Amazon.co.uk Review
IBully/I, the third feature film from photographer-turned-director Larry Clark, follows the pattern laid down by his debut movie IKids/I: deploring the amoral fecklessness of today's American teens while lingering (some might say gloating) over their naked bodies--or at least, the naked bodies of the better-looking ones. The plot's based on a real-life murder case that took place in Florida in 1994. High school teenagers Bobby Kent and Marty Puccio have been best friends from infancy--or so Bobby insists. But their friendship consists of Bobby bullying and humiliating Marty. Marty's new girlfriend Lisa decides this has to stop--especially after Bobby rapes her and her friend Lisa. Bobby, she announces, must be killed. She ropes in a few friends to help--none of them over-endowed with brains or savvy--and recruits a supposed "Mafia hitman" who's scarcely any older or brighter than the rest of them.p Though there's an air of moral condemnation hanging over the film, Clark avoids any obvious "society's to blame" angles. His killers are from middle-class homes, not noticeably deprived, and their parents (one of them played by Clark himself) are well-meaning if helplessly unaware of what their kids are up to. Maybe the rap music on the soundtrack--such as the Ghetto Inmates' "Thug Ass Bitch"--gives some clue, but essentially Clark seems to be suggesting that these kids are morally bankrupt because that's just how they are these days. IBully/I is well shot and well acted, and there's a dark humour to be savoured--especially in the farcically inept murder scene--but in the long run it's a dispiriting experience. --IPhilip Kemp/I

5 out of 5 stars Sex and violence   September 4, 2002

This was a little known film, only released in selected cinemas, based on a True story about several Florida teenagers who plot to murder a violent Bully.pThe film involves many sexual scenes, including a rape, which have been labelled, by many, as gratuitous. The purpose of these scenes is to depict a level of realism (I am sure their critics can not deny that teenage sex takes place) and is not glamorized in any way (It was noted in certain review that the actors bodies have bruises and cuts), and the consequences, such as unwanted pregnancies are also explored. However Bully is considerably more graphic than 'Kids' (Larry Clark's controversial 1995 picture)pThe camera work is excellent (except for one nauseating scene where the camera is constantly spinning) and an atmosphere is maintained throughout the entire film.pThese little known actors (at the time of filming) perform exceptionally well and I am sure they will go on to greater things. The Bully (Nick Stahl) will be staring in a major roll (John Connor) in Terminator 3.pThis film must be watched without prejudice to enjoy it to its full extent. If you object to strong language or sex in movies then I do not recommend this movie, but to the rest of us it is a very powerful drama. This film stuck in my memory for days after watching it.pIf you enjoyed this film you may also enjoy 'Kids' (Larry Clark) or 'Requiem for a dream' (Darren Aronofsky)

5 out of 5 stars The joys of Western society...   October 10, 2002

Larry Clark follows up Kids and Another Day in Paradise with Bully, based on Jim Schutze's excellent true crime book (In Cold Blood for MTV retards?). The story is about a loose gang of Floridan youths (some of whom had never met) and their murder of an individual who bullied (and worse)them. pClark often comes in for criticism for his exploitative tone, I don't know why as the shot between Bijou Phillip's thighs is less distinct than that in Basic Instinct (and the nudity/sex is rendered unappealing by the violence that surrounds it- much like the book of American Psycho). pClark updates the source material, tying it to the world of gangsta rap - notably 2 Live Crew, Cypress Hill and Eminem. The latter of whom is not far from Nick Stahl's bully character- contrast the homosexual references in Stan and Stahl's ambiguous rape of either Miner of Renfro's characters (or both, it fades out). These characters are in a world we recognise- suburbia; they're desensitised reaction to murder (initially)recalls 1980's classic River's Edge (the later reaction is more Macbeth, with a hint of idiocy). The characters have comfortable lives, a future less certain than their affable parents generation countered by bit-jobs, drugs and places like Pizza Hut. Just killing time, until they kill each other...pThese characters are the product of ennui created by living in luxury, added to this a posturing inflected by gangsta rap- where everyone could be 'for real'. This notion is satirised more in the gun/gang sequence in Swingers ("was he steppin to you, Snoop Dogg?" is said to a white guy who pulls a piece). Fitzpatrick is found out to have not been real (he got a tattoo instead), though by then he has crossed into the reality of murder. These people have been brutalised (mostly morally, physically also and no one seems to care, e.g. parents) in our consumer society- unlike Fight Club which reacts to this malady with self-destruction, here they annhilate another.pThe camera work is excellent, at one point it rotates from figure to figure so fast you will feel like vomiting (best motion shot since the Jack Rabbit Slim's sequence in Pulp Fiction). The editing is as great as in Requiem for a Dream, Three Kings and Traffic; while the soundtrack of Dre, Eminem, Tricky is equally fine. pMost impressive is the acting, which appears to be an American take on the realism found in films such as Baise Moi and The Idiots. Michael Pitt (Dawson's Creek) and Bijou Phillips (Black White) stand out here, along with leads Rachel Miner and Brad Renfro. Stahl is venal, which is surprising for those who have seen him in In the Bedroom. pBully does have a moral core, making it closer to A Short Film About Killing than a film like Bad Boy Bubby . This is a film, like Christiane F or Kids that parents ought to watch with their kids; this film does reflect on actual events and the pathology of today's youth. Other works related include American History X, Dreiser's An American Tragedy, Wright's Native Son and Buchner's Woyzeck. Maybe Pixote also...The cameo from Jamie Lee Curtis was good (whoever played her daugter ought to be commended), Fitzpatrick is as good as in Storytelling and nice to see Clark himself (as topless as his cast).pAlong with the equally bleak Monster's Ball, Bully is one of the finest pieces of cinema this year (see also Heaven and Pollock). This is the grey area, come and stare into it....

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Harsh reality   September 8, 2002

I bought this film on region one due to the fact that I feel that any Larry Clark film is a must-watch. pThis Film is amazingly well done, it has a little bit of everything you want, If you have seen Kids a previous Clark film then you will recognise many familiarities. Not least of which is the reappearence of Leo Fitzpatrick (tully) in another Role. The cast is the stars of the future, Bijou Phillips, Rachel Miner, Brad Renfro (sleepers), Nick Stahl (Disturbing Behaviour), Yes there is gratioutous sex, yes this tale is disturbing, yes this film is in your face and does not pull and punches but yes it is amazing.pThe tale centres around drugs, sex, bullying and revenge. We are talking small town, small minds and messed up values, all these things help make this film amazing. Nick Stahl is amazing as his character and has further cemented his future as a big star. pI would suggest that you buy this film because it has every aspect you could want from a film, im 18 i loved it, my friends loved it, you will love it.pThen film is again well shot and well acted, Larry clark has a talent of being able to make you fell the reality and this is no different by the end of the film you wont know who is in the right, who to feel sorry for and you will be screaming at the telly for the actions of Rachel Miners character. I suggest lots of mates a dark room and a late night watching kids then this, perfection.pThe basics of the plot are, you see a character being bullied, theres rape and violence and all the bad things, the bullied person becomes sick of it all and aided by his stoner friends and strange girlfriend they begin to plot their revenge, if you want to know what happens....buy it!
