Amazon.co.uk Review
"Belief gets us there", explains nun Linda Hunt to grieving widower Kevin Costner in IDragonfly/I. Costner plays an emergency room doctor whose ordered world is startled by "messages" from his dead wife. She's talking about the journey from life to death, but it describes the doctor's road from fact to faith equally well as he puzzles out the otherworldly events of his life. Costner's mourning comes off less lost and sad than simply emotionless and inert, but he finds good support from Kathy Bates as his sassy neighbour. Her appearances, along with a few startling horror-movie-type shocks, energise a film otherwise shrouded in loss, grief, and the hushed mood of supernatural spookiness. pIt's like a fusing of IGhost/I, IThe Sixth Sense/I, and IThe Mothman Prophecies/I, a New Age melodrama in a sentimental key that works through a rather contrived mystic mystery to a glowing climax. This is less a ghost story than a modern twist on the old-fashioned miracle. --ISean Axmaker/I

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!   April 1, 2003

This is the best supernatural film I've ever seen, an amazing heart-warming story that sends shivers down your spine throughout. Kevin Costner is excellent as the doctor who has just lost his wife in an accident, and the mystery deepens and deepens. A beautiful conclusion brings tears to your eyes, well it did to mine! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies of 2002   February 19, 2003

This is a gripping tale of a man who lost his pregnant wife in a tragic accident and how she communicated with him from beyond the grave. pAll actors/acresses in this movie provide moving performances to provide you with a story that's guaranteed to bring a tear to your watchfull eye. pGive the movie a few minutes to get started, and you'll be sure to forget the time you're spending watching it. The ending is amazing, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you. A must see for anyone who enjoys movies such as 'The Mothman Prophecies' and 'The Sixth Sense'.

5 out of 5 stars Slowing moving but genuinely spooky   February 13, 2005

Kevin Costnor finally in a movie that shows you that he can act, a reminder of the days when he did films like "Dances with Wolves" and "The Bodyguard".pDragonfly is like neither of the above, some people have compared it with "The Sixth Sense" and found it wanting, however that is a little unfair as this is not a movie about ghosts as such, rather it is about belief, life after death and the power of love.pWhen his wife is killed in a freak accident in South America, Dr. Joe Darrow is left only with memories for her body was not recovered from the wreckage of the bus that claimed her life and that of her fellow Red Cross workers.pBut Joe finds that he is getting signs, he is seeing things in the house he once shared with his wife not to mention the children who have had near death experiences talk about his wife Emily and a rainbow, along with an odd little wavery cross they keep drawing when they come back to the land of the living.pJoe thinks he is going mad, his friends think he is going mad but eventually Joe finds himself following what he soon realises are clues to a puzzle that he must unravel if he is ever to have peace of mind.pA visit to a remote village in South America reveals the truth about Emily's death and the surprising legacy she left behind.pAn excellent cast with Kath Bates in a tough but soft centred cookie role as Dr Darrow's friend Mrs Belmont and a short but sweet showing of the brilliant and often understated actress Linda Hunt as the nun Sister Madeline who makes Dr Darrow realise that there is more to life and death than heaven and earth can ever explain.pThere are no spectacular special effects in this film though there are some genuinely spooky moments which will make you jump and though the ending is a little bit syrupy for my taste it doesn't make the film any less watchable.pNot a film I would have gone to the movies to see but one I enjoyed watching on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Love - between life and death   October 21, 2007

This is a riveting movie staring Kevin Costner as an Emergency Room doctor who's wife, also a doctor, has died in a terrible accident overseas helping the poor. No spoiler there since her death occurs at the start of the movie. He is crushed by the death of his wife and goes through the motions of his life like a robot. Remembering that his wife asked him to check in on her pediatric cancer patients, he begins to visit them and grows to appreciate his wife's love and commitment even more than before. Then things begin to happen. The children he sees have seen her in near death experiences. He doesn't believe it. He doesn't believe in very much anymore and at first dismisses what these young children are trying to tell him. br / br /I won't say more as it would likely ruin the movie experience for you. I'll just say that the surprise ending took my breath away. This movie is an insightful, deeply moving story that will leave you thinking for days. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. I highly recommend that you not only see this movie, but buy it as you will want to watch it more than once. br /
