4 out of 5 stars THE PROVERBIAL MOTHER/DAUGHTER-LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP...   January 2, 2003
Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle)

This film deals with a theme with which almost all mothers of teenage daughters are familiar. This is a coming of age story which sees Natalie Thompson play the teenage daughter of a loud, flighty, impractical dreamer, wonderfully portrayed by Susan Sarandon. pSarandon is on her second marriage, living in Wisconsin with her teenage daughter. She is bored by her nice, dull, skating instructor, second husband. She is tired of living among her complacent, middle class relatives. She dreams of riches, stardom for her daughter, and a more exciting life. She has dreams, big ones, but really lacks the wherewithal to make them happen.pHer daughter is a bit of a mouse, who likes all that Sarandon seems to abhor. She likes Wisconsin, her family, and what she views as relative normalcy. Unlike her mother, she does not feel called upon to explore new horizons. Naturally, given the divergence of their dreams, they inevitably clash, and the daughter, given her youth, must go where her mother decides to wander. Here, it turns out to be Beverly Hills, the land of milk and honey, or so Sarandon thinks. pWhile living on the fringes in Beverly Hills, Sarandon sees that her daughter attends a good school. Yet, they live like vagabonds, moving from apartment to apartment as the rent becomes due and cannot be paid, and the lights are turned off for non-payment of bills. The mother, a holly go lightly, wants to live well and meet the exciting man of her dreams who will enable her to live out her fantasy life. She is, at times, desperately pathetic, looking for love in all the wrong places. Her daughter, while responsible and a good student, can be an insufferable little prig who, when the chips are down, however, remains loyal to her errant mother. pTheir differences in style cause them to clash and misunderstand each other with resultant angst over the years. As time goes on, their life does seem to stabilize. It is not until the daughter is ready for college, however, that Sarandon fully realizes that her dreams are not necessarily those of her daughter. It is then, that they both realize just how much each loves the other, as Sarandon finally steps up to home plate. This is an enjoyable mother/daughter flick.

4 out of 5 stars Anywhere But L.A.!   August 20, 2003

I really liked 'Anywhere But Here,'it was enjoyable and funny. Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman who are two great actresses of their respective generations make a wonderful team as mother and daughter in this film as they trade the security of their small -town life in Wisconsin for the unkwown bright lights of city life in L.A.I've always admired Ms Sarandon as an actress and after seeing her play so many intense and dramatic roles on screen it was quite a change to see her playing a whimsical and far from practical mother who needs the hand of her steady, reliable and serious daughter to help guide her through life and it's realities at times.br'Anywhere But Here,'is a great comedy/drama about mothers and daughters, big city life vs small town life and about how life is constantly one big voyage of discovery.A wonderful film, see it!

4 out of 5 stars Anywhere but here- Review   June 19, 2002

I first saw the adverts for this film when watching 'A Midsummer night's dream' on video. It looks interesting but not overly wonderful. A few weeks later, I found it in my local video shop and got it out, then watching in as many times as I could that weekend.brThe tale of Adele and Anne is compelling and sometimes a bit of a tear jerker. In many ways Adele (the mother) is more like the child of the relationship, she is almost always optimistic. And yet when Adele gets depressed, she goes into shut-down mode and is unable to go on with life.brAnne, her daughter, yearns for the life of a normal teenager. She is very often annoyed with her mother for dragging her away from her family and friends back in Kansas. She does not want to become a movie star- an ambition of her mother's. Yet Anne realises that without her vibrant mother, her own life would be a lot less exciting. She also realises in the course of the film that Adele really does care about her- examples of this are where Adele sells her beloved Mercedes so that Anne may go to College on the East coast and also where Anne herself contacts her father only to find that he doesn't want to know her. Anne's character is also the one of the finalist- when something has happened it has happened, and there is no way to change that and so she accepts it. brAnywhere but Here is a great night in movie. Though is more of a girls' film that a guys.

4 out of 5 stars A Film To Relate To!   October 17, 2004

I think that one of the main reasons that this film is quite popular is that most people can actually relate to the things that happen in it. Most teenagers will have found their parents irritating or annoying at some point and visa versa, and some people may even have a mother like this.pAdele August is a divorced mother of one living in Wisconsin who is bord of her plain old lifestyle, her skating instructor boyfriend, her middle class relatives, and her boring job. She dreams of riches, stardom and a better life for her daughter Ann, who on the other hand is completely the opposite, liking her plain, simple life, her friends and relatives, and her school. pOne day, Adele decides to drop sticks, leave her family, friends, job, boyfriend etc and take her daughter to LA for a more interesting life. Living on the outskirts of Beverly Hills tries to give her daughter a good life, making her attend the best school etc, however they live in horrible dingy appartments where theres no heating and the lights don't work because they can't pay the bills. pEventually Ann grows up and becomes old enough to leave her mother, somthing that she has been dieing to do for years. She picks a college and despite her mothers protests, she goes, but not without a tearful good bye at the airport. While you can see that Adele is only trying to get her daughter a better way of life, and that Ann is very ungrateful, you can see that she can be a pain at times.pSusan Sarandon is brilliant in her role as Adele August the mother of Ann who drags her daughter off to a new world. Natalie Portman is also very good as Ann August, who is dragged off by her mother for a more interesting life. Both of them have a good on-screen chemistry ad work well together. In fact, Susan Sarandon informed the movie's producers that she would not be interested in the project if Natalie Portman was not cast as her daughter. pOverall, 'Anywhere But Here' is a really good 'coming of age' film that most people will enjoy, especially teenages and mums whom some of this may seem familiar. Great acting troughout, and should please most movie fans. DVD also includes an original theatrical trailer.

Im kinda in the middle with this film, its very long and slow and there not reli a storyline, it finishes in rather an odd place and theres no great action. But then again it was an interesting watch, and something to relate too. br /The actors are great in the film, its just a shame about the lack of humour, storyline and action! br /Overall its something to watch on your own on a rainy day!! br /
