Amazon.co.uk Review
A rash of daring bank robberies erupt in which the bad guys all wear the masks of worse guys--former presidents (nice touch). Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), an impossibly named former football star who blew out his knee and became a studly crime-busting fed instead, figures out that none of the heists occur during surfing season and all of them occur when, so to speak, surf's down. So obviously, he reasons, we're dealing with some surfer-dude bank robbers. He goes undercover with just such a group, led by a very spiritual, very guru-type guy played by Patrick Swayze, who has some muddled philosophies when it comes to materialism. If you can buy all that, this efficiently directed (by Kathryn Bigelow) action flick has some diverting moments (credit it, for example, for anticipating the extreme-sports fad). But Reeves' intelligent-sounding lines don't make him seem remotely intelligent and that plot makes him look positively brilliant. I--David Kronke/I

5 out of 5 stars Homo Erotica   August 20, 2006
Brendan O. Clarke (Edinburgh)

Point Break is one of the quintessential rewatchable movies of the past 20 years. It's a safe bet that Point Break would be in my fav movie list. Released just before the mid-90's surge of super-advanced special effects that yielded such super-terrible movies as Twister, Independence Day, and pretty much anything involving the "Jerry Bruckheimer" production stamp, Point Break is nothing short of B-movie heaven, with all the familiar trappings thereof: rampant overacting, testosterone-laden dialogue, a series of highly implausible occurrences, and men determined to resolve everything with violence. It's fast-paced, deliriously stupid, and just suspenseful enough to keep your eyes glued to the screen. br / br /At the same time, Point Break succeeds because its heart is always in the right place. Sure, it doesn't have the huge budget and nifty effects that characterized so many of the Hollywood blockbuster released in the past decade or so, but Point Break did manage to boast a plot and characters that were at least somewhat believable and well-developed, to go with lots of skillful direction from Kathryn Bigelow. And, of course, you get one completely iconic line from Keanu Reeves : "I am an EFF-BEE-EYE Agent!". His career was all downhill from that one, let me tell you. br / br /Even the name of the hero is likably improbable: Johnny Utah (!)ha Jesus, played in slightly-less-wooden-than-usual fashion by Keanu Reeves in his pre-Speed days.. br /Check out the sexual chemistry between Bodhi and Johnny Utah. "Utah, you want me so bad its like acid in your mouth." Both men fight each other, wrestle in wet suits and sky dive together. br / br /-Shootouts, fistfights, chases, a gratuitous car explosion, surfing, and skydiving: everything you could want in an action movie, and more! br / br /-An ideal sunday afternoon would be to have a copy of the 'Big Wednesday' and 'Point Break', and 2 bottles of red wine. Tremendous. br /

5 out of 5 stars a hard rockin' surfin' ripper of a film!   February 28, 2003

Point Break is a fast paced, stylish and original thriller which contains car chases, bank robberies and great surfing and sky diving scenes to take your breath away. Patrick swayze and keanu reeves both bust out great character performances as Bodhi and Johnny Utah and there are some really choice lines from the two lead boys as the film really gets cooking. Special mention needs to go to Swayze's majestic extreme sports mullet haircut which really kicks ass!(nice one Pat!) What can you say? this film has a very original and fresh plot and is full of great action (for fans of surfing and skydiving or otherwise) Watch out for a cameo appearance from Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis as a dodgy surfing badass. This is a great film with a really poignant ending. Great performances from John C.McGinlay and Gary Busey aswell and a quality rockin' soundtrack. WHAT A BEAUT! BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Cult-status action movie for radical sports enthusiasts.   April 19, 2002

Essential viewing for anyone cool enough to identify with radical sports and the laid back lifestyle of the surf-bum. Straightforward bank-robbery plot with satirical twist is finely developed and well acted, with stunning scenery and unpredictable, breathtaking action. Final scene is a slight anticlimax, but this is a film that can be watched again and again. If you want to know more, watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.   March 19, 2003

This film is amazing, right from the very start when you the opening title music you know its going to be something special. I have watched this film more times than I care to remember, it truely is superb. It may have some 'well-used' plots but all of this is woven into a masterpeice of a film thats worth going in anyones collection, especially if your under 25, and into an alternative life style, you know who you are you adrenalin junkies!

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, edge of seat thrills from beginning to end!   June 15, 2005

This really is one of the best films out there, with no exaggeration!pNot just aimed at Surfy Dudes(!) the film manages to keep the excitement set at a maximum pace without compromising the level of characterisation. Too often adrenaline filled movies offer a lazily written plotline, are full of cliches and two dimensional characters which tends to make a lot of viewers feel that the film is somehow incomplete. Point Break stands out from many others as it manages to successfully combine thrilling action sequences which are balanced out with in-depth thought and feeling behind the drama. Both Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze are well chosen for their roles and their characters are portrayed with passion and conviction.pThe atmosphere is electric, particularly throughout the Sky Diving, Bank Robbery and Surfing scenes. Point Break is a film which would appeal to women as much as men particlularly as it includes an intelligently portrayed love interest storyline, which the viewer can see has not just been thrown in to appeal to the masses, because it makes an important contribution to the main plot. pPoint Break is neither excessively violent nor does it limit its appeal to one group of viewers. Sharp direction from Bigelow ensures that the flowing narrative consistantly maintains the breathless pace without any lapses in quality. This really is one film that all movie enthusiasts must have in their collection!
