Amazon.co.uk Review This giant-man-eating-snake-in-the-jungle thriller definitely scores points as a guilty pleasure, especially with Jon Voight hamming it up as the monster-poacher. He makes life miserable for a team of documentary filmmakers on the Amazon river. iAnaconda/i is one of those movies that exists for no other reason than to give computer animators a chance to strut their stuff with a new digital beastie, and they don't disappoint. It's a lot of fun to watch the mega-snake scarf down its victims and--in the case of Voight--regurgitate him right back up again, all covered in gooey digestive juices. You might wonder why Eric Stoltz, who plays Dr. Steven Cale, showed up for a role that requires him to be off-screen for most of the movie, but hey--when it comes to big snake movies, you might as well put your brain on hold and sitback for the slimy ride. i--Jeff Shannon/i

So bad it's good! January 2, 2007 Mr. E. Balch (Berkshire, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Okay, it's not going to be winning any awards for script writing, plotlines or even CGI effects but as guilty pleasures go, this is right up there! The snake itself its a little over the top to say the least, including the scene when it starts flying vertically upwards out of the water. If you expect nothing from this film and just sit back and prepare to laugh at it's unuintended comic genius, you'll be a happy customer.
Really cool creature feature flick with great actors! April 13, 2009 Mr. Per A. Edwards 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Loved this one for a long time and finally got round to buying it. Still just as brilliant. A group of people set out into the jungle in search of an ancient tribe when they come across Paul Sarone who is obsessed with catching the largest snake in the jungle. The anaconda which turns out to be lethal.
br /The acting in Anaconda is brilliant and the well-known cast shines. J-LO is pretty good as a strong female lead. Eric Stoltz is... well he is unconscious for most of the film but he's good whenever he appears. Jon Voight is particularly good as the villain, Sarone and Ice Cube proves to be very competent. I also enjoyed appearances from Jonathan Hyde and the legendary Owen Wilson in this groovy flick. Sure, the CGI is slightly dated by todays standards but it still stands up as being quite cool and the whole jungle river setting (The team are on a boat) really gives the film a very unique feeling that you only experience when people are in a jungle, sailing down a swampy river on a boat. It reminded me of when they do it in Jurassic Park 2 or 3 or something like that but anywho, the film is very engaging and the quality is very good on this DVD.
br /I would highly recommend getting this as soon as possible. The cast alone warrents at least a rental!
Awesome October 14, 2008 A. Hislop (England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love Anaconda, I understand that it isn't that brilliant a few. However, it is a fun and easy watch, which requires no thinking, with brilliant effects, which are more successful than most films. There is something about animatronics that work much better than cgi and the animatronics in this work beautifully. I also enjoy the flaws (backwards running waterfall) and the drinking game, where you drink every time the snake screams and J.lo pouts! you'll be happily wrecked!
exellent! November 25, 2000 2 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is a classic monster type film, the way the carachters are portrayed is very intresting, although through out the film things can become perplexed. Has 2 b a see film or miss out on the fun. I give this film a 5 star rating
ENTERTAINING MONSTER FILM August 8, 2007 stuart (MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Traveling to the Amazon for a film shoot, Terri Flores, (Jennifer Lopez) and her crew, Danny Rich, (Ice Cube) Warren Westridge, (Jonathan Hyde) Gary Dixon, (Owen Wilson) and Denise Kalberg, (Kari Wuhrer) take Dr. Steven Cale, (Eric Stoltz) for his documentary on a long-lost tribe. Before long, they find a stranger on the river, hunter Paul Sarone, (Jon Voight) who relates tales of losing his crew to a monstrous anaconda. Agreeing to show them the tribe's village as gratitude, they take a shortcut and become stuck on the river. When one of them turns and reveals their true motivation for going, it puts the entire group in danger of being attacked by a monstrous snake.

br /The Good News: One of the few overwhelmingly decent creature features, this has some really good things going for it. The most obvious is that this makes no pretensions of what it's going to be about, and then relishes them for all they're worth. As one long homage to the old creature features of the past, it gives the film a charm that's really missing from the majority of similar films. It plays up the conventions of the past to great effect, giving us plenty of great action scenes. The entire fight at the waterfall, which doesn't just end with the killing of one of the crew, but continues on afterward, is effectively done. The final confrontation in the old mill provides plenty of opportunity for suspense and big action scenes, and as a whole is the film's highlight. It also contains the film's best moment, a point-of-view shot from down the snake's throat as it swallows one of the characters. A really ingenious move and one that offers a little change from the norm. A lot of suspense throughout the film is garnered from the fast movements of the snake and then coiling around victims, which also gives it some spectacle as well. With some moderate jumps and a cool motive for the film, this isn't all that bad.
br /
br /The Bad News: Even with this being decent enough, there's still some things wrong with this one. The big ones deal with the fact that it seems a little like a rip-off of other films. Even though there is some individual moments that aren't out-right adaptations from other films, the whole film plays as a huge wink to the monster films of the past. It's not a bad thing, which is where it gets it's fun spirit from, but it could've played around with the formula a bit and changed it around to give it its own identity. Also, it's pretty hard to find much terror in the snake, as it's always shown with very unconvincing results. The animatronics fare slightly better in realization, since there's no digital sheen the CGI one has, but it's not a huge distance from it either. What makes it all the more discouraging is that the two forms are almost always seen close-after a viewing of real life baby snakes that look so much more like snakes than the one in the film could never hope to match. It's design and coloring look pretty cool, but there's very little else about it that implies realism. There's some other little minor problems here and there, but those aren't that important to the film.
br /
br /The Final Verdict: It could've downplayed some of the homages to the past, but it's still a fun film that features some great action scenes and a cool villain. More probably could've been gotten out of it had the snake looked real, but this is still prime material for all creature feature fans and those that enjoy their films more on the cheesy than serious side.
