Amazon.co.uk Review
Some movies are so stupid that they are depressing to watch: I40 Days and 40 Nights/I is one of them. Almost nothing here even remotely resembles genuine human behaviour. Matt (Josh Hartnett) is brutally dumped by his knockout ex-girlfriend, and as a result is so torn-up inside that he vows to give up sexual activity--including masturbation--for Lent. His friends and coworkers start betting on how soon he'll crack. Their scepticism is fuelled when Matt meets Erica (Shannyn Sossamon) at a laundrette. They're immediately smitten with each other, but Matt struggles to stay true to his vow, even though it threatens to founder his potential relationship with Erica. Based on this description, you might think that I40 Days and 40 Nights/I is a religious educational video, however, the barrage of sex gags and frequent nudity will quickly dispel this notion. --IBret Fetzer/I

5 out of 5 stars 40 days and 40 nights   October 17, 2002

Josh Hartnett returns in another great comedy as Matt Sullivan. From the makers of "Bridget Jone's Diary" Brings you "40 days and 40 nights". brImagine giving up sex and everything sexual, and falling in love on the same day. But if that isn't bad enough, also imagine your best friend and all your work colleagues having a bet on which day you will have sex with someone. As if that wasn't bad enough, it gets spread all over the internet, and bid come in as high as $3,000, and evryone he knows tries to do everything within there power to make him fail. brIt all started when Matt's last big relationship, ended in disaster, and ever since his hearts been aching and his commitment in relationships has been lacking.brThen along comes lent, so Matt decides to do the unthinkable, and go where no man has ever gone before and give up everything sexual for lent (40 Days And 40 Nights).brBut does he make it or not?, that is something you will have to find out yourself.

From the producers of About a Boy comes this comedy,Star of Pearl Harbour Josh Harnett plays Matt Matt Sullivan who finds out that his ex Girlfriend is engaged to be married. Matt has sex and lots of it to try and forget but it doesn't help him at all. So Matt does something that no man has even thought of doing.... No sex for Lent!(40days 40nights)but not just sex, No Kissing, No Nibbling, No Touching! No Mastubation!brBut Matt gives up at the wrong time as he falls in love with Erica, actress Shannyn Sossamon Star of a Knights Tale. brTo make things worse His Flatmate Ryan finds out and tells his work mates who happen to put Matt's no sex for Lent on the net, Betting come in from everywhere, they put this on a Porn site.....and Erica works for a company where she has to look at Porn sites all day aaaggghhhhh!!!!brI really enjoyed this Comedy would reccomend this to anyone who loves a Romantic/Comedy.brThe Real question is does Matt give in or does me complete what he gave up for Lent.....Well you will have to buy this and find out for yourself! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars such a funny movie - despite josh hartnett   December 11, 2002

Don't get me wrong. I adore Josh Hartnett just like all the other red-blooded women around the world. And it's precisely because he is such a hottie that this film could have ended up in the movie cemetary. You totally focus on the stud and forget about the rest of it.. but this does not happen in 40 days and 40 nights. brThis is genuinely, laugh-out-loud, funny! Matt's (Josh Hartnett) friends and family are absolutely hilarious from the Bagel Boy to his room-mate to the 'interesting' conversation (around the dinner table no less) that Matt and his brother are subject to from his parents. brMy poor husband - who has an aversion to JH and all things JH like - was on the floor and clutching his sides in agony because he couldn't help himself!brThis is a lightweight movie that does not take itself too seriously and that is what everyone needs to remember. There are some very tender scenes that work very well because of the seriousness with which the two leads - JH and Shannon Sossaymon - play it. Watch for the 'orchid orgasm'. And it proves that he's not just a total stud-muffin. Josh Hartnett is actually quite a versatile actor.

5 out of 5 stars A good comedy film   June 11, 2003

This film doesn't aim to have a grand purpose, to illustrate the promiscuity or lack thereof of men or women. It is simply a funny film. Coupled with a brilliant soundtrack, Josh Hartnett and Shannyn Sossamon work brilliantly together to produce both a funny and serious-when-it-matters film. Well worth a look.

Fast-paced, great soundtrack, stocked full with good-looking people and some great one-liners. While the main characters were played with hilarious honesty I enjoyed the supporting cast more (Matt (Hartnett's) brother and roommate are hilarious).pThe DVD itself, however, was less exciting. Where some films are bringing out extended interviews, behind-the-scenes, previews etc I was very disappointed that 40 Days and 40 Nights had very little to offer by way of special features.pThe film comprises the 4 stars above. It's excellent.
