4 out of 5 stars Interesting update of classic novel.   October 29, 2002

Crime Punishment USA is a rather interesting adaptation/update of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's classic novel Crime Punishment. Made in the wake of William Shakespeare's Romeo Juliet , which saw many classics updated to the modern high school age- this, along with Great Expectations and Clueless remain the highlights. pMonica Keena is excellent here, a talented young actress who was in While You Were Sleeping and Dawson's Creek (Seasons One Two)- watching this it seems sad that she has been reduced to Friday the 13th in Space. She ought to be on a level similar to Katie Holmes, Rachel Leigh Cook Michelle Williams. pThe adaptation is much more interesting than the 2001 version by the BBC- which stayed in period but attempted to use modern camera techniques to appear edgy. This is a timeless story that lends itself well to contemporary America and questions that great society as much as Dostoyevsky questioned his own. Added to that there is a great soundtrack by Joey Santiago (The Pixies/Frank Black The Catholics). Pity that this film didn't cross over as Baz Lurhmann's camp RJuliet did; if anyone's thinking of doing The Outsider, don't not call me now...

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, satisfying take on classic storyline   October 13, 2009
Mr. Simon A. Macklin (Northampton, England)
This film was incredibly reminiscent of the massively overrated "American Beauty" by Sam Mendes, but that could just be my interpretation. This was much better though - Dostoyevsky`s "Crime and Punishment" as source material is always likely to produce a decent plot though, no? br / br /The performances are spot-on, and I heartily concur with the viewpoint that it`s a damn shame Monica Keena is now acting the goat in some terrible films, when it seems as though she has potential to be a young actress capable of far meatier roles. Ellen Barkin is excellent as always. br / br /One minor complaint might be that the moral dilemma aspect of the original novel makes a very late appearance - and it doesn`t seem as though Roseanne actually believes that murder is justifiable, as Raskolnikov does; she just wants someone else to take the blame for her actions; and she isn`t quite the poor drop-out student either, but that`s probably where the Suburbia bit comes in. Does the story translate well to modern-day, wealthy familied Americans? I think so, and the film just about avoids slipping into stereotypical outsider vs. conformer themes regarding the character of Vincent. br / br /Overall, I think this is a solid film, worth watching for many reasons; I`m still a little saddened that Monica Keena hasn`t developed into the actress this performance suggests she is capable of.
