5 out of 5 stars "Our" Movie - Well, One of Them At Any Rate.   May 14, 2007

My wife and I went to see this without really knowing what it was about before hand. We weren't together at that time - and thought we never would be - so it has a special resonance for us now. br / br /Like Beaches, Horse Whisperer, Bridges of Madison County and other such hit novels turned into movies, it delivers a story of emotional turmoil with enough class to raise it above a mere afternoon movie distraction.

4 out of 5 stars Tony Soprano   December 10, 2008

"Thinking of you, br /Your Prince of Tide". br / br / Tony's sluttymistress is channel-surfing and lands on The Prince of Tides. Tony watches with a child's glee, channeling his own muddled attraction for Dr Melfi through the movie, and ends up sending her a bouquet of flowers with a note signed "Your Prince of Tides." br /The gesture is embarrassingly corny, but it's vintage Tony S. He may head New Jersey's most powerful crime family, but he's a sap. br /Brilliant.

2 out of 5 stars Problematic film that shirks important issues   January 20, 2008

This movie sags disappointingly in its second half, tipping over into sentimentality and rehearsing most of the cliches of the 'redemption through love' genre. br / br /Streisland's central role in the production has, perhaps, impacted negatively on the movie. The camerawork, dialogue, score and plotting insist that we view her character as almost angelic. Her character's actions suggest she is not quite so easy to categorise. br / br /The idea that an extra-marital affair can actually be good for a marriage is a little too much to be asked to swallow. There is rather too much in this plot that is problematic and rather too little willingness to face these issues head-on. br /
