Amazon.co.uk Review
Directed with a cool remove by Dominic Sena, IKalifornia/I falls somewhere between IBadlands/I and INatural Born Killers/I. David Duchovny is a blocked author with a fascination for outlaw killers who hatches a plan to road trip through America's mass-murder landmarks to finish his book. He enlists the help of his frustrated photographer girlfriend Michelle Forbes, who desperately wants to leave the East Coast for LA, and they advertise for riding partners. Luckily for them, they wind up with a veteran killer, the greasy trailer-park ex-con Brad Pitt, who decides to skip parole with his cowering child-woman girlfriend Juliette Lewis. Duchovny is enamoured by gun-toting Pitt's recklessness and lawless disregard for, well, everything--simultaneously terrified and thrilled by Pitt's brutal beating of a barfly. Meanwhile, Pitt's leaving a trail of corpses in their wake.p Pitt brings a ferocious magnetism to his part, but it's still hard to buy genial Duchovny's odd attraction; Juliette Lewis conveys a terrifying sense of victimization with her poor dumb creature. Despite the film's best efforts, it never really plumbs the psyche of Pitt's simmering psycho--he's just plain bad, you know--but it does fashion an effective little thriller out of the tensions brewing in the restless quartet. --ISean Axmaker, Amazon.com/I

5 out of 5 stars A much overlooked film...   March 21, 2004

This is a taut thriller which revolves around a road trip to California. pDuchovny and Forbes want to travel across the US to California stopping at famous murder sites along the way - they're planning a book; he's writing the words and she's taking the pictures. To help finance the trip they advertise for someone to share driving and split gas money - they get the more than slightly psychotic Pitt and his childlike girlfriend Lewis. As they make their way across the country trying to make sense of violent murders by visiting where they took place, they are unaware that they have their own serial killer in the back seat.pThere are some genuinely tense moments. The central performances are very good - Pitt is almost unrecogniseable and although Duchovny's character looks and, for the most part, sounds exactly like Fox Mulder, his initial fascination and eventual disgust with violence is well played out. pThis is a very violent film but if you like thrillers and don't mind a bit of gore and bad language then you should enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Another CLASS performace from the ever-adaptable Brad Pitt!   September 18, 2002

Brad Pitt plays an extremely believable trailor-trash red-neck serial killer, combined with the endearing qulities of his support Adele (Juliette Lewis) makes this film one of my faves.pI remember that watching this film sparked off my interest of Pitt as a credible actor. I have since watched all of his films, and I now consider him to be one of my fave male actors of modern cinema.pA good performance from all four lead roles, combined with good directing and nice cinematography make this a...brTOP FILM... MUST WATCH...

5 out of 5 stars A Jack-In-The-Box Weepy   October 16, 2005

The sense of foreboding, right from the beginning, is almost tangible... a straight couple on a road trip with a serious mission unwittingly pick up a 'white trash' couple, with a hideous secret as baggage, to help pay for the trip. Without a doubt the star of this film is Juliette Lewis as Adele, the ill-treated girlfriend in denial of the creeping evil that is unfolding before her. There is some expectation of greatness from Brad Pitt as the murderous lead, but Lewis gets under the skin in a much more absorbing and emotional way - and she also gets the last, rather unexpected, line... Please don't forget the tissues, this is a jack-in-the-box weepy.pA fabulous film that shows just what a talented director can do with a well-chosen cast, a great script, and a simple plot line.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Film   March 8, 2000

Every actor/actress in this film performs at the peak of their abilities in this quirky road movie set around the killing of one of the 4 strong team of passengers going across state. Unsung hero is... David (X files) Duchovny. But I particularly like the evil character (Early) played by the star - Brad Pitt.

5 out of 5 stars A mad outstanding performance by Brad Pitt, class!   June 11, 2000

This film has it's own kind of humour in a way which I find.......funny. He looks like a scary hobo (Pitt) but, sod it, just watch it yourself!
