| Customer Reviews: Bargain Basement Diamond June 17, 2004 TerraceGaz (Leeds, England) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I wasn't expecting too much from this film when I originally bought it on two counts, firstly was the bargain basement price and secondly I thought the film would be over-sentimental given the tragedy surrounding the Challenger disaster and the sad loss of seven fine Astronauts. I couldn't have been more wrong, the film is very interestingly structured to illustrate the human aspect of such an awesome endeavour with the movie particularly focusing on the teacher in space candidate Christa McCauliffe, but in no way forgetting her skilled and dedicated fellow Astronauts. For persons looking deeper into why this tragedy actually occurred, the thankless work covered by Roger Boisjoly who warned NASA of impending doom if they continued to launch shuttles in extremely cold weather is here, as is the fateful telephone conference between Morton Thiokol (Solid Rocket Booster manufacturers) and the various NASA agencies on the night before the launch, having read on the subject before, it certainly does not paint a rosy picture of NASA protocols with regard to go/no go decisions on space flights pre-Challenger. This is a great film for space buff or entertainment enthusiast alike and at this price I highly recommend it. TG
A fitting tribute to the members of the Challenger Crew May 5, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Challenger might appear to be a low budget documentry on the Challenger space shuttle disaster but it is so much for than that.pChallenger looks at the lives of the crew members before the launch of the doomed misson. It portrays the nomination of Christa McAuliffe, who was selected from thousands of applicants to be the first civilian in space.pThe film focuses on the people involved in the mission rather than the technicalities of the shuttle explosion. It is sensitive towards those who lost their lives in the name of space exploration. The end sequence is nicely done and makes you respect the passengers of the shuttle, rather than showing the shuttle explode the film ends of a high note of the crew anticipating their time in space.pThe DVD has no special features apart from scene selection, but for the price you are getting a brilliant movie!
