Amazon.co.uk Review
Decent, lighthearted and fully amusing slapstick is hard to come by these days, and 1993's IGroundhog Day/I manages to also be genuinely wise about the human condition. All this and belly laughs too! Bill Murray stars as Phil, a bored, petulant news reporter, who is ordered to give his annual live report from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2. Though desperate to get out of the one-horse town and the appallingly sentimental assignment, Phil finds himself reliving the same day over and over again until he finally mends his ways. The film takes an absurd situation and explores its every imaginable comic possibility. Because none of the other characters are aware that iGroundhog Day/i is continually repeating itself, Phil goes through a repertoire of responses, from conniving lust for Rita (Andie MacDowell) to gleeful nihilism to a Zen resignation worthy of Buster Keaton. Murray is reliably good, and this flick gives him a chance to be warm (though never fuzzy).

Amazon.co.uk Review
Bill Murray does warmth in IGroundhog Day/I, a romantic fantasy about a wacky weatherman forced to relive one strange day over and over again, until he gets it right. Snowed in during a road-trip expedition to watch the famous groundhog encounter his shadow, Murray falls into a time warp that is never explained but pays off so richly that it doesn't need to be. Director Harold Ramis (who co-starred with Murray in IGhostbusters/I) takes an absurd situation and explores its every imaginable comic possibility. The elaborate loop-the-loop plot structure cooked up by screenwriter Danny Rubin is crystal-clear every step of the way, but it is Murray's world-class reactive timing that makes the jokes explode, and we end up looking forward to each new variation. Because none of the other characters are aware that Groundhog Day is continually repeating itself, Murray goes through a repertoire of responses, from conniving lust for Rita (Andie MacDowell) to gleeful nihilism to a Zen resignation worthy of Buster Keaton. IGroundhog Day/I manages the rare feat of producing belly laughs in abundance and also being genuinely wise about the human condition. --IDavid Chute, Amazon.com/Ip BOn the DVD:/B the disc presents the movie in a 1.85:1 ratio and with Dolby surround sound. There are trailers for IGroundhog Day/I, IGhostbusters/I and IMultiplicity/I, along with filmographies for Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Andie McDowell and Chris Elliot. This remastered edition also comes with an extended documentary "The Weight of Time", which offers insights into the "European"-style script and production difficulties, but is a little over-lavish in its praise of the actors on set. Thought-provokingly, the documentary also touches upon the spiritual nature of the movie and what it has meant to an audience beyond being a simple comedy. Also included here is a director's commentary by Ramis which, although informative, has too many long breaks and would surely have benefited from the addition of Bill Murray to the conversation. --INikki Disney/I

5 out of 5 stars "It's Groundhog Day! Again......"   September 8, 2006

Every now and again you see a movie that acts as the perfect vehicle for an actor. In Groundhog Day we see Bill Murray's. The movie is replete with fine performances from the man ably supported by the likes of Chris Elliott and Andie Macdowell, but the film is Bill's and his alone. br / br /The story is basically what would you do if you could repeat the same day over and over again? What would it do to you? Would you turn it to your advantage? Or What? Bill Murray as TV Weatherman Phil Connors is stuck in a loop forever repeating "Groundhog Day" the day he meets Punxsutawney Phil the weather sensing Groundhog. Connors goes from surprised bafflement at the repeating of the day though euphoria, depression and then sublime acceptance. The movie at no time even dares to explain why he's repeating the day, and in my opinion had it done so it would have spoiled the film - Groundhog Day focuses on Phil Connors and the story of the man. br / br /I loved this movie and I watch it again and again and again......

5 out of 5 stars This is the stuff that dreams were made of!   December 8, 2000

Have you ever wanted to be able to relive a day in your life? Ever thought what would be possible if you got trapped in time? Well this is it. Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell are fantastic in their parts of a depressed weatherman and the woman he falls in love with. As the film progresses you see more and more of the way Harold Ramis has fantasised about having an endless day, and the humour in the film is sublime. I particularly enjoyed watching Murray's character develop within the small US community, and with fantastic fillers such as Ned and Larry, how could you resist?pMAKE SURE YOU WATCH THIS FILM ESPECIALLY IF YOU LOVE GOOD EASY COMEDY.

5 out of 5 stars And for best 'feel good' movie award ever..   June 4, 2009

I know anyone reading this will probably feel like they've read it before.. Ok, enough deja vu joking, 60 other people beat me to it. My favorite was the one who hadn't seen the joke..'it is not a film I would want to watch more than twice, having seen it on television once already, 10 years ago'..hope you don't mind me saying, but don't you preview this stuff before you post it? br /Anyhow, the film is a genuine five star one, whether you've seen it before or not, the storyline, the acting, even the 'moral of the tale', and best of all(for me), the jazz version of Rachmaninov. Classic! br /PS. How did they get that groundhog to drive a pick-up, and come to think of it, I never saw a 'no animals were hurt'..disclaimer either!

5 out of 5 stars Bill Murray funny-bitter-twisted overload   December 27, 2007

I love this film, especially the thought of putting Bill Murray into a time look until he has to resort to learning the piano and being nice! br / br /A great film, with Bill Murray being his normal hilariously grumpy self, and everyone else around him going about their robotic ways day after day (except that it is the same day). It invites the viewer into a fantasy to ask "what would YOU do if you were stuck in a time loop?", (I would definitely push that annoying insurance salesman into the puddle, lol!) a bit like the hypothetical: "what would you do if you won the lottery?" that always comes up in conversation from time to time. br / br /What an interesting idea - that we're stuck in a temporal loop, until we learn our lessons and learn how to get out. That sounds rather like reincarnation. br / br /Anyway it's a fun entertaining film, with a wicked sense of humour.

It is said that if we don't learn from history we are bound to repeat it. Could it be that the actors journey in this movie shows a little glimpse as to the souls journey if we assume that we have a soul? That we only really graduate once we have learned the lessons that are here on this planet and that otherwise we will just get reincarnated over and over and given another chance at learning. br / br /Initially the character, once he realises that he is "stuck" starts abusing his power and sees how he can fulfill his hedonistic desires by manipulating events and people. As he gets bored with himself and his tricks, he discovers the creative principle, and starts on the journey of serving others and contribute to life and thus he starts learning. br / br /So this movie had a strong effect on me and I rate it highly both because it a highly entertaining movie, which is well acted, but especially because of the deeper layer that is there to be seen. br / br /I would recommend the book "The Secret History of the World and How to Get Out Alive" by Laura Knight-Jadczyk, as it explores in depth the idea that life is a school, where we have the possibility to learn. br /
