Amazon.co.uk Review
When Brandon Teena, a young man with an infectious, aw-shucks grin and an angelic face that's all angles, wanders into Falls City, Nebraska, he takes to the town as if it's a second skin. In little time he's fallen in with a gang of goofy if temperamental redneck boys, found himself a girlfriend, and befriended enough people to form something of a small family. In fact, it's the best time Brandon's ever had. However, there are shadows looming over Brandon's life: a court date for grand theft auto, a chequered criminal record, and a seemingly innocuous speeding ticket that could prove to be his undoing. Why? Because as it turns out, Brandon Teena is actually Teena Brandon, a woman masquerading as a man. This fascinating story was based on real-life events (as documented in IThe Brandon Teena Story/I) that occurred in 1993 and ended in tragedy: Brandon's rape and murder by two of his supposed friends. Despite this horrible outcome, however, in the hands of director Kimberly Peirce (who co-wrote the unfettered screenplay with Andy Bienen), Brandon's story becomes not oppressive or preachy, but rather oddly and touchingly transcendent, anchored by Hilary Swank's phenomenal, unsentimental (and Oscar-winning) performance. Swank inhabits Brandon's contradictions and passions with a natural vitality most actresses would refuse to give themselves over to. Brandon's deception is doomed from the start, but Swank's enthusiasm is infectious, and when Brandon starts romancing the sloe-eyed Lana (a pitch-perfect Chloë Sevigny), he finds a soulmate who wants to transcend boundaries and fated identities as much as he does. The last part of the film, when Brandon's true identity is discovered, is truly painful to watch, but in between the agony there are touching moments of sweetness between Brandon and Lana, who wrestles with the truth of who Brandon actually is. You'll come away from IBoys Don't Cry/I with affection and respect for Brandon, not pity. --IMark Englehart, Amazon.com/I

5 out of 5 stars Boys do cry.......after this   March 24, 2004

Where do I begin ? Well, firstly, probably one of the best performances ever by an actress. Secondly, a heartbreaking film. Hilary Swank is tremendous. A very deserving Best Actress Oscar winner(1999)in this movie as sexually confused Teena Brandon and her relationship with the women in her "new" life as a "man". It shows us upfront how sexual orientatipn and judgment actually becomes one, and it simply moves me to tears every single time I watch it. The torment, confusion and guts to be yourself as a gay person comes across with sensitivity and harshness at the same time. That is where this small masterpiece finds its beauty : In hard-hitting binary storytelling. And passionate acting. Just watch it. Believe in it. And cherish it for always. Then we'll talk again. Unbelievable.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful but Tragic   September 26, 2002

What I have to say about this film won't take very long at all!pIt is absolutly wonderful. A masterpiece. Superb acting, great cast.pThe story centers around a young girl who says she isn't gay as she feels like she is a man. She dresses as one, acts like one and even puts a sock in a certain place to complete her look.pThen she meets a femine (Chloe) girl who is in a destructive relationship and they soon fall in love.pThe sex scenes are mild but important. And the tragic ending when the ex-boyfriend finds out is so realistic.pThis fact based story of forbidden love, confused sexuality, heart break, love and revenge is so wonderfully and realistically portrayed that even the most insensitive person could not fail to cry at the end.pWonderful dark and magical stuff

I think it is strange that in the 'customers who bought this also bought...' box all the films are lesbian titles. at the time of the film's release, and since the DVD release, this has been classified as a gay/lesbian interest film. this, however, does not do the film justice at all. Giving it such a definition as 'gay/lesbian interest' does not give it justice at all: anyone who enjoys thoughtful, romantic films will fall in love with Boys Don't Cry regardless of their sexuality. This is a truly brilliant film, one of the most underrated of the 90s. Hilary Swank is excellent as Teena Brandon, but to me the most compelling performance was that of Chloe Sevigny. Her's is the most complex character, confused by her love for Brandon. She plays her character beautifully, and you will find it hard to tear your eyes away from her whenever she is on screen. the scene where brandon makes love to her is painfully emotional, almost hard to watch at times. The song by The Cure, 'Boys Don't Cry' is one of the best pop songs ever, and completes an almost perfect film.pWill change your perception of human relationships forever.

5 out of 5 stars Being different in Fly-Over country   May 6, 2005

After applauding Hilary Swank's Best Actress Academy Award for her role in MILLION DOLLAR BABY, I thought I'd better rent BOYS DON'T CRY, for which Swank also received an Oscar. Where have I been that I haven't seen it until now? pHere, Swank plays Teena Brandon, a 21-year old woman with female genitalia but the sexual inclinations of a male. Ultimately, she'd like a sex change. In the meantime, she cuts her hair short, wraps up her breasts, pads the crotch of her jeans, renames herself Brandon Teena, and sets out to pick-up chicks. Now, in my corner of the world - Southern California - one could pull this off with panache. Trouble is, Brandon lives in Nebraska, and she eventually runs afoul of a couple of good ol' boys, John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Tom (Brandon Sexton), the former being the erstwhile boyfriend of Lana (Chloe Sevigny), the girl with whom Brandon develops a love relationship. The violence John and Tom eventually visit upon Brandon/Teena gives your average bigot a bad name, and reminds me why Nebraska is Flyover Country, especially when it's not pigskin season and the locals don't have Cornhusker football to keep them occupied. (Ok, ok. I admit I'm being unfair to Nebraska. After all, I'm not from Oklahoma and a Sooner fan.) pSwank's role in BOYS DON'T CRY is, in many ways, grittier and incorporates more extremes of emotion than that in MILLION DOLLAR BABY. At times, I winced and slowly sunk down in my seat, much as I did as I watched Charlize Theron's bravura performance in MONSTER, and MILLION DOLLAR BABY never elicited that reaction. Here, Hilary elevates what might otherwise be a 3 or 4-star soap opera about the lives of trailer trash to 5-star heights. pThe sad part is that BOYS DON'T CRY is based on a true story. At the time the film was released, the real-life John and Tom were serving prison sentences. As for Teena, well, it's a shame she didn't live in a more tolerant, cosmopolitan environment. For some, the great empty space of America's Heartland is not the place to be.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable story   April 2, 2007

This is the true story of Teena Brandon (Hillary Swank), a lonely teenage girl living as a man, "Brandon Teena." She's been in trouble with the law and has no roots. When she comes to a new town, she is befriended by a "family" of perpetually drunk low-lifes, and is attracted to Lana (Chloe Sevigny), who dreams of going to Memphis and being a karaoke singer. She and Brandon fall in love, angering two men who begin to suspect Brandon's true identity. br / br /Swank's performance as Brandon/Teena is simply remarkable. She conveys the heartbreak and misery of an outsider, a misfit, and the need for love that is universal; she won the Oscar in 1999 for this role. Sevigny is convincing as the girl who falls in love with both Brandon and Teena. Despite its low-budget (Swank earned only $3,000), this is an extremely well-made, thought-provoking, and deeply moving for adults. (There are sexual and extremely violent scenes.) A riveting, shocking, and very sad story with sensitive acting and direction.
