Amazon.co.uk Review
Either Dean Koontz shouldn't adapt his own bestsellers, or his 1983 novel IPhantoms/I was a pack of horror clichés to begin with, or this movie is 15 years past its due date. What might have seemed fresh at the time of IPoltergeist/I now feels like it was made from a derivative script with pages missing. Plagued by reckless leaps of logic, the movie starts with adequately eerie atmosphere and a perversely twisted performance by IScream 2/I's Liev Schreiber, but decays into a familiar hash of gross-out effects, resulting from the annihilation of a small Colorado town by an evil force known as "The Ancient Enemy". In a dreary role that insults the twilight of his distinguished career, Peter O'Toole plays a paleobiologist whose crackpot ideas have become tabloid fodder; but he holds the key to conquering the beast. Or does he? Sure enough, an obligatory coda leaves room for anticlimactic doubt. IPhantoms/I has a few genuinely creepy highlights, including a devilish beastie resembling an angry flying scorpion, and horror fans will surely find something to admire, but everyone else is advised to proceed with caution and lowered expectations. --IJeff Shannon, Amazon.com/I

5 out of 5 stars A spooky slice of the horror genre   August 3, 2000

This didn't make much of an impact when it was released in cinemas or on rental, probably because of a lack of publicity. However, this is a very atmospheric and claustrophobic film about a group of people trapped in a small town with something...... When I saw this, I recognised many celebrities, who were up and coming at the time that this was made. It's fun to see them in their early days and the acting is top notch. Plotwise, it opens up well and moves along at the right pace. The ending is a bit strange and you probably won't have guessed it, but it is a lot of fun. I would class this movie as a horror movie, but there is hardly any gore and it relies on what you don't see, which is better horror than seeing every hack and slash. This film is brilliant and it has been on rental for over a year, but is well worth the wait. At £.. it's at a bargain price, so there's no excuse for you not to buy this little gem!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!   April 6, 2002
Most people would look at the cover and think cheese, but actually it's very good. Late night I was watching it on TV and I got really into it. It returns to the way hitchcock made films scary with not so much gore, but it's a surprisingly scary and atmospheric film especially when there just looking around the completely deserted town, that was spooky.brA very enjoyable horror!

4 out of 5 stars Original, scary, super   June 28, 2006

I honestly don't understand why this movie was given such bad reviews. I think it was pretty original for I don't remember seeing a lot of other films whose storyline is much similar to this one. The acting is fairly good, but above all the atmosphere is really scary. Small, lonely Colorado town where apparently everybody has disappeared or died in the strangest of ways which definitely rules out a human killer. An ancient creature from thousands if not millions of years ago that has no apparent shape but can take over any creature by absorbing all of its abilities, knowledge, shape, and even instincts. I really enjoyed the reesearch and findings the characters did in this film on the history of this creature. The idea that its manifestation in some small, unknown town could lead to the destruction of the rest of the world. br /What can I say. I don't know what's so unlikable about that, especially to horror fans. I'm only rating it with a 4 because it's a long movie. Peter O'Toole's performance is outstanding, Ben Affleck's as well. Rose McGowan is quiter and less energetic than we're used to seeing her. The graphics are truly fantastic and they contribute a great deal to the scare element. br /I recommend buying it, if for no other reason - just for the atmoshere of the small town and the storyline itself.

4 out of 5 stars Diamond in the Rough   March 8, 2004
OK, I'll admit the only reason i watched this was because it was mentioned in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The thing is i am really glad i made the effort. Its never gonna be a classic but it is an immensely watchable bubblegum film. Its one of those you can put on and not really worry about missing bits but is still a good watch. U gotta see it, if only once.

4 out of 5 stars Affleck IS the bomb in Phantoms!!!   November 7, 2004
Don't be so mean about this film!brYes, I know its s**t but its the best kind of s**t. The kind that has good actors going for it and getting a nice pay cheque at the end.brIts fair to say it feels cleche riddled. Thats probably becouse it was made 20years too late. When the book was written this sort of story hadn't been filmed so much but now it just seems old hat. And there is a certain Residant Evil feel to the whole thing.brIt does have some good actors enjoying some crappy lines and silly ideas but thats all you need in this sort of flick. And Ben Affleck IS the bomb!brPetter O'Toole is a god and to see him getting paid good money just to take the mick warms my heart!brThis film is B movie rubbish that makes great viewing with friends. Let it flow over you.
