Amazon.co.uk Review
The significance of IEd Wood/I, both man and movie, on the career of Tim Burton cannot be emphasised enough. Here Burton regurgitates and pays homage to the influences of his youth, just as he would continue to do with IMars Attacks!/I and ISleepy Hollow/I. Everything is just right, from the decision to shoot in black and white, the performances of Johnny Depp (as Ed) and Martin Landau (as Bela Lugosi), the re-creation of 1950s Hollywood and the evocative score by Howard (ILord of the Rings/I) Shore. The plot struck a poignant familiar chord with Burton, who saw the relationship between the Ed and Lugosi mirroring his own with Vincent Price. Most importantly Burton responded to the story of the struggling, misunderstood artist. For all Burton's big-budget blockbusters (IBatman/I, IPlanet of the Apes/I), he still somehow retains the mantle of the kooky niche director. And in the mid-90s, this film actually represented the last vestiges of his independent film production. Fans can only hope he'll soon return to those roots soon. p BOn the DVD:/B IEd Wood/I on disc has a good group commentary in which Burton is interviewed rather than expected to hold forth on his own, making his insights alongside the screenwriters, Landau, and various production heads very worthwhile. Also worthy are the featurettes on Landau's Oscar-winning make-up, the FX and the Theremin instrument employed in the score. Best of all is an extremely exotic Music Video based on that score. This doesn't seem to be a new transfer of the film, but in black and white you're less likely to notice. --IPaul Tonks/I

5 out of 5 stars genuine entertainment   July 5, 2004

"Ed Eood" is the true story of Hollywoods worst director, Edward D. Wood Jr. The plot centres around Ed's struggle to make succesful films, films which tell a story. Ed also likes to dress up in women's clothing. As funny as this may sound, Ed's cross dressing is strangely meloncholy. One feels genuinly sorrow for him because no one will accept him for who he is, not even his own wife. Despite poor reviews and his less than supportive wife, Ed remains passionate about his film making and never gives up, something which, at times, brings a tear to the eye. pTim Burton directs the film and yet again he gets it spot on. Burton draws from classic horror films such as the Hammer Horror productions with great effect. The fact that the film is black and white provides moments of extreme noir a la Werner Herzog, while at the same time creating some crisp cinematography. In one particular scene Bela Lugosi casts a long, large shadow across the wall when putting on his cape, beautifully echoing a classic convention used in many a Dracula movie. pEd Wood is funny, sad and heart warming. It's a film which provides genuine entertainment from start to finish. If your looking for something different then you have found it.

5 out of 5 stars impressive and ghoulishly funny, one of Burton's best   March 3, 2008

Tim Burton pulls off an original, sweet-tempered and enjoyable film once again which is one of my favorites among his arsenal. Ignored in life, mocked in death, Edward D. Wood Jr. was a real phenomenon in American cinema history, especially famous for his Z-budget filmmaking. Making a biopic about such a schlocky visionary reputed as the worst director of all-time is just a groovy idea, which only Tim Burton or Coen Brothers dare to do it. br / br /Shot beautifully in moody black white, the film centers on Wood's most "prolific" period, when he relentlessly churned out one movie after the next, from his 1953 beyond-awful debut "Glen or Glenda" to his "groundbreaking" 1959 sci/fi "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Paying a final tribute to this idiosyncratic director, Burton opts to portray Wood and his misfit menagerie in an overexaggeratedly sympathetic way, not to depict the darker side of his life. The film ends before his slide into porn, misery and alcoholism. The film charts Wood's tragi-comic career: his flagrant ineptitude as a writer, producer and director; his efforts to beat the bushes for cash; his indifferent, hyper-enthusiastic and over-optimistic disposition against all kinds of professional and personal setbacks; his sheer passion and child-like naiveté; his transvestite tendencies with a particular taste in fluffy Angora sweaters, blond wigs and high heels; and lastly his strange friendship with 70-year old sepulchral Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi. br / br /The film is hilarious and witty from beginning to end, especially the recreation of certain scenes from Wood's original work (e.g. Lugosi's fight with a flaccid rubber octopus puppet and graveyard scene of "Plan 9 From Outer Space") are hysterically funny. But such a film desperately needs a some degree of gravity. The relationship and chemistry between Wood and Lugosi is the emotional core of the film. Johnny Depp gives a sympathetic and charismatic portrayal of Wood. But, this is Martin Landau who really steals the show, and he is the glue that holds the movie together. His performance is dazzling, conveying the ego, pathos, pride and real dignity of the former horror hero Bela Lugosi. This is the role which won him Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and he really deserved it. br / br /To me, "Ed Wood" shows that life is not merely about success, fame or money; but rather about your creative spirit, and how much you cling to your principles and how much you love what you do. Burton portrays Wood as a winner, because he dared to make films yet he had absolutely no gift when it comes to filmmaking. Today, despite the fact that his films are used as a benchmark that the most awful films are measured by, that's not the problem at all. br / br /The wonderful irony of the film is that it won two Oscars with the name "Ed Wood" written on it :))

5 out of 5 stars What A Wonderful Film!   December 3, 2005

A film about a lousy transvestite director, his oddball friends and a #x27;past it#x27; actor? It would have been so easy to make this into a sarcastic, rude film which simply laughs at the protagonists.pHowever Burton and the cast have made a touching and funny film about an enthusiastic likeable director, his charming friends and an elderly legend. pThe film gives dignity to all concerned. It is beatifully shot, wonderfully acted and has a terrific script. pThe DVD has some great extras, so buy it!

What a great subject for a film. The worlds worst movie maker.Tim Burton totally delivers one of the most entertaining films about Hollywood since the Player. The cast Johnny Depp, Sarah Jessica Parker and the oscar winning Martin Landau will blow you away. The Dvd has some superb extras on it including a making of featurette. The cast looked like they had a lot of fun making this. There are so many memorable scenes but the funniest thing about the film for me is the child like enthusiasm Depp who portrays the not very great man Wood, has for his desperate projects. I had actually sat through Woods biggest disaster Plan 9 From Outer Space. Tim Burton has faithfully recreated many of the scenes to perfection. The tone of the film is not cruel about Wood in any way. Perhaps its best described as passivley affectionate. Certainly one to watch. Johnny Depp has seldom been better.

5 out of 5 stars A delight to watch   December 12, 2003

I was a little apprehensive about this one before I sat down to watch it. It looked a little too oddball at first impressions. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's shot completely in black and white and I thought this would detract from the film but it doesn't. brJohnny Depp is once again fantastic in the leading role.He shows off Edward D.Wood's quirkiness magnificently. There are some real quality moments in this movie. My favourite has got to be the first time you see him in his girlfriends angora sweater! It's such a good film that you almost forget that it's actually based on someone in real life.brDon't be fooled by the seemingly oddness of it,I was very pleasantly surprised.
