Quite a surprise - a bloody good movie March 7, 2005 Klaus van Amelrode 34 out of 35 found this review helpful
I was browsing through this pile of DVDs, already a bit bored by it when I suddenly saw the DVD "Riding In Cars With Boys". I more or less look at it a bit closer because I thought the title to be odd and I was surprised to see that Drew Barrymore was staring. Not extremely convinced I bought nevertheless. When it started I first well I supected it not to be good and here it is. But VERY quickly I became absolutely hooked and was utterly taken by it all. It is just fantastic to see the story to unreveal. In one of the previous reviews it was said that the movie is underrated and I suppose that is true. I have never ever heart about before. And Drew Barrymore's performance is just excellent.pEnjoy it!!
An Enchanting True Life Tale June 18, 2002 Paul Arkless (Leicester, United Kingdom) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Drew Barrymore stars in this witty yet heartbreaking story as Beverly, a girl who goes, well, Riding in Cars with Boys. The story chronicles her life from the age of 15 up to 35 and excellently portrays young Beverly's heartache at falling pregnant and being railroaded into marriage to a lovable junkie (Steve Zahn) by her father. As opportunities seem to always fall through or pass her by, Beverly sees no-one else to blame but her unwanted son, who grows up to despise his mother (played by Adam Garcia).pThis film sounds a little wishy-washy, but is in fact both interesting and at times very touching. Barrymore is excellent, especially as a young misguided teen who happens to make one wrong decision that changes her life. As the 35 year old, she is a little less believable, but still seems to have the strong and forceful personality that only a mother can have. Zahn is superb as the useless but lovable rogue and Garcia plays the role of disgruntled son well too, despite the fact he is a year older than Barrymore in real life!pHats off to director Penny Marshall who gives the film a fast paced feel, even when the story seems to be going nowhere. It is difficult to make comparisons to any other films, but in some ways it is similar to Erin Brockovich, both of them being based on true stories about struggling women.pI would most definitely recommend this title, it is thoroughly enjoyable and worth a look.
totally under rated movie - a must watch! January 8, 2004 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
i really liked this movie - c'mon what's there NOT to like? after having a marathon of about 16 movies, this is the movie i've enjoyed -the- most. pdrew barrymore stars as a very, very bright young girl (beverly) whose life gets thrown off track by getting pregnant at 15. it's told in retrospect but without the typical "this is the story of my life..." kind of take. beverly takes on marriage and having a child whilst trying to fulfill her dream of going to college. but the movie not only shows her wants, needs, dreams, frustration, it also shows how all this moulds her son's life. pi would say what makes this an excellent film is the plot. of course top notch acting by barrymore and co-stars help tons! based on a true story, the plot is flawless. what makes the story so riveting is that she was such an intelligent and ambitious woman. she knew what she wanted and how to get it but circumstance and emotional imaturity foiled her plans. a completely and totally excellent film!!
Great film with a valuable message June 8, 2009 Peter Buckley (Dyfed, Wales) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This film, based on the true story of Bev Donofrio, is no mere 'chic flic'. Touching and funny, we found ourselves involved with the characters and the problems they faced, including Bev's teenage pregnancy, and subsequently bringing up her son, often alone, Ray the hopeless husband, and Faye, best friend but seen as a bad influence. A credit to Bev and son, Jason for perseverence in the face of hopelessness. At one point she explains, 'I still haven't accepted that this is my life. And I just wish that I could be dumb. And then I wouldn't know better and I could be happy and stop hoping..' She didn't, but neither did Jason, who helps any child who grew up in a difficult environment, trying to make sense of it, sometimes feeling like the parent, and being the soundingboard for all that emotion that only adults should share.
Excellent...Drew Barrymore at her best!!! June 18, 2002 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this film. Drew Barrymore has never been better, playing a teenager who goes riding in cars with boys and ends up pregnant. A funny but touching film about adolecent life and everything that goes with it. One of the best films I have seen in a long time.
