Amazon.co.uk Review
First aired in 1990-91, the second series of IThe Simpsons/I proved that, far from being a one-joke sitcom about the all-American dysfunctional family, it had the potential to become a whole hilarious universe. The animation had settled down (in the first series, the characters look eerily distorted when viewed years later), while Dan Castellaneta, who voiced Homer, decided to switch from a grumpy Walter Matthau impression to a more full-on, bulbous wail. The series' population of minor characters began to grow with the inclusion of Dr Hibbert, McBain and attorney Lionel Hutz, while the writers became more seamless in their ability to weave pastiche of classic movies into the plot lines. While relatively "straight" by later standards (the surreal forays of future seasons are kept in check here), Season Two contains some of the most memorable episodes ever made, indeed some of the finest American comedy ever made.p These include "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", in which Homer is reunited with, and ruins the business of, his long-lost brother ("He was an unbridled success--until he discovered he was a Simpson"), "Dead Putting Society", in which Homer lives out his rivalry with neighbour Ned Flanders through a crazy-golf competition between the sons ("If you lose, you're out of the family!") and one of the greatest ever episodes, "Lisa's Substitute", which not only features poor little Lisa's crush on a supply teacher voiced by Dustin Hoffman but also Bart's campaign to become class president. "A vote for Bart is a vote for anarchy!", warns Martin, the rival candidate. By way of a retort, Bart promises faithfully, "A vote for Bart is a vote for anarchy!". --IDavid Stubbs/I p BOn the DVD:/B IThe Simpsons, Season 2/I, like its DVD predecessor, has neat animated menus on all four discs as well as apparently endless copyright warnings, but nothing as useful as a "play all" facility. The discs are more generously filled than Season 1, however, and each episode has an optional group commentary from Matt Groening and various members of his team. The fourth disc has sundry snippets including the Springfield family at the Emmy Awards ceremony, Julie Kavner dressed up as Bart at the American Music Awards and videos for both "Do the Bartman" and "Deep, Deep Trouble" (all with optional commentary). There are two short features dating from 1991: director David Silverman on the creation of an episode and an interview with Matt Groening. TV commercials for butterfinger bars, foreign language clips and picture galleries round out the selection. Picture is standard 4:3 and the sound is good Dolby 5.1. --IMark Walker/I

5 out of 5 stars wow! really good   December 27, 2003

As good or better than the Season 1 set of discs. These discs are jam packed full of quality entertainment... twenty-two episodes from their 2nd season, commentary, 2 Bart videos ("Deep, Deep Trouble", and "Do the Bartman"), 3 different Butterfinger commercials, still photos, DVD easter eggs, and a special Emmy awards presentation. Animation is sharper - even the rougher (Season 1) Simpson's are fine with me. Comic wit is bolder and cruder. Over a decade of prime time animated TV and I still have not seen an episode I haven't liked. pSeason 2 episodes in order: br"Bart Gets An F"br"Simpson And Delilah"br"Treehouse Of Horror I"br"Two Cars In Every Garage And Three Eyes On Every Fish"br"Dancin' Homer"br"Dead Putting Society"br"Bart Vs. Thanksgiving"br"Bart The Daredevil"br"Itchy Scratchy Marge"br"Bart Gets Hit By A Car"br"One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish"br"The Way We Was"br"Homer Vs. Lisa And The 8th Commandment"br"Principal Charming"br"Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"br"Bart's Dog Gets An F"br"Old Money"br"Brush With Greatness"br"Lisa's Substitute"br"The War Of The Simpsons"br"Three Men And A Comic Book"br"Blood Feud"pSeason 2 contains some classic early episodes... a favorite of mine, "The War Of The Simpson's". Marge signs herself and Homer up for counseling. They go to a cottage retreat where Homer battles his marriage as well as a giant fish. Season 2 also introduces the 1st Halloween special ("Treehouse Of Horror")... which is now an annual party for the creators to think outside the box of normalcy. Having so many episodes on a few DVD's is worth it. Quality in picture, dolby sound, and everything else that goes with the incredible technology of the DVD. Only complaint here is it's 4 DVD's... even Homer would want this all on 1-2 DVD's so it's less time getting up off the sofa and having to change the discs in the DVD player. pit also has:p" Animated, Color, Closed-captioned, Box set, Dolbyp" Commentary by on all episodesp" Interviews with James L. Brooks and Matt Groeningp" Bart on the American Music Awards (with commentary)p" "Do The Bartman" video (with optional commentary)p" "Deep, Deep Trouble" video (with optional commentary)p" "Do The Bartman (Director's Cut)" - videop" David Silverman on the creation of an episodep" Licensing and merchandising reviewp" Emmy Awards presentationp" 3 Butterfinger commercialsp" Still Photos (Easter eggs)p" Early drawingsp" Full-screen formatp" Number of discs: 4pA must buy for anyone, even non-Simpsons fans.

