Amazon.co.uk Review
Let's see--he has been Han Solo in three films and Indiana Jones in three more. So why shouldn't Harrison Ford take on a new continuing character in Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan? In this film, directed by Phillip Noyce, Ford picked up the baton when Alec Baldwin, who played Ryan in iThe Hunt for Red October/i, opted for a Broadway role instead. In this film, Ryan and his family are on vacation when Ryan saves a member of the British royal family from attack by Irish terrorists. The next thing he knows, the Ryan clan has been targeted by the same terrorists, who invade his Maryland home. The film can't shed all of Clancy's lumbering prose, or his techno-dweeb fascination with spy satellites and the like. But no one is better than Ford at righteous heroism--and Sean Bean makes a suitably snakey villain. I--Marshall Fine/I

5 out of 5 stars Harrison Ford V Sean Bean, what an event   September 10, 2000

This film is based on the novel by Tom Clancy of the same name. It is truly an outstanding film, full of intense action and edge of seat thrill. The price of heroism come dearly to jack ryan, almost costing him the lives of his family, but i wont tell you anymore about the film, that would spoil it. Needless to say the film is brilliently made and keeps to the general plot of the novel which is good. pBuy it just to see it.pGo on you know you want to.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best thrillers of all time   February 5, 2008

This adaptation ot Clancy's novel of the same name is outstanding- Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan is once again excellent in this thriller. br / br /The story centres on Ryan, who having left the CIA behind years previously to focus on his family, gives a lecture in London during a holiday with his wife and daughter. In a chance encounter in Mayfair, Ryan defends an attack on a member of the Royal Family by a brutally ruthless IRA-ofshoot faction, killing one of two brothers involved, and thus incurring the wrath of the elder brother, Sean Miller (Sean Bean), the leader of the attack, who will stop at nothing to get revenge. Having recuperated and testified against Miller, Ryan returns home with his family, only to find that Miller has escaped from prison and is coming after him. This turn of envents puts an initially reluctant Ryan back in the CIA, as he endeavours to protect the lives of himself and his family. Tense and gripping scenarios ensue, including a lights-out, nail-biting finale at Ryan's remote home, and some excellent action sequences. br / br /The acting is great- Sean Bean's Ulster accent is spot-on and the supporting cast, including Polly Maberly, is very good too. The script is intelligent and entertaining, and the soundtrack is pretty good too. Of all the Clancy films, this is my favourite.

5 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT FILM   August 16, 2007

love this film! No doubt about it! I usually watch this film once every 3-4 weeks, and I never get sick of it! There are not many other films that are so addictive you can watch it over and over again and not get sick of it, so this is a rarity coming from the beginning of the 90s. (other addictive films include 'Romancing the Stone', 'Die Hard' and 'A Fish Called Wanda') The cast for the film is superb! Ford is great as Ryan, who is relieving Alec Baldwin after 'Hunt For Red October'. Also, the main villain Sean Bean is terrific! Bean is one of the best actors on the face of this planet, but I still find it weird that girls drool over him, and say he's sexy! Creepy! Bean has done many different accents so believably in films, for example in this film he's pure Irish, but in 'Goldeneye' he was British, and sounded completely different! Bean always makes a good villain, but it's not compulsory to kill him in every film he's in! (the only films I've seen when he stays alive is 'Troy' and 'Flightplan'. In both those films he was an ally. Thank god!) Other members of the supporting cast, like Richard Harris, James Earl Jones and Samuel L. Jackson add to the addictiveness of this film, and they're all astoundingly great actors (God rest Harris, he will be missed!). br / br /The basic plot follows Ford as an Ex-CIA agent named Jack Ryan, who goes to London to make a speech, but when he meets up with his family after his speech he foils an attempt to assassinate the royal family, carried out by nefarious Irish terrorists! During the foiling of the attack the head terrorist Sean Miller (Bean) is captured, but his little brother is killed by Ryan. Miller swears revenge on Ryan. Miller is sent to prison for the assassination attempt, but his fellow terrorist buddies rescue him, so Miller has one more shot at assassinating the royal family, and to get revenge on Ryan! After Miller continually tries to get revenge on Ryan, his family still stands, but now Ryan is besotted with finding Miller, and stopping the Irish terrorist! Hence and action packed ending, that has some great action, and some great acting! This film is a must-see, is makes a great night at the movies, and is one of the highest recommended Ford films I've ever watched.

5 out of 5 stars A cool Irish thriller   November 7, 2003

Was my favourite film for quite a while, but I still love this.brThe film is just great and the DVD is alright too, there are very few special features but the ones that we have are alright, we have the film in widescreen and Dolby digital surround sound and we have some good subtitles and Languages and finally we have a boss trailer.brAll of that stuff is great but none of it will match the film, you really have to own the DVD now.

5 out of 5 stars Jack Ryan fits Harrison Ford like a second skin!   October 21, 2008
D. Garland
Who better to play down-to-earth hero Jack Ryan than the-guy-next-door? Harrison Ford does Tom Clancy's character complete justice. With his crooked smile, and as ever fantastic acting, Patriot Games is a sheer pleasure to watch. br / br /More often than not, movies do not do justice to the books. This however is not the case here. Of course a movie cannot possibly include all the little details that a book can, but even those who never read Clancy's books would enjoy this movie. Good dose of action and drama...couple of hours perfect entertainment!
