Amazon.co.uk Review IRomeo Is Bleeding/I is the flawed black comedy from director Peter Medak (IThe Krays/I) about a bad cop who slowly gets his due. Gary Oldman plays yet another quirky character, this time a New York detective on the take. His life goes haywire as he squares off with a Russian hit woman. Despite an intriguing cast and great dialogue, the movie becomes a bit too eccentric for its own good as several actors have nothing to do. The high point is Lena Olin, who finally has a role she can sink her teeth into: her zesty, monstrous assassin, Mona Demarkov, is one of the great movie villains. --IDoug Thomas/I

| Customer Reviews: Fantastic film, not for the fate of heart August 3, 2001 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
Saw this cleverly constructed bit of film grit once on the big screen and had to see it again soon after. For sheer gut affect, mad plot twists and insane character portrayals, this ranks up there (though perhaps not SO high) with Pulp Fiction except without the hype. pMadman Gary Oldman is at his best here as a policeman and husband who just doesn't know how to behave, and Lena Olin is in one of her favorite, and most provocative, roles (a cop-killing assassin). pBe forewarned, there is violence enough and a strong aura of sexuality (though no crude sex scenes). And the witty dialogue is now and again punctuated with a wee bit of colour. If Tarantino, Peckinpah, and Guy Richie are not your cup of tea, don't even try to take a sip of this stuff. It will not be to your tastes!pIt's a film that is rough tough and half in the buff that you don't have to be ashamed of watching with your brain functioning.
Probably one of the best motion-pictures I#180;ve EVER seen... January 27, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I can#180;t understand at all how people can compare this classic to a cheap TV-production. In my opinion, "Romeo is bleeding" can play on one level with "Pulp Fiction", "Jackie Brown", "Scarface" etc. In this film, we get a top leading actor (Oldman), a great counterpart (a real "femme fatale"), as well as a enthusiastic group of supporting actors (featuring Roy Scheider and other well known faces)and a great director who keeps the movie on a breathtaking pace. The conflict between the corrupt police-man and the female killer is amazingly well illustrated by Oldman and Olin and the end of the story is cruel and hard. That#180;s the way I like it. Honestly, the story maybe isn#180;t very original, but is that really important ?

Good piece of Gary Oldman tat August 12, 2004 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Now don't get me wrong, I'm a very big fan of Gary Oldman. This film isn't bad, but it's not good either. It's rather like an enjoyable channel five movie (for those who live in the UK) with Gary Oldman in it. Something to watch and drool over, but not actually take seriously because it has the cheesiest voice over after Bladerunner. And poor old Gary's accent sounds like he's had one Marlboro's too many. All in all, for serious Gary fan's only.