5 out of 5 stars Another Simpsons Smash!   October 6, 2002

Now 'The Simpsons' rolls onto Season Two, another super stage in the show's development. This time, you get 22 sizzling stories, with even better extras than the first season, including two music videos to the 1991 hits 'Do the Bartman' and 'Deep, Deep Trouble', the latter of which I hadn't seen for over ten years and was thrilled to finally see it again. This season harks back to a time when the show had first hit the right popularity buttons, and Simpsons mania was springing up everywhere for the first time. And deservedly so. Here Bart is noticably the main character, though Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie still get their moments. Real star of the season, for me, though, is Herb Powell, Homer's warm but tempermental half-brother voiced wonderfully by Danny DeVito, who makes his first appearence in 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou?'p'Old Money' is probably the best episode overall, in which the relationship between Homer and Abe is examined for the first time in great detail, soon to become one of the show's most moving and haunting elements for subsequent seasons, while 'The Way We Was' provides a slick look at how Homer and Marge first came to be together. Phil Hartman also provides voice-overs for the first time in roughly three of these episodes, including 'Homer Versus Lisa and the 8th Commandment', in which various characters respond differently to the moral dilemma of obtaining an illegal cable TV hook up. Lisa in particular is horrified that a Commandment is being broken, and tries to show her indifferent father the error of his ways, in a wonderful story that surely proved that the Simpsons were fundamentally a highly moral (and extremely entertaining) show. 'Lisa's Substitute' and 'War of the Simpsons' are simply too wonderful to describe! So what are you waiting for? Click those buttons and order this stunning item today!

5 out of 5 stars Course it's great - It's The Simpsons!   July 20, 2002

First of all, "viewer from cambridge" the comedy falling down the cliff scene is not missing - I don't know if you have got a different version than me, but mine showed the episode Bart The Daredevil in its entirety.pWhereas we all bought season 1 to be reminded how it all started, and how great it was even back then, season 2 is worth buying because nearly every episode is a classic. Yes, this is from the time when Simpsons Mania was just setting in, and watching this DVD set reminded me just what all the fuss was about. The animation is much prettier than the glitch-ridden first season and already the plots and jokes are getting much better. The extras are what you expect - the comentries are quite insightful, but apart from this there's nothing particularly astounding. Unlike with Season 1, which had but 13 episodes to its name, you get more for your money this time round, the 4 DVDs having in total 22 episodes for you to watch.

This series contains some of my alltime fav episodes including 'Bart gets an F', 'Brother, Where Art Thou' and 'Bart's dog gets an F'.pThis DVD also features other classic episodes such as 'Homer vs Lisa' and the 1st 'Treehouse of Horrors', and how can i forget every other one of the 22 episodes in this set. They're all amazing.pThis is amust have DVD for any comedy fan. It shows the simpsons from a time which most people forgot and it's shame because some of these truely are the greatest episodes ever.

I will start of by saying well done to Matt Groening and the team. It is because of you that my sides are aching all day long, from constant laughter. There are 22 episodes this time round, instead of 12 episodes in season 1. Here they are: br1. "Bart gets an F. Bart is threatened to be held back a grade if his school work does not improve. Great episode this one. 5/5.br2."Simpson and delilah. Fantastic episode! Homer discovers a way to get hair.5/5 br3. "Treehouse of horror." First episode of TOH. Surly needs no explanation.4/5br4. "Two cars in every garage and three eyes on every fish." A three eyed fish is discovered near the nuclear power plant.5/5 br5. Dancin Homer. Homer becomes a football mascot.5/5br6. "Dead putting society." Bart and Todd have a crazy golf contest. Brilliant!5/5br7. "Bart Vs Thanksgiving." Bart manages to ruin Thanksgiving.5/5br8. "Bart the dairdevil." Bart becomes a dairdevil. Superb!. 5/5br9. "ItchyScratchy Marge." Marge is upset with cartoon violance. Aren't we all. NOT.4/5br10. "Bart gets hit by a car." Need no explanation? 4/5br11. "O.F.T.F.B.B.F." Homer eats a dangerous fish and finds out he has a day to live.5/5br12."The way we was." A flashback episode where Homer and Marge tell the rest of the world how they met. EXCELLENT 5/5br13. "Homer Vs Lisa and the 8th commandment." Homer gets illegal cable, much to Lisa's dismay.5/5br14. "Principal charming." Marge tells Homer to find her sister, selma a husband.5/5br15. "Oh brother, where art thou?" Homer discovers a big secret.5/5br16. "Bart's dog gets an F." Santa's little helper is sent obedience school.4/5br17. "Old monney." Grandpa falls in love. AHHHH!5/5br18. "Brush with greatness." Homer goes on a diet. Meanwhile Marge paints a picture of MR Burns. Bravo, Bravo!5/5br19. "Lisa's subsitute." Lisa falls in love with her subsitute teacher. One of my favourites.5/5br20. "The war of the Simpsons." The Simpsons throw a dinner party. 5/5br21. "Three men and a comic book." Bart, Martin and Milhouse buy a 100 dollar comic book.5/5br22. "Blood fued." Bart gives MR Burns blood.5/5br brWell that's all of them. Amongst all these episodes there are loads of extras including Interveiws and adverts. And the Simpson team give there own cometry for each episodes. This is pretty much the best thing to come out of the Simpsons ever. You get way more for your monney, and you can never get bored of it. Simply brilliant.
