Amazon.co.uk Review A moderately enjoyable by-the-numbers slasherflick, IValentine/I is more memorable for incidental characters and details than it is for its central plot or the various twists director Jamie Blanks and his large team of writers inflict on us. Years ago, in sixth grade, causal cruelty by a group of girl friends to an outsider boy had, accidentally, terrible consequences for him... and now someone disguised in a cherub mask is killing them, one after another. Most of them have more or less messy relationships--Kate (Marley Shelton) is dating the charming alcoholic Adam (David Boreanaz) and Dorothy (Jessica Capshaw) has attracted the exploitative conman Campbell; as the bitchy bad girl Paige, Denise Richards has a memorable sexual charisma. All of the performances have enough depth to be readable for subtextual clues as to who the killer really is. Some sequences--the pursuit of Lily through a maze on the walls of which highly sexualised advertising images are flickeringly projected--have an impact which, sustained, would have made for a far more interesting film. p BOn the DVD:/B The DVD has a commentary by Jaime Blanks in which he talks frankly about some of the working constraints, a club reel of the song "Opticon" by Orgy, a short behind-the-scenes documentary and subtitles in English, Arabic, Romanian and Bulgarian. The film is presented in a widescreen 2.35:1 visual ratio and has excellent Dolby Sound which ensures that the vigorous dance soundtrack never drowns the snappy dialogue. --IRoz Kaveney/I

My bloody valentine November 28, 2002 Daniel Jolley (Shelby, North Carolina USA) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I think Valentine is a vastly underrated, thrilling horror movie. At its root, it is obviously a slasher film, but this movie features great pacing, true suspense, quite effective musical transitions, and, most importantly, a terrific finish. Valentine not only has a recognizable plot, it incorporates some dandy instances of symmetry that really help tie everything together in the end. I wish I could tell you just how satisfying the ending is. I had my suspicions about the identity of the killer, but several late twists made me doubt my theory, change it, and finally just applaud the filmmakers for essentially keeping me in the dark up until the very end. I know the clues are there all along, and many people may discover the secret well before the final revelation, but this experienced horror fan was kept off-balance throughout. I also have to admit that this movie made me jump a couple of times (and I can#8217;t say that about very many horror movies). With significant help from the musical score, suspenseful scenes were really presented well#8212;just long enough to make you grit your teeth but not long enough to become tiresome. In trailers, the movie looks like another Scream (and there are definite similarities), but Valentine stands head and shoulders above the great majority of slasher films. pA lot of horror films feature attractive women, but Valentine is in a class all by itself. What you get here is Katherine Heigl, Marley Shelton, Jessica Cauffiel, the charming Jessica Capshaw, and#8212;drum roll please#8212;Denise Richards. Denise Richards is absolutely stunning in this movie#8212;the smoldering, sultry looks, the prayer-answering hot tub scene, and the bedroom scene I won#8217;t even attempt to describe. Watching the creepy old detective put the moves on her is rather comical, but you can#8217;t blame the guy for trying. pI must say I really love the killer in this movie. While the concept of the masked killer is far from original, the cherub mask is a cool, creepy look. This killer also enjoys variety, employing a number of different, equally effective implements of death. He works his way up from your basic knife across the throat and crossbow to broken shards of glass and a couple of really innovative weapons. No two deaths are remotely alike, and you can just tell how much the killer enjoys his/her work. The DVD#8217;s energetic club reel of Orgy#8217;s song Opticon is great, but I would caution you not to watch it before watching the movie because it does give a little away in terms of who lives and who dies.pValentine has almost everything I want in a horror movie#8212;a creepy killer, gorgeous actresses, all manner of killings, miscellaneous laughs, an actual plot of some complexity, nail-biting suspense, and a less than obvious ending that totally satisfied this horror fan. I would not have objected to some nudity, but this movie really doesn#8217;t need it. It#8217;s hot, it#8217;s sizzling, it#8217;s sexy, it#8217;s smart, it#8217;s a carnival of murderous delight. You won#8217;t find many slasher films better than Valentine.
Best film of 2000 August 28, 2001 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
Valentine is a horror/thriller and as you would expect in a horror there is lots of killings each significant in there own way. So to back up a brilliant film a good cast is required and with Denise Richards and the one and only angel (David Boreanaz) this film was set to be an all time classic. The film is about a man that years ago was laughed at by everyone at his prom night, and so he seeks revenge for his humiliation. As scream did valentine creates a tense atmosphere resulting in sudden jumps leaving you afraid to leave the room. Like scream the killer takes his time and strikes mainly at night this adding to the already tense atmosphere proved very affective in Scream. The film lasts for roughly 120 minutes and does not fail to fill every minute with a bit of action, drama and suspense Making this film a must buy for anyone.pDVD Extras: " Commentary by director Jamie Blanks " Cast/ crew interviews These giving you an insight into the making of Valentine
A good teenage slasher August 26, 2001 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I first saw this film at the movies and it really was a good choice. It has all the elements that a horror movie should have, and it also includes a great cast. It is a mix of Scream and I Know what you did last summer, hopefully that makes sense. I recommend you buy it. I give it Five stars.

FANTASTIC HORROR! June 22, 2009 F. Mccormick 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is not your common slaher flick. It had a story to it, a message to it and a pretty shocking twist at the end. The death scenes are very creative and the film reminds you a horror doesn't have to be extremly gory to be good. The cast it excellent and the overall plot is interesting and pretty original. The directing is fantastic as well as perfect acting threout the film. The feature length is just right (Not to short, not to long.) The effects and makeup are great. The film is simply fab!
