Amazon.co.uk Review This strange, 1985 experiment by Ridley Scott (IBlade Runner/I) starred the up-and-coming Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale world of dwarfs and unicorns and demons. After the horn of a unicorn is broken, darkness and winter descend upon the world. Cruise's character, helped along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (IThe Tin Drum/I), descends into hell to save paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating. A mixed experience all around that makes one wish it had been more successful. I--Tom Keogh/I

One of the best Fantasy films ever! January 13, 2003 A. J. Watson (Newcastle-on-Tyne, UK) 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
May I suggest that 'surround sound' is turned off???brAs all the other reviewers seem to be concentrating on the presentation and not the content of the film, here's my twopence worth. pDefinitely not a kid's film, this is a dark, sensual adult film of the age-old theme of the devil wanting darkness to take over the world - requiring the services of a virgin and a unicorn. The visual effects and photography are just brilliant, given the era this was made in - you can see Ridley Scott's influence and imagery in the latest Lord of the Rings films. pThe acting is superb; bryoung Tom Cruise (as Jack) brings off the young lad charged with the task of rescuing the Princess and destroying Darkness with a grace and style that belong to a veteran; brTim Curry is in his best-ever role here, (even better than Frankenfurter!); the stifled undercurrent of rage is barely held in check as he woos the slightly-willing princess; one is almost convinced by him as he declares his philosophy and aims - "No Good without Evil; no Love without Hate; no Innocence without Lust..." in that rich chocolatey voice; and his laughter and dismissive tone as 'the BOYY!' Jack confronts him sends shivers down one's spine;brand Mia Sara (whatever happened to her?) is both innocence and seduction, and believable in both roles, but her forceful rejection of the Lord of Darkness is as powerful a piece of acting as you will ever get.pAltogether a classic of film-making - seeing it again after several years makes one realise what a masterpiece this is!brUnreservedly recommended. *****
Bring Back Tangerine Dream Soundtrack!! April 14, 2007 Ms. A. M. Mitchell 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I have to agree with the other reviews. This is a fantastic film, but to me what made it as a child was the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. I was SOOO disappointed when I bought the DVD and found that the soundtrack was different. I have been holding out for a couple of years for the other version but so far no luck. The film is defintely still worth watching, but I much prefer the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. I guess we'll just have to keep on waiting!!!
Not the Tangerine Dream soundtrack! March 20, 2002 19 out of 22 found this review helpful
I've been waiting a long time for this film to turn up on DVD, largely because of the TD soundtrack. It's not that version, but has the alternative Jerry Goldsmith score.brActually, it's a fine score, and the film gets more of my attention now, since I'm not distracted so much by the music.brIt's a good film, and has the 'trademark' Ridley Scott cinematography - very spectacular and atmospheric. A good picture transfer too.brI expect a UK special edition will come out someday, with both versions (US/European) of the film and score. The US special addition DVD has this, and the sound is in Dolby 5.1 format, instead of this version's 2.0.
Forgotten masterpiece March 25, 2002 29 out of 35 found this review helpful
This film has fallen into obscurity, largely because of the awful U.S. cut, a butchered and dumbed down travesty. Worst of all, the soundtrack, a beautiful orchestral score by Jerry Goldsmith (Planet of the Apes, The Omen, Alien, LA Confidential), was replaced with some embarrassingly dated synth-pop trash. It was a critical and commercial disaster. pThe same was not true in the rest of the world. This (the european) version of the filmbrretains the original soundtrack and is far closer to the directors cut. pThe sets, special effects, make up, and costumes are fantastic, the look of the film is so timeless and otherworldly that it could honestly have been made yesterday. The cast is perfect and all give great performances. pThe DVD extras are pretty limited, little more than a trailer, but as fantasy films go this is second only to Lord of the Rings.
Love it even more after 16 years...! May 17, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I first saw this movie on tv over 16 years ago and fell in love with it. And even still, at age 20, it is my favourite movie. I believe I am this movie's biggest fan and critic. I have 7 veriated versions of this movie, and have easily seen Legend close to 4000 times (no, it's not a sickness, it just spoke to me in different ways everytime i saw/see it).brIt's still so sad that the dance scene had not been rightfully placed back into the movie after all these years.brIf it had been, then the movie would finally be complete.brThere are so many funny little changes in each version; between misplaced lines, scene sequences, dubs, etc... There's no wonder why I just keep watching it.brI still haven't fulfilled my goal of taking every extra little bit and piece that all the movies have and lack and create my own version with every single line and scene possible to match the complete script as closely as possible.brSounds disturbing, but if ridley can't do it, I will!brThey say a great book can be identified when it entices you just as much/or even more after you read it as a child, adult, and grow old.brThat's precisely how I view Legend.br;) CHEERS!
