Amazon.co.uk Review IFour Rooms/I is an unbearable quartet of stories written and directed by hot filmmakers Quentin Tarantino (IPulp Fiction/I), Robert Rodriguez (IEl Mariachi/I), Allison Anders (IGas Food Lodging/I), and Alexandre Rockwell (IIn the Soup/I), which only proves that even the smart guys can really blow it sometimes. The anthology is linked by the hotel in which all the events are taking place, and by Tim Roth as a bellboy flitting from scene to scene. Nobody overcomes the insufferable air of self-congratulation that permeates this exercise in forced hipness. Others involved include Bruce Willis, Madonna, Lili Taylor, Ione Skye, Jennifer Beals, and Antonio Banderas.--ITom Keogh, Amazon.com/I

What can I say... July 23, 2002 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
This film is one of my all time favourites...It has so many classic one liners and characters as to make it a great film! It flows nicely from one story to the next and the quality of acting and casting is amazing. Just look at the cast list and beleive me when I say that everyone of them delivers outstanding performances. Tim Roth is blindin as usual, playing a bell hop who just cant have a quiet night. There are so many laughs that you'll be glad you bought it and wish they had made a sequel!brThe last story has the best ending I have seen and is classic Tarantino directing. Sharp, fast and a with a truly classic moment!
open your mind, if you have one July 17, 2006 J. Gildersleeve (Cambridge, England) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
To appreciate this film you have to enjoy surrealism, sarcasm, acid-infused abstract ideas and eccentricity.
br /This film is great if you can see yourself enjoying an experimental concept/ideas (and your not brain dead/ IQ less than 20)
br /Few of the actors are without talent and the directing, although changeable (as there are 4) carries these characters, stories and performances with strength and style.
br /I am never encouraged to reveal the plot of films within a review just to convey my perception of it.
br /I thoroughly enjoyed this film, it is not often you get a chance to watch a combination of actors that are so well known for their quality of performance, throwing themselves into such a bizarre film so well. A testement to the fact that actors, directors, producers etc are all very creative people, it is mainly the people who watch and buy films who want specific plot twists, lead characters to fall in love at the end, or in this case a generic, stencil-like performance by Bruce Willis, Madonna, Amanda DeCadenet, Time Roth etc
br /They wanted to do a bizarre film and they did it extremely well.
br /I highly recommend this film as one to watch with lots of people, maybe getting intoxicated in some way and to be in a relaxed humourous state of mind :) enjoy :)
A landmark in modern film making... April 10, 2005 Shkandrij 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
Un-recognised by most film enthusiasts, this film is truly beautiful. It's unlike any other film that has been made; 4 directors, 4 stories, four rooms in the same hotel, 1 bellhop boy in for the time of his life! the first story is the least enjoyable. I give it 6/10. Thne second story is better, not truly brilliant but funny and wacky! I give it 7/10. The third story which is directed by Robert Rodrequez is one of the best, funny, original and very enjoyable! I think it deserves 9/10! The last one is by Quentin Tarantino, and my personal favourite! It's a typical Tarantino script, with him taking the lead role in this story. It has to have 10/10! The bellhop boy (Tim Roth) is great, and stars in every scene! The whole film is set either in the rooms of the hotel or in the corridors, lifts or main office. pDon't listen to the reviewers who hate this. They arn't true film fans and therfore don't recognise a great film when they see one. You have to buy this.pA totally under-rated landmark of modern cinema.
All Time Favorite September 1, 2002 Jason (Woking, Surrey United Kingdom) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
This film has to be one of the funniest I have ever seen. Cleverly put together, and with a brilliant twist. I have never found this film in any video store, which amazes me. I think this is one of Tarantinos best ever!
Reservoir Dogs meets Desperado in a hotel March 9, 2000 lexington55@hotmail.com (United Kingdom) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
Quentin Tarantino followed up the huge success of Pulp Fiction with this ensemble piece, that showcases the directing talents of fellow indie favourites, Robert Rodriguez, Alexandre Rockwell, Allison Anders, not to mention a star turn by Qunetin himself. The premise is simple, one hotel, one bellboy (Tim Roth doing his best Michael Caine impressions) and one hell of a New Year's Eve. Each director takes a section of the film and Roth manically dashs from one 'screw-ball' scenario to another. From Madonna and her coven of witches, to Antonio Banderas' trouble making kids, through to the grand finale where Quentin and Bruce Willis are stretched to their acting threshholds as hotshot young director and movie superstar respectively. As a film it is limited, but as four examples of indie film making, tied to together by lunatic performance from Tim Roth it makes for enjoyable viewing. Steve Buscemi was originally cast as the bellboy, but due to his turn as a bellboy in Barton Fink he turned down the chance and allowed Roth to take centre stage. Horribly under rated this is one for the fans and those that enjoy bizarre movies with no apparent purpose or plot.
