Amazon.co.uk Review
Freely adapted from Robert Ludlum's 1980 bestseller, iThe Bourne Identity/i starts fast and never slows down. The twisting plot revs up in Zurich, where amnesiac CIA assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), with no memory of his name, profession, or recent activities, recruits a penniless German traveler (iRun Lola Run's/i Franka Potente) to assist in solving the puzzle of his missing identity. While his CIA superior (Chris Cooper) dispatches assassins to kill Bourne and thus cover up his failed mission, Bourne exercises his lethal training to leave a trail of bodies from Switzerland to Paris. Director Doug Liman (iGo/i) infuses Ludlum's intricate plotting with a maverick's eye for character detail, matching breathtaking action with the humorous, thrill-seeking chemistry of Damon and Potente. Previously made as a 1988 TV movie starring Richard Chamberlain, iThe Bourne Identity/i benefits from the sharp talent of rising stars, offering intelligent, crowd-pleasing excitement from start to finish. --iJeff Shannon/i

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant   April 8, 2005

The Bourne Identity is an excellent, believable action adventure. It is tightly scripted, very well acted, tautly directed and packed with realistic action (including some very good car chases) and genuine tension. I suspect that one of the reasons that I (and others) like this film so much is that I stumbled across it by chance, watched it with no real expectations and was blown away by how good it was.pThe plot is decent with some interesting twists. Jason Bourne is an assassin who fails on a mission, the film begins with him being rescued from the ocean. The rest of the film follows him as he attempts to discover who he is while avoiding the multitude of people trying to kill him.pMatt Damon (much to my surprise) is excellent as the amnesiac Jason Bourne and the supporting cast, particularly Franka Potente, Chris Cooper and Brian Cox, are very good.pExcellent entertainment

5 out of 5 stars the best fight scenes since the matrix   March 1, 2003

The Bourne Identity is a glamorous chase picture with such stunning locales as Paris, Greece and Prague. It's one of those movies where the disgraced hero (Matt Damon as Jason Bourne) is a secret agent before he becomes framed by a sinister CIA operative (Chris Cooper) with a hidden vendetta, thus becoming a target on the run. The constant running keeps this movie fast-paced with a jolt of urgency -- which is crucial to its success because the plot is somewhat convoluted. Putting one's brain on pause is essential when enjoying a movie like this one.

5 out of 5 stars What a Spy Movie is Suppose to Be   January 11, 2003

This is a terrifc movie and is quite faithful to the book in it's overall perspective of the spy world. If every element from Ludlum's greatest novel were left in this would be a five hour movie. The book was that complex and jam-packed.pDirector Doug Liman has retained the basic feel of the book and left the heart of the story in tact. He didn't try to "Glitz it Up" because it had a big budget and a big named actor in Matt Damon, who comes into his own in this film. We see Paris and all the other countries as a background to this dark story we hope can have some kind of happy resolution as the film goes along.pFranke Potente is perfect as a girl who has no real roots herself and what starts as a business proposition of a ride to safety for the cash she so desperately needs ends up in romance, even if it has to be a life on the run. Damon proves he can really act in this film and does a great job as Jason Bourne, a guy who has no idea who he is but has all the instincts of someone not quite part of everyday society.pThere is a scene in Paris where setting down to eat Damon frustatingly asks Marie (Potente), "What kind of guy has a Swiss bank account with a dozen passports in different names and that kind of cash-and a gun?" She tries to offer solice but then he wonders why and how he knows how many cars are on the street outside and their licence numbers, among other things.pThe romance that blossoms between Bourne and Marie becomes one more reason Bourne must find the answers to his identity as international assasins come after them at every turn. There is a moment in the film when he tries to make her leave him for safety because he loves her, and it is for that same reason she stays.pThis is a gritty movie with a heart. The action sequences as Bourne's instincts kick in are terrific and the human elements are not lost along the way which is a credit to Director Liman and the two stars, especially Damon, who can now look behind him at the pack.pWe are left with a good feeling at the end of this film but don't get to comfortable. There were two Bourne books that followed this one. We're not out of danger yet! That's a good thing for us. I can't wait for "The Bourne Supremecy" and maybe that's the best compliment I can pay this film.

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD REMAKE OF A GOOD ORIGINAL!!!!!!!   March 18, 2003

Matt Damon has a lot to live up to in this film, after the original was such a strong impact straight from a novel, but he has done well and plays the part brilliantly.pBeing a spy type of film, it needs to capture the audience from the start and needs to keep them on the edge of their seat`s. The plot is well thought out and keeps going through the entire film.pMatt Damon has been in other films such as Ocean`s Eleven, but his performance in The Bourne Identity has made him stand out, ok it`s not an oscar winning performance, but his acting skills are brilliant, he brings the character to life and plays the part to perfection.pAlso, this film shows just how much fun you can have in a Mini, with a breathtaking high speed chase through the streets of Paris. Not being set in America is what makes this film so good, and the scenes in Zurich and Paris are well filmed and produced. pThe DVD is packed with extra`s that are well worth watching through.pBUY THIS FILM AND ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION TODAY.

5 out of 5 stars Bourne Brilliance!   February 4, 2005

Fished from the sea with two bullets in his back and suffering amnesia, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is lucky to e alive. However he doesn't know who he is or how he could have possibly come to be on a fishing trawler in the middle of the ocean, he must find out.pBit by bit small pieces of his past begin to emerge, he has skills and abilities that sometimes reveal themselves in a reflex (eg, when he is attacked) but he does not know why this is. After tracing a bank account, which was hidden in a small device beneath his skin, he finds that he is Jason Bourne residing in Paris, France and for some reason is the holder of various passports and identities.pMeanwhile the CIA in Langley are aware that Bourne is on the lose, and are anxious to tie up all lose ends by whatever means necessary. Every moment longer he lives he jeopardises the very program he was trained to serve.pJason is not alone in his quest and is aided by an unsuspecting, cute, German national with visa problems who gets swept along after agreeing to take Jason from Zurich to Paris for $20,000.pJason must get to the bottom of his identity, his life depends on it, but it wont be easy, he has a few clues, but everywhere he turns people are after him, and he doesn't know why. He has many questions and must face a formidable enemy who is determined to silence him.pI loved this film, right from the very start the story began to unfold and gathered pace as the film went on. I thought the characters were great and the story compelling and gripping. Time flies with this movie as u follow it like a roller coaster twisting and turning all the way to the end. There are some amazing action scenes and a solid plot to this movie, and I feel it's well worth seeing. I'm definitely a big fan
