little disoreintating at first. That is just to make you feel like Leonard, a lot of the time you don't know what is going on and I felt a lot more connected to the character because of this. Watching it more times merely cements whether you like or dislike this film; but I've never met anyone who hates this (except my girlfriend, she loves it but says I watch it far too much). brThe acting is superb; in between the Matrix films Joe Pantoliano and Carrie-Anne Moss were snatched to add great support to Guy Pearce who should have won awards for this role. It's up there with his stint in 'L.A. Confidential'. Everyone should watch this once as it'll open your mind up to more cinematic possibilities. It has done something not many films today can do; showing that not every great film in the world was created before the glorification of violence and sex on our screens. It has heart, honesty and a killer storyline. brSometimes I wish I was like Leonard so I could watch the film over and over again but then I'd never remember how fantastic it really is
Innovative and Thought Provoking August 22, 2002 Mr. A. K. Piggott (Essex) 16 out of 19 found this review helpful
Unquestionably, the finest movie to come out in the last three or four years. Memento will impress anyone with its complex and unique (yet, very easy to follow) narrative. Guy Pearce stunningly portrays Leonard Shelby, a former insurance claim investigator whose life is practically destroyed after the murder of his wife, and infliction of a rare injury which causes him to lose his short-term memory. He receives help from Teddy Gammel (Joe Pantoliano), an undercover cop who he doesn't fully trust, reasons for this distrust are uncovered as the film progresses. Leonard also seeks the help of Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss), a woman who has also lost someone and is more than happy to help out of pity, or so it initially seems. The film's conclusion is bound to raise a few eyebrows, and repeated viewings of this masterpiece are required to give it the justice it deserves.pThe DVD set is very good, packed with a variety of features and an interesting menu structure. Included is a very unique feature in which the film has been re-edited to display the events in chronological order. A highly recommended buy for any intelligent film watcher.
