Amazon.co.uk Review
Director John Dahl has made more ingenious thrillers than IRoadkill/I, but few with quite its sense of terrible consequences arising from a minor prank. On a road trip, jailbird Fuller (Steve Zahn) persuades his younger, student brother Lewis (Paul Walker) to pretend to be a girl on a CB radio; they set a pushy trucker up with a date with an obnoxious guest at the motel where they stay for the night. The results are far from funny--the guest ends up dead and they find themselves being chased for a while by a large sinister truck. And then, when they have picked up Veena (Leelee Sobieski), the girl with whom Lewis is in love, it all gets worse, much worse. p Dahl has picked up on one of the most sinister aspects of hostage situations, which is that quite minor concessions in negotiation can often be more meaningful than they seem. If the film has a weakness it is that the irresponsibility of the two young men is eminently plausible and not especially sympathetic, and the trucker, rather like the faceless driver in Steven Spielberg's IDuel/I, is never more than a monstrous force of nature. Along the way, though, IRoadkill/I delivers an appropriate number of thrills and sudden reversals, which all makes for an exciting journey into terror. p BOn the DVD:/B IRoadkill/I on disc has commentaries by the director, by the writers and by stars Steve Zahn and Leelee Sobieski; it also has a fascinating wealth of alternate endings including one in which the whole third act of the movie goes in a radically different direction. It has a widescreen anamorphic visual ratio 2.35:1 and vibrant Dolby 5.1 sound that pumps up the tension in some crucial scenes. --IRoz Kaveney/I

5 out of 5 stars Roadkill runs on all cylinders from start to finish   December 5, 2003

Roadkill (released as Joy Ride in the US) has everything you could ever want in a thriller, delivering 96 power-packed, intense minutes of movie magic. The DVD makes this great movie even better by dumping as many extras as is scientifically possible onto the disk. Director John Dahl and his crew got everything right: cast, plot, special effects, overall vision, etc. This is no insignificant achievement given the fact that the storyline of the movie is a familiar one that could have fallen flat in a number of different ways. Under Dahl's direction, Roadkill delivers a uniquely impressive twist to a familiar movie formula.pThis is Fate at work here, thinks Lewis, when his friend Venna (LeeLee Sobieski) tells him she has broken up with her boyfriend, and he takes advantage of this opportunity by picking the girl of his dreams up in Colorado on his cross-country trip home from college. He also decides to backtrack 200 miles and bail his older brother out of jail. Fuller (Steve Zahn) left home five years earlier, seemingly just to try out for town drunk positions all over the Western US. Fuller has the bright idea of having an old CB radio installed in the car, and it is not long before he hatches up a prank to play on a certain trucker known as Rusty Nail. Lewis pretends to be a woman, gets the guy all worked up, and invites him to meet "her" that night in a hotel room occupied by a hateful fellow Fuller encountered in the hotel lobby. You know how this goes: it's funny until someone gets his lower jaw ripped out of his head. The boys head on east a little bit the wiser, but Rusty Nail refuses to go away, terrorizing them in a big way. The guys try to forget everything that happened by the time they pick up Venna, but Rusty Nail is still watching from the shadows and now sets his sights on the lovely young lady of the group. The suspense builds quite impressively over the course of the film, leading up to a climax that does not disappoint.pThe three main characters are just normal people, and that helps contribute to the fear factor involved in watching their insanely difficult ordeal. The voice of Rusty Nail works wonders, as his faceless presence over the CB is incredibly chilling and powerful. In the midst of all this terror, though, the viewer will find plenty of comedy. Steve Zahn is simply hilarious as Fuller; he takes gleeful delight in the prank he masterminds, yet he is at his funniest when he starts wigging out in terror, as he does on numerous occasions. Paul Walker has his moments as well, and he really serves to keep the story grounded, offsetting the hyperactive mania of Fuller and the serious and frightened attitude Venna has to adopt after learning that she is in grave danger as a result of a moronic prank. Sobieski is, of course, her always perfect self, demonstrating her acting skills across the entire spectrum from brave, determined young woman to helpless victim. The driving force behind Roadkill, though, is that big black semi that just keeps coming and coming. pThe movie is more than worth its price in and of itself, but the special edition DVD simply showers us with gifts. Let's say you don't care for the ending of the movie; well, in addition to one deleted scene, you get four alternate endings to choose from, including an original, unused ending totaling twenty-nine minutes. Amazingly, all of the endings work for me, although I agree with the director that the theatrical ending is the best of the bunch. You have the option of watching the extended original ending on its own or, more impressively, during your viewing of the movie itself. The other alternate endings involve quite different final scenes, giving everyone a chance to be a hero. The extras don't stop here, though. The DVD also comes with a theatrical trailer, a short featurette, three separate commentaries, and a trio of auditions for the voice of Rusty Nail. As impressed as I was with Ted Levine's voice in the film, I was still rather amazed at just how inferior the other two Rusty Nail wannabes sounded. Roadkill is the total thriller package and then some, and the DVD is by far the most impressive one-disk DVD release I have ever seen. Even if you come to Roadkill for no other reason than to bask in the glory of LeeLee Sobieski (which explains my original motivation for watching the film), you cannot help but leave impressed by a truly amazing thriller.

5 out of 5 stars A Modern day Duel   April 3, 2003

I first saw this film with my cousins in Canada but it was called "Joy Ride".brIt's about 2 brothers(Paul Walker Steve Zhan)who buy a cheap CV and play a prank on an unsuspected truck driver going by the name of "Rusty Nail".brAfter that he finds out that it was a prank chases them a girl(Leelee Sobieski)that Paul Walker's character was on his way to pick up but had to go get Steve Zhan out of jail all over the place.brYou don't get to see the driver until the end which makes it like a modern day "Duel"brIt's a great film with some "0n the edge of your seat moments" a lot of suspence so buy it now.

Comparisons with this film can made with Duel (1971) by Spielberg as both deal with an unseen truck driver terrorising an unsuspecting motorist, except int his case there are 3 occupants of the car and not 1. Watching this excellent film made me want to see Duel, so i did, and to be honest Roadkill is by far better. the plot: Basically, upon driving home, two brothers (later joined by one of the brothers love interest) play a prank on another truck driver with their CB radio and he doesnt take it well, and at every oppurtunity he delights in terrorising them. This was one of my fave films of 2001, the film has suspense, decent dialogue, good casting and the 29 minute alternative ending on the DVD is a real bonus. An excellent film

5 out of 5 stars Modern day Duel meets teen horror / comedy   December 29, 2002

I first saw this film at 7am on one of the many film channels whilst on holiday in the USA. By 7.30am there had been nudity, swearing and much tension. What a way to start the day!! pI have to say that this film is a modern day Duel, if not more enjoyable. The young cast gives a fresh feel and makes it different from all of the other 'teen horror movies'. The scene in the corn field has to be my favourite, and the fast-paced action of this film will keep you glued for the whole of this film. Excellent!!
