It's 20,000 years ago and there's a bit of a nip in the air as the IIce Age/I kicks off. Manfred the well-meaning mammoth, Sid the fast-talking sloth and Diego the duplicitous sabre-tooth tiger form a reluctant and unlikely alliance when they come across a helpless human baby. As they try to return the tot to his migrating tribe, the trio must battle more than just the elements in this harsh world of predators and prey. There's plenty of light relief from the dramatic tension and superb action sequences, notably in the form of the brilliant comic invention Scrat, an apparently insane sabre-tooth squirrel who steals any scene in which he--and his acorn#151;appear (although a flock of keen but hapless dodos give him a close run for the film's comic laurels). p Featuring the voice talents of Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo, IIce Age/I is a thrilling, chilling comedy adventure that's undeniably cool.p BOn the DVD:/B IIce Age/I on DVD boasts a whole host of special features, including commentary by director Chris Wedge and co-director Carlos Saldhona, deleted scenes and trailers. The highlight of the bonus material is the exclusive short "Scrat's Missing Adventure" but for the real nitty-gritty go to "Under the Ice". This contains numerous featurettes of varying lengths, including "The Making of Ice Age", "Behind the Scenes", "Art of Effects" and "Sid's Voice Development". These tell you pretty well everything there is to know about the film and its creation. For additional humour check out the brief "Scrat Reveals" segment and Sid's commentary sequences. --IHelen Baker/I

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous fun for kids aged 3 - 103   September 11, 2002

In the modern genre of computer animated kids films, this ranks among the very best. Unlike so many kids films, adults will enjoy every minute of this one - with or without the kids. pIt's a simple story, of course - my 3 year old had no problems following the plot. But there are endless background funnies and asides for the grown ups that make this film a gem. Like Shrek, the heroes of this film are about as imperfect as they come. Much of the humour comes from the interactions of the 3 main characters, none of whom particularly want each other's company.pLisping Sid (lishping shid) is hilarious throughout, and the squirrel who turns up between scenes will split your sides. pWith none of the gushing sentimentality that Disney relentlessly pump out, this film is way out in front of other recent mediocrity, such as Dinosaur or - God help us - Jimmy Neutron. In my book, it even beats Monsters Inc for all round family entertainment.pThis is the best kids film since Shrek and is a lot more entertaining than many recent adult titles. pBuy it - however old you are!

5 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Film - when's Ice Age 2??   October 25, 2002

I saw Ice Age twice at the pics - and bought the video the day it came out (I'm a 35yr old female, so this isn't just for kids or male 'kidults'!). Ice Age is pure, simple entertainment from start to finish. The animation is sharp, vivid and exceptionally well done, with subtle emotions being conveyed perfectly. The pace of the film is spot on and there's no cringeworthy 'let's break into a song' moments. If you enjoyed the wit and quick one-liners of Shrek, or if you're simply a fan of lush computer generated animation - buy Ice Age, you won't be disappointed.

This special addition DVD has got to be one of the funniest family films Ihave seen in a long time. It encompasses entertainment for the wholefamily, characters that appeal to the kids, Jokes and play on words toentertain the adults, and graphics that amaze everyone. Especially onceyou have seen the extras where they explain how they did the specialeffects and how the story came about. This film is a must for anyone whoenjoyed films like toy story or monsters inc. Buy it you wont regret it.

Probably the best computer generated film thats not Pixar, Ice Age is full of quirky animal characters that are brillantly animated and voiced. A laughed my socks off at the crazy jokes and was dazzled with the bright living world the studio had created. Scrat has to be one of the best characters ever created. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Frozen Fun for all the Family   June 4, 2003

When buying a DVD for your kids to watch, a question that you must ask yourself is whether you, the parent, will be as enamoured of a film on the 858th showing as the first. Ice Age scores highly on this test. Yes, it's basically a hackneyed quest/road movie, but it is kept afloat by sharp humor and the excellent acting by John Leguizamo as wise-cracking Sid the Sloth; Ray Romano as Manfred, the Mammoth with a Tragic Past; Dennis Leary as the sly Diego the saber-tooth; and not forgetting his sinister superior, Soto, played by Goran Visnjic... perhaps better known from his white coat in ER. Oh yes, and the great running gag of Scrat the Squirrel and his 20,000-year quest to bury his acorn. There are some wonderful comedy moments (the episode of the TaeKwon Dodos is my favourite) and the whole package has kept my family entertained for months.
