Amazon.co.uk Review
This film springs from a long-neglected script by the late John Cassavetes. The script was directed by his son Nick and stars Sean Penn, who was set to star before the elder Cassavetes died. Penn plays Eddie, an alcoholic ne'er-do-well who loves his young wife Maureen (Robin Wright Penn) too much. When she is brutalised by a neighbour, Eddie goes nuts--and lands in a mental hospital for 10 years. When he is freed, he finds Maureen remarried to contractor Joey (John Travolta), with whom she has two children. But Eddie's love is too strong not to draw him back to her and make one final plea for her affection. A great showcase for all of the actors involved (the cast includes James Gandolfini, Harry Dean Stanton and Gena Rowlands), with a particularly fine performance by Sean Penn. The film has the make-it-up-as-you-go feeling of John Cassavetes's work, as well as the kind of naked emotions that were his hallmark.I--Marshall Fine/I

4 out of 5 stars one of the most peculiar films i've ever seen   July 5, 2004

This film delivered nothing I expected, but astounded me from start to finish. It manages to be a love story, a drama and a comedy, without falling prey to any of the cliches that usually haunt each genre. As the wild, drink-addled husband and wife, Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn's chemistry is, given the couple's individual acting talents and their marriage, unsurprisingly superb, but in fact there isn't a dud performance in the film at all. John Travolta is wonderful as Wright Penn's bemused and enraged second husband, the part of the 9-year-old eldest daughter is played with impressive sophistication, and the script serves them all well; Sean Penn, known for his dark roles, shows his comic edge and is by turns sharp, pathetic and hysterically funny, offset beautifully by the manic, chainsmoking Wright Penn. Towards the end of the film [don't worry, no spoilers] the story feels a little disjointed, until the film ends and you realise that it was all played out perfectly; volatile, human and refreshingly uncliched from start to finish, She's So Lovely is unpredictable and engaging, and it's a mystery to me that this film isn't better known and better appreciated. Seriously well worth purchasing.

Not what the hard core Sean Penn fan expects. Alcohol, small crimes and a twisted love triangle link John Travolta, Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn in this sweet and sour comedy/drama. brAll the performances are as such credible names would have you expect, but it moves a bit slowly in parts. brIn short, a low life couple are split up when Sean Penn goes to jail, and she (Robin Wright Penn) gets on with life and ends up remarried. But when he is released, slighty chilled and slightly nuts, her new life is threatened by the return of what us true romantics would term her one true love.brI'd think carefully about purchasing this if you haven't already seen it and loved it.
