All time best October 10, 2003 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I love this film. The chemistry between the beautiful Sophia Loren and the dashing Cary Grant is entralling. The songs are sweet and the conversation between Cary and his son sticks with you. The relationships build gently and with humour and the pompous country club set are dealt a suitable blow by Sophia. This is a great film
An Excellent Romantic Comedy June 19, 2007 Rama Rao (Annandale, VA, USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Director Melville Shavelson is known for directing some successful romantic comedies involving families; two divorced adults and their offspring's. He takes credit for not only Houseboat, but also for "Yours, Mine and Ours," casting some successful stars of the day. This family drama casts Cary Grant as Tom Winters, a widower trying to raise three children alone away from his work at Washington D.C. to country side closer to relatives of his former wife. His young children love the younger sister of their mother but Tom is not too thrilled about dating her. Instead he meets a young Italian named Cinzia (Sophia Loren) who is a socialite trying to get away from her overprotective father. Initially there is no romance between the two, and in addition, his kids are less than thrilled when she is hired to work as nanny. Things get rocky but soon all ends well when they feel that they need each other. Parts of this movie were filmed on the Potomac River and Piscataway Creek at Fort Washington marina. This is an excellent family movie, which I recommend very highly.
HOUSEBOAT---A GREAT ROMANTIC COMEDY WITH THE BEAUTIFUL--SOPHIA LOREN September 12, 2009 Mr. W. J. Wright HOUSEBOAT,1957,colour,in cinemas 1958.Is a great romantic comedy that co-stars-CARY GRANT-as Tom Winston-SOPHIA LOREN-as Cinzia Zaccardi, and with a fine supporting cast that includes-MARTHA HYER-as Carolyn Gibson,as well as a group of three child actors who play Grant's children.Cinzia is hired by him to look after his children on his houseboat home-eventually they fall in love and marry.Sophia Loren also sings and dances great in this film.
br /This is the second film CARY GRANT quite literally got both his hands full of the bustiful SOPHIA LOREN-previously both had appeared in together[with legend FRANK SINATRA]in-THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION,1957.
br /Regards,Bill.
Great film to curl up on the sofa with coffee chocolate! November 18, 2009 A. Richards (England) I loved this film. It's a real rainy day, feel good film. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
great old style chick flick! March 5, 2004 F. Mclachlan (Scotland) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
spoilt rich girl who longs to lead a normal life, takes up a job as a nanny/housekeeper with a widowed, wealthy businessman who doesn't know her secret...brThis is the kind of film that Sleepless in Seattle and While You Were Sleeping try to be! Good as those films are, they still can't match this one. The chemistry between Cary Grant and Sophia Loren is amazing (according to Hollywood gossip it spilled over into real life too!), the comedy is timed to perfection and the lavish sets and wardrobe is impeccable as always in those days. If you love the old style romantic comedies, you won't be disappointed!
