Amazon.co.uk Review Maybe "nobody's perfect", as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and ISome Like It Hot/I is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy". ISome Like It Hot/I is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behaviour. The results, however, are sublime. --IRobert Horton/I

One of the Best Comedy Movies Ever Made. July 2, 2004 David Rush (Glasgow, Scotland) 29 out of 30 found this review helpful
Actually, strike that title comment. Some Like It Hot has to be one of
br /the best movies of any genre in cinema ever made, as it succeeds on so
br /many different levels. The plot and script are witty and sharp, the
br /characters are easy to identify with and hilarious, the acting is a
br /masterclass in comedy and the laughs are constant throughout. Without a
br /doubt this is one of my favourite films, and contains one of the best
br /closing lines ever. After a movie full of two guys in drag, a sweet
br /girl singing, and a bunch of gangsters pursuing them, what else is
br /there to say except that "Nobody's perfect!" A comedy masterpiece which has never been bettered.
If you haven't seen this you haven't lived... November 24, 2000 17 out of 21 found this review helpful
Perhaps the greatest movie of all time, as reflected in countless polls, Some Like It Hot is a classic feel-good movie. The constant humour is a delightful mix of subtle comedy and bordering-on-farsical jokes, so there's something for everyone. Jack Lemmon has to be seen to be believed as he teams up with the great Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe to create an experience never to be forgotten. Be prepared for side-splitting humour as you witness Lemmon and Curtis join an all-female band - dressed as females - in a desperate bid to escape the mob after witnessing the infamous Valentine's Day Massacre. Monroe inevitably falls for Curtis, providing the required romance to complement the less serious moments. This film is a must-see for anyone, and the lack of colour will be forgotten after a few minutes. If you want to buy any video/DVD this year, this is a dead-cert winner.
Possibly one of the best films ever made May 20, 2003 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
You mix 3 great leading characters, a side-splitting script and excellent direction and what do you have? Some Like it Hot of course! The story itself may seem a little odd at first, what with two out of work musicians fleeeing the mafia by buying wigs, shaving their legs and high-tailing it off to florida in a girl band, but once the comedy starts everytrhing falls into place. Top it off with some classic Marylin songs like "I wanna be loved by you" and the film becomes an unforgettable experience. and while the better known stars Marylin Monroe and Tony Curtis are perfectly cast, especially with Curtis donning a Cary Grant accent to woo the girl, it is undoubtedly Jack Lemmon who steals the show with hundreds of memorable comedy moments which I won't give away! Definately one for everyone.
Without Question The Best Comedy of an Era November 8, 2005 Trey Mercartné 15 out of 20 found this review helpful
"Some Like It Hot" is an outstanding comedy from 1959, directed by the genius that was Billy Wilder and starring three true Hollywood greats. Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis supply all the laughs with thier flawless comedic performances. The film is based around two musicians (Curtis and Lemmon) who find themselves witnesses to a gangland shooting. They search desperatley for a musical job that will send them else where so they can escape the mob who are quickly tracking them down to #x27;#x27;silence#x27;#x27; them. The only available job is that of a girl group. Desperate times call for desperate measures and the unlikely pair take on fake names and through make-up and dress become women impersonators to join the gril group undetected.pOf course, thier quest is not an easy one and it leads to truly hillarious results. I#x27;m not going to reel of endless details of the film#x27;s funniest moments but needless to say there are a whole wealth of them. Marilyn Monroe is outstanding in the film, and it proves once and for all what an underappreciated true great of comedy acting she was. Curtis and Lemmon are a flawless double act and both put in career defining performances here. The special features of the DVD are really great and a tremendous ammount to the set. The documentaries here, including interviews with Tony Curtis and many of the extra#x27;s from the girl band are really great and they add a behind-the-scenes look at one of America#x27;s greatest loved and most enduring comedy movies. Marilyn Monroe was reportedly at her most difficult during the film#x27;s production, but whatever was needed to create thier truly wonderful box office gem was well worth it. "Some Like It Hot" is an undeniably fabulous film that no self respecting film buff or lover should be without.
UNMISSABLE, A MUST MUST BUY!!! December 2, 2001 u.pattichi@virgin.net (London, England) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
This has to be one of the best films of the last century. From the first time that i saw it, i've fallen in love with this film. A flawless performace by all three leading characters. Marylin as the bimboish ukalalee player who's just not very bright i guess, and what can i say about Tony Curtis(Joe) and Jack Lennon(Jerry), the two complement each other like cheese and wine. Joe plays a saxaphone player who falls for Sugar (Marylin), and Jerry as his fairy godmother, keeping one eye on Joe and the other on Oscar Fielding III, a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms, and all eyes on the gangsters they're trying to flee. This film will guarantee laughs from start to finish, and the last line in the film is on of the all time classics!!
